Log for second machine(Uni student!)

I got in a bit of a mess with my other posts, so nonsuch advised me to post a fresh log with a new title. Here is the log of a Uni student, I have scanned it over and over with all the recommended scanners, and would just like it checked before I hand it back!If anyone can look at it I would be grateful as always

Hi, rainbow bridge. I can see very little in the log that needs attention. I will have you start the computer in Safe Mode a little later, which will prevent you from having access to the Internet, so you may want to either print these instructions or save them to a text file for easy reference.

LimeWire is installed. The older versions of LimeWire were bundled with other adware and spyware, so unless you know that this user is running the most current version I recommend that you remove it through Add/Remove Programs in Windows Control Panel. If P2P networking is important to the user, he or she can install the most current version of LimeWire or any other "safe" P2P software after the computer is clean.

We need to make sure you can see all files, including hidden and system files. Please click Start => My Computer. On the menu bar select Tools => Folder Options, and then select the View tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, please make sure Show hidden files and folders is checked and Hide protected operating system files (recommended) is unchecked. Click Yes to confirm, and then click OK.

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to this item to have it fixed.

Please close all open windows and browsers, including this one, and click Fix Checked.

Now, restart your computer into Safe Mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

I need to have you search for a file that needs to be deleted. Please click Start => Search => All files and folders and type mssmmspgr.exe in the All or part of the file name box. Make sure that Look in is set to search C: and then click Search. If the file is found, it will appear in the right-hand panel. Please delete every instance of the file found.

If you removed LimeWire, please use Windows Explorer and delete the following folder shown below in red if it's still present.

Restart the computer normally.

Run HijackThis and post a new HijackThis log for me to review.

Rainbow bridge, I looked through your previous posts and noticed that there was a CWS infection on this machine. I don’t see signs of it now, so I’m assuming that one of the scans you ran was CWShredder. Am I correct? What other scans have you done?

If LimeWire is current, and the user wants to keep it, then we won’t worry about it.

I’m sorry, but I should have had you fix these too. Let’s tidy up just a bit more with HijackThis. Check the box next to each of these items to have them fixed.

Yes I ran CWS,Spybot, Adaware,A2,and several on line scanners (kaspersky, panda, ewido) so I hope that got rid of a lot of stuff!

Let’s clean out the temporary folders. Please click Start => Run and type cleanmgr in the command box. Select C: and click OK to scan the system. When the scan has completed, please make sure that Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, and Temporary Files are the only items selected. Click OK, and then click Yes to confirm. If you have more than one user account on the computer, you will need to run cleanmgr from each account to delete all the temporary files.

Let’s also clean out the Prefetch folder. Using Windows Explorer, please navigate to C:\Windows\Prefetch\ and delete everything in the folder. Please delete only the contents of the folder, NOT the Prefetch folder itself.

We need to hide the system files again. Please click Start => My Computer. On the menu bar select Tools => Folder Options, and then select the View tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, please make sure Show hidden files and folders is unchecked and Hide protected operating system files (recommended) is checked. Click Yes to confirm, and then click OK.

Now, let’s make sure we have a clean restore point because we don’t want any bad files hiding that could re-infect the system if it ever has to be restored. Note: This will erase any and all restore points previously made. Please click Start, right-clickMy Computer, and then click Properties. On the System Restore tab, check the box Turn off System Restore on all drives, click Apply, and then finally click OK. Restart the computer. Now, repeat the process and uncheck the Turn off System Restore on all drives box. This will create a fresh restore point.

Viruses, Adware, and Spyware are running rampant, but taking a few simple precautions can prevent many of them. Below I have included a number of recommendations for additional protection to help prevent future malware infections. These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

The second Service Pack for Windows XP is already installed. That's great. I highly recommend regular visits to the Windows Update site and installation of all High Priority updates as soon as possible. I cannot stress enough how important this is. For instructions, on enabling automatic updates, visit the Microsoft website.

1) In order to protect against spyware, consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE Already installed

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

2) Please consider using another web browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. Firefox may be downloaded from here: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/


3) If you do occasionally use Internet Explorer, add another level of protection to the browser by blocking certain sites that are known to contain malware. IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. ID-SPYAD may be found here.

4) AVG anti-virus is installed. Excellent! For your own protection, please be sure to run it regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, if not already, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls for personal use are ZoneAlarm, Kerio, and Sygate. A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

I have installed the other progs you suggested, and will pass on the instructions to keep it all clean, but I have to say, judging on past experience (of my childrens friends at uni, ) they wont!
