Hijacked Browser?

Unread postby Dlweis » August 24th, 2009, 9:14 pm

I have current Norton and Spybot. My browser sometimes takes me to other links. If I type the address in the URL it takes me there but if I click a link it takes me to various shopping sites and or wrong links. Below is my Log. Thank you in advance for any help that you may provide.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi Dlweis and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Vista Advice:

All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.

The Operating System(Vista aka Windows 6) in use comes with a inbuilt utility called User Access Control(UAC) when prompted by this with anything I ask you to do carry out please select the option Allow.

Scan with Rooter:

Please download Rooter.exe to your desktop.

  • Right click on Rooter.exe and select Run as Administrator to start the application.
  • Now click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is completed a text file called Rooter.txt will appear on your desktop, post the contents in your next reply.
  • Now click on Close button to exit Rooter.

Note: The logfile can also be located within this folder Rooter$ at the root of your installed Hard-Drive. EG: C:\Rooter$

Scan with RSIT:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Right click on RSIT.exe and select Run as Administrator to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Rooter Log.
  • Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

Thanks for your help Dakeyras. I downloaded Rooter.exe to my desktop. I right clicked to Run as administrator to start the app. When I click on the Scan button it starts to work but then a window from Microsoft Windows comes up and says: "Malware Finder has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I did not want to skip this step so I am replying to you.

Thanks

Re: Hijacked Browser?

Unread postby Dakeyras » August 29th, 2009, 11:18 pm

Hi :)

Thanks so much for your help!

Dennis
You're welcome!

I have noticed some entry's have been removed with HijackThis, not a prudent move if done by yourself and or if advised to do so. Those removed are actually legitimate but these can be reset rather than restored in due course.

OK do not make any other changes to the computer what so ever please unless I ask, thank you.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Right-click mbam-setup.exe and select Run as Administrator. then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(if not inform myself straight away please)

  • Right-click once on RSIT.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • RSIT will start running, at the disclaimer click on Continue.
  • When done, 1 log will be produced.
  • Post that in your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
  • A new RSIT Log

I apologize for some of the changes that I did in desperation before attempting to contact outside help.

I downloaded the TFC.EXE file to my desktop and when I executed it I got the same Microsoft error message as before.

Thanks

OK, you may have a possible Hard-Drive problem here and plus a possible malware related one.

Try the below first then check if you run my prior instructions please.

Vista LKGC:

Start-up you computer and during the POST(Power On Self Test) sequence continually depress Function Key 8(F8) to bring up the Advanced Boot Options screen.

Use the arrow keys to scroll down and select Last Know Good Configuration (advanced) and hit the Enter/Return key.

Followed your instructions during the P.O.S.T. Selected LKGC and after booting tried to run TFC as administrator. Got the same error message from Microsoft Windows. I have not had any hard-drive problems that I know of. All my programs seem to be working correctly. Thanks again for all your efforts in helping me!

Hi :)

Thanks for the update. OK lets have a further investigation shall we, as something must be causing this error that relates to a important security feature of Vista. As a precaution I will advise one proactive measure. This will not effect the operating system in a negative manner I will add.

Before we start:

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Reset Host File:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad: <-- Start >> Run... type in notepad and select OK
Code: Select all
@Echo off
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
del %0
  • Go to File >> Save As
  • Save File name as "Dakeyras.bat" <-- Make sure to include the quotes.
  • Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
  • It should look similar to this: Image

Now right click on the desktop Dakeyras.bat and select Run as Administrator to run the batch file. It will self-delete when completed.

F-Secure Blacklight:

Please download Blacklight from here

or

Link to it from the ftp site: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe

Save it to C:\ with a name of fsbl.exe

  • Open an Elevated Command Prompt
    • Open the Start Menu.
    • In the white line (Start Search) area, type cmd
    • Press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.
    • Click on Continue in the UAC prompt
    • Type the following line onto the command prompt
      C:\fsbl.exe /expert
  • Hit Enter
  • This will launch BlackLight
  • Select I accept the agreement
  • Click Next
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Click on Next>
  • Click Exit
  • A logfile will have been created in the C:\ drive
  • It will be named fsbl-xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log where xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is the date and time of the scan
  • Use notepad to open that log.
  • Post the contents of that log as a reply to this topic.

Next:

Please download OTL and save it to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on OTL.exe and select Run as Administrator to start the application.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
  • Please post the contents of these 2 Notepad files in your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Blacklight Log.
  • Both OTL logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

Re: Hijacked Browser?

Hi :)

Vista-System File Checker:

  • Click on Start(Vista Orb).
  • Click on All Programs and Accessories.
  • Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator.
  • Click on Continue in the UAC prompt.
  • At the Command Prompt C:\Windows\System32> type in the following exactly:
  • sfc /scannow
  • Then depress the Enter/Return key.

Note: This may take awhile to finish. When completed close the Administrator Command Prompt window.

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please go here and download ERUNT.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Right click on erunt-setup.exe and select Run as Administrator to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.

Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

OTL Custom Script:

  • Right-click on OTL and select Run as Administrator to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following:
Code: Select all
:Reg

Performed Vista File Checker everything ok.

When I went to run the ERUNT Program I received the following error message:

ERU for Windows NT
Unable to create file:
C:\Windows\ERDNT\9-1-2009ERDNT.INF

If I clicked ok to continue a second error came up

Error Saving File
C:\Windows\ERDNT\9-1-2009\security
[RegCreateKeyEx:5-Access is denied]

I stopped at this point because there was nothing in the files saved.

Thanks,

Dennis

Hi :)

OK what you posted indicates to myself that the Registry on your computer is corrupted/damaged. It is entirely feasible that the Vista RegBack folder is compromised also and we may be unable to make use of the 6 files in the aforementioned folder but no harm trying.

We will need the Windows Vista DVD that came with your computer to so as follows.

Repair Vista Registry:

  • Bootup your computer from the Vista DVD.
  • If not sure how to, a very good tutorial can be read here
  • You will have to answer a few basic questions then select the option Repair your computer
  • At the the System Recovery Options screen click Windows Vista to highlight then Next>
  • Now click on/select Command Prompt
  • At the Command Prompt type in the following exactly:-

    CD C:\Windows\System32\Config

  • and hit the Enter key, now type in:-

    REN system system.old

  • and hit the Enter key, now type in:-

    COPY C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\System

  • Now remove your Windows Vista DVD from the CD Drive, now type in:-

    Exit

  • Hit the Enter key, back at the the System Recovery Options screen click Restart and your computer should boot-up as normal.

Let myself know the outcome and or if any problems encountered, thank you.
