Computer is getting slower and slower. Sits for up to 40 seconds waiting to open - even items on the desktop. I understand I should download HJT and wait for further instructions? Thanks so much for your help!

Hello and Welcome to forums!

My name is Bio-Hazard and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues this may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • I f you don't know or understand something please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!!

STEP 1

Download DDS

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from:

Link1
Link2
Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

  • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
  • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

STEP 2

RootRepeal - Rootkit Detector

Download RootRepeal.zip and unzip it to your Desktop.

  • Double click RootRepeal.exe to start the program
  • Click on the Report tab at the bottom of the program window
  • Clickthe Scan button
  • In the Select Scan dialog, check:
    • Drivers
    • Files
    • Processes
    • SSDT
    • Stealth Objects
    • Hidden Services
  • Click the OK button
  • In the next dialog, select all drives showing
  • Click OK to start the scan

The scan can take some time. DO NOT run any other programs while the scan is running
  • When the scan is complete, the Save Report button will become available
  • Click this and save the report to your Desktop as RootRepeal.txt
  • Go to File, then Exit to close the program

Thank you so much - BioHazard - for your response thus far. Have had some impossible problems this morning. I successfully with the DDS/Attach logs and will forward them - but when I downloaded the RootRepeal to desktop - everything repeatedly froze - when I tried to open - got message not enough virt memory but message froze on screen - Also mssg "Insufficient syst resources exist to complete request service" - All the while the "please wait - initializing" box frozen on desktop. Task Manager would not respond to cursor to open - When trying to shut down - box froze. Also pieces of windows would freeze on the desktop and refuse to close. Nothing would respond -Tried to reboot and msg window appeared that "End Program-Busy" Did emergency shut down and booted up again. Same happened. Am now typing this in SAFEMODE Networking.
Went to add/remove programs to see if RootRepeal was there so I could delete it - did not show up. Moved desktop icon to trash but concerned this was just a shortcut and the program still lurks. Will send this message with the DDS and Attach logs - if it does not send - will recontact you on my laptop for another idea.

PS - one of these logs references Norton AV along with ESET. I thought I ONLY had ESET! couple of years ago did everything possible to eradicate it and now it shows up again?

Hello!

Sorry that you had problems Rootrepeal. I do have few questions before we continue.

Are you able to boot to normal mode?
Did the computer froze when you were opening the zip file or when you were running the exe file?

Rootrepeal doesnt install anything, it is a standalone program.

Good Morning (for you!)

When I first read your reply just now - I had still been working in Safe Mode Networking - loving the rapid speed everything seemed to go. clicks opened windows immediately - pages opened - absolutely wonderful -
So I read your note - and shut down and rebooted in Normal mode.
It took several minutes once the windows screen was up.
clicked on IE and the hourglass appeared - screen waited - and finally at close to 2 minutes hourglass disappeared and it was obvious internet was not coming up.
clicked on outlook express - 15 sec to appear -
clicked on send/receive to get new mail and it took over a minute and suddenly, in the meantime, IE opens.
clicking on your note - clicking on link to forum - took again - over a minute

Task manager was topped off green - with the items taking the most cpu's (if this says anything to you) system idle process/svchost.exe and back and forth 'tween two open IE's - Now at present - running 4% cpu.

when clicking on your link to Root...before - window wanted to download it into program files - and I changed that to desktop - as that is what I understood. After it downloaded and icon appeared on desktop - (I'd turned off ESET av to avoid conflict) - I clicked to open. Asked me if I wanted to run - said yes - and then the window appeared "initializing...please wait" and
that is where everything bogged up.

Should I try this install of root...again? Letting it install where it prefers - Knowing I can escape and at least get to Safe Mode with networking to communicate and be online.

Thanks much!

Hello!

Try to avoid using safe Mode with Networking as you can get infected using it. Lets forget rootrepeal for now.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Save it to your desktop
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest

Kaspersky Online Scan

You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.

Sorry it took so long to get back. Had to run 2 Kaspersky scans. First one took 7 hours - after updating, indicated it had completed and was 100% done - it just sat there - frozen - would not move down to SCAN selection for maybe 10 minutes - then began.
and then froze on screen, not letting me open report. Redid this morning, 4 hours - Report attached, along with mbam-log, and HJT log.

Computer still takes up to several minutes to open certain things or move between items that are not even online. Like, from fresh start - clicked on IE and it took 18 seconds to open - and then the window just sat there for several seconds more. Online commands sometimes just sit there and later suddenly open. Status bar says that I'm connected to the site - but it's "waiting"

Also got Windows msg virtual memory minimum too low
nothing was open. this was in preparation for virus scan last night.

