Is it time to reformat and reinstall XP?

Unread postby RonnieV » July 22nd, 2009, 2:56 pm

Good day and thanks in advance for your assistance.

I've been helping a friend with badly infected Compaq SR1030NX. Since the PC had been running with a badly out of date antivirus, I ran online scans by BitDefender and ESET and allowed them to disinfect several hundred files and in a few cases, delete files. The primarily culprit is Win32:Sality. Many of the infected files were isolated on the D: partition where the restore image is stored. After allowing the online scanners to do what they could, I remove Norton using their removal tool, and installed the newest version of Antivir, Threatfire and Malwarebytes. Antivir quarantined dozens of additional files. After additional scans with Antivir and Malwarebytes, they found nothing.

Just as I thought I had reached the end of tunnel, Antivir's Guard that runs in the background started finding infected files again. I probably need to add that I did set Antivir's heuristic setting at a "high detection level." I've since run Antivir and Malwarebytes and am finding nothing.

A friend reminded me of ComboFix, a program I had downloaded from the Bleeping Computer but never used. While I am aware of its potential for creating serious problems, I felt I had little to lose by running it since I was planning to reformat the HD anyway.

ComboFix did quarantined a few additional files. After deciding to post the ComboFix logs I visited your site and saw your desire that I run HiJackThis which I have.

I've included the log from ComboFix as well as a small list of files that ComboFix quarantined. I've also included the log from HiJackThis. I'd appreciate advice as to what my next step should be.

Thanks again for all the the good work you do.