At this very moment - computer was lightening fast going to start/programs/Hijack This/opening/ and completing log. Like really rapid -

Clicked on IE icon - 13 sec to open to blank white screen, another 14 sec to begin opening to homepage which is My Earthlink, homepage began opening in pieces and took another 7 seconds to be fully visible - then another 3 for hourglass to disappear where I could click on a link if I wanted. Links opening fast enough at the moment. maybe only a couple of seconds. No problem with that. But it's sporadic.

BTW -

Because I had both firefox and IE - and firefox had just been recently installed - I thought perhaps that was causing conflicts. I did an un-install of firefox yesterday before doing the above, and the browser then seemed somewhat better. I'd only used IE so everything bookmarked or saved was for IE and when firefox had installed - it appointed itself "King" of browsers - by default. I kept trying to change it back but there was still an argument!

I would like to have both - as I prefer firefox/mozilla but if it is going to mess up - I'd like to remove all remnants of firefox if possible.

Also - I want NO Norton if possible. It keeps coming up in bits and pieces and I thought it to be long gone.

Ok, lets see what we can find.

I have run Firefox and IE side by side for over 2 years now and i never had problems. I also prefer Firefox myself. There is already IE7 and IE8 out, so you could try to upgrade your IE to one of those and then reinstall Firefox and see how things go.

I have done some research on to the error message you are receiving. Here are few articlec that you might find usefull:

Virtual Memory in Windows XP

You keep getting a "your system is running low on virtual memory" message

Read them through and if you are comfortable then you can change your pagefile and see if it makes any difference.

Next we are going to do some summer cleaning. please read the next article.

What a mess today is...and thank you for still being here! I will read through this post in a second but first need to explain what has happened. Right now I'm finally on my laptop after spending nearly two days trying to get my desktop to access the internet. This may be more than you and I can handle and I've been trying to resolve the problems before taking it in to someone that will charge a fortune to clean it up/out etc.

To try and summarize - while waiting for further instructions from you - spent time emailing and working with my camera program. I use Earthlink pop mail server - where I'm typing now - but, usually access my mail and send/receive through Outlook Express. Early yesterday Outlook quit receiving mail or sending it. Computer got slower and slower. Then - web pages would not open - kept getting error messages - page would not display - connection to internet not available.

Moved into apt one month ago where the only avble option was a DSL line/modem. I also have it running through a wireless router so I can use laptop elsewhere in apt. I've had two techs out to troubleshoot connection problems prior to finding you...after they said everything on their end was good and must be with my PC.

So after doing NOTHING to cause this shutdown - I contacted their support and spent a good hour twice and they were stumped. Because I then could not get online - they could not do remote assist -

All night I worked on my own. Have learned a lot - just like you apparently have researched - and have gone very, very slowly if I made any change at all. I would like to avoid taking it in for a very costly clean up if it's a logical fix.

I do not have any viruses.
The DSL modem is operating.
The routher is operating.

I ran a Microsoft diagnostic that said three separate times my Ethernet Realtek driver was not working. I tried to do a repair - but it froze towards the end then said it could not be done due to ARP CACHE not able to to empty? The tech on the phone and I did a command prompt to do it that way and it was not responsive. I can find nothing in the Windows Help stuff about it - and until now - had not been online to search any further.

I looked at the Event Log - and it seems there are dozens of instances in the past week or so about the DNS problems and DHCP? problems. And - diagnostics say settings are wrong on IE.
But - they are configured correctly -

So right now - I'm not sure how to proceed. I removed the router. DC'd all connections from modem - power down? And then when I finally connected it to this laptop - it took a while but then let me online.

QUESTION? I'm going to try and download or copy anything you've sent me and then transfer it to the dead PC. IF.... I have to do a complete reinstall from my recovery disks - what am I going to lose? Documents, my writing files, my nursing files, my photos? Everything? How do I save my emails? I'm not going to do this until I have to.

================================================

This laptop is lightening fast - like the PC should be doing - so I know there are real issues with it. I so very much appreciate your help thus far - and if you have reached your limit with me I would truly understand. I just wanted you to know why I didn't send a faster response - and if you can continue to help - I didn't want to lose the connection if it ran up to the three days.

Any suggestions on how to proceed for me would be so appreciated. In the meantime, I will now read and study your post and suggestions - maybe something will jump off the page and make sense, solving the problems.

Oh - I did do some system restore's - Back to where I had Mozilla installed - and yes, I do like it better than IE so I don't think it would be a problem if everything else works.

Also - is there someplace I can't locate that has a backup registry? It seems and was suggested that somehow my registry is corrupted.

Thanks much - Pamela (Preston)

I'll go back to the PC and copy to disk the recent logs and files I've done and perhaps that will be a clue. Could I make this work using the back and forth disk downloads?

Re article on "Slow Computer" and suggestions: Over the weekend, I read the same and did:
clean out temp AND offline content? Was this second step a problem??
defrag not necessary
disabled DNS and Indexing (Could the DNS be a problem since I'm getting some type of error re DNS?
Start menu trimmed
Removed old Java file after it upgraded
Did NOT delete old restore points - will do if you think it safe and necessary

Your other articles were very good - have done a search for clearing the ARP cache - understand it somewhat now and will work on that this evening. I have no other life.

Thanks Bio-Hazard!

Hello Pamela!

Well you had some rough times with your computer. It seems that your PC in bit of a state. You have asked about reinstalling windows. Looking at the situation you are in it would be very wise thing to do. My expertise is malware removal so i could give you links to a PC troubleshooting forums, if you are interested, maybe they would be able to help you. I will go through your RSIT log and let you know what i found out. I can also give you links to read about reinstalling windows if you are interested.

IF.... I have to do a complete reinstall from my recovery disks - what am I going to lose? Documents, my writing files, my nursing files, my photos? Everything? How do I save my emails? I'm not going to do this until I have to.

Your Nursing files, emails, Documents, pictures and music can be saved on to a CD or external usb drive. Dont do anything until we have figured out what you want to do.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

I think I'm thinking along your lines of the re-install. Funny how a computer becomes your lifeline and when it doesn't work - it's like an all consuming illness. Loss of sleep, stress, headache!!
As I type on this laptop and see how streamlined, quick and clean it is - and as I switch to the big screen and other keyboard, mouse beside me - I see the huge difference.

I will work today on copying the things I need. A wake-up call to get that external harddrive I kept putting off.

Send the links you have - and I'll work on my own as well but wait til I hear back.

Guess this is ONE way to get rid of malware, yes?!

And come to find out - that wasn't the issue really at all.

That is so true.

I have all my important files backed up on external harddrive. It is a excellent way to keep back ups.

Yes it is. As you are experiencing so many problems reinstalling windows is a good option.

Here is my speech when user decide to reformat and reinstall windows.

Clean Install

I'll respect you decision to do a clean install.

Please make sure that you know what to do before beginning the operation.

Here are a few links that probably help:

When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?
Windows XP Clean install

Where to backup your files
How to backup your files in Windows XP
Restoring your backups

Then there are a couple of things you should do immediately after installing Windows and before surfing the net.

    General Security and Computer Health
Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection. You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented.

  • Set correct settings for files
    • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
    • Under Hidden files and folders if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
    • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
    • If necessary check Display content of system folders
    • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
    • Click OK

  • Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
NOTE: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.

    Here are few FREE alternatives:

  • Install and use a firewall with outbound protection
The Windows firewall only monitors incoming traffic, NOT outgoing. Using a software firewall in its default configuration to replace the Windows firewall greatly reduces the risk of your computer being hacked. Make sure your firewall is always enabled while your computer is connected to the internet.
NOTE: You should only have one firewall installed at a time. Having more than one firewall installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as seriously impairing the performance of your PC.

    Here are few FREE alternatives:

  • Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.
NOTE: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use internet explorer for it and allow the ActiveX control to install.
  • Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month.
  • Make Internet Explorer More Secure
You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this SITE

Recommended Programs

I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (if not already present), and the updating of them on a regular basis.

  • WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. For more information, please visit HERE.
  • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious ActiveX controls from installing on your computer. If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see HERE. You can download SpywareBlaster from HERE.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is an anti-malware application that can thoroughly remove even the most advanced malware. It includes a number of features, including a built in protection monitor that blocks malicious processes before they even start. You can download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE. Here are two tutorials: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide.
  • Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file. A simple explanation of what a Hosts file does is HERE and for more information regarding host files read HERE.
  • Use an alternative Internet Browser
Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:Firefox or Opera

Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to keep all of your security programs up to date.

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints >Malware Complaints<. You need to be registered to post as, unfortunately, we were hit with too many spam posts to allow guest posting to continue. Just find your country room and register your complaint.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy surfing and stay clean!
