Cannot remove Generic fakealert.k/Win32 Trojan

Unread postby esuna » June 4th, 2009, 3:56 pm

There is persistent malware on my PC that I am unable to get rid of. Spybot does not open and when I tried to install MalwareBytes, that did not open either.

Running a scan with McAfee reveals that the malware is known as Generic Fakealert.k (file name is something along these lines C:\windows\temp\uacaf2d.tmp)
Doing a scan with Lavasoft shows Win32TrojanAgent (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\.\Criuirllxldiltqf.sys) is present along with Win32TrojanTDSS (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\UACkkwpdmdpuyxgsc.dll, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\UACwxwhoiptbqyakib.dll etc).
Both scanners quarantine/remove the malware but it seems to come back everytime I switch on my computer. Any ideas?

It appears to hijack Google; links from Google will open up random advertisements. Sometimes these ads randomly open up in a new browser. My IE sometimes closes on its own accord and my computer seems to be crashing a lot lately. Would really appreciate help with this!

Hello esuna, welcome to MWR
Please take note of the following before we begin the cleaning process:
  • The whole process will usually take at least a week complete, sometimes several weeks depending on the severity of the infection and how promptly you and me are able to reply, so please stay patient
  • Hang in there until I give you the 'All clean'. If you leave prematurely because your computer seems to be back to its old self, the risk of re-infection will be very high
  • Perform all actions in the order given
  • The instructions I give expect that you're using an account with administrator privileges and that the language of your operating system is English.
  • Dont be afraid to ask questions if something is unclear or you run into issues during cleaning steps
  • I recommend you read through each set of instructions before you actually perform them

The first thing you should do is to subscribe to this topic.
In the top left corner of your opening post there is a link called Subscribe topic. If you click it you will be subscribed to this thread and will receive instant email notification of new replies. Most find that this works better than periodically checking back here to see if there's any new posts.

The second thing you should do is to take a backup of everything you have on the computer that's important not to lose.
I will do my best to ensure a safe removal procedure, but it does happen on rare occations that computers does not make it through disinfection and must be reinstalled.

Download and run RSIT
  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen to start the scanner
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized
    • info.txt will be opened minimized
  • Post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt in your next reply

I am going to be away for a week from Thursday 11th. Will this be a problem?
That's not a problem. Your thread might be closed an archived, but we can have it reopened when you get back.

This computer may be infected with malware, but there's another issue we need to look at first
Computer Name: XERO
Event Code: 7
Message: The device, \Device\Harddisk1\D, has a bad block.

This either means one of your hard drives is going bad, or (hopefully, but not likely) it was caused by a scratched CD/DVD in the DVD-rom.
Go to Start -> Run and type in diskmgmt.msc.
The control panel that opens will show an overview of disks and cd/dvd -roms on your computer.
I'd like to see a screenshot of this window.

Maximise the window, take a screen shot, save it as a jpg file and attach this jpg file to your next post.
If you need more details on how to do this, let me know.

I have attached the screen shot as requested.
(also http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p61/ ... skmgmt.jpg)

I think there was an attempt at disk fragmenting/compressing but the computer crashed before it finished. Could that be the problem?

Thats strange, the screenshot did not look anything like what I expected it to.
Here's an example of what it normally looks like.
You have nothing listed in the white table above "CD-ROM 0". Normally all storage devices are listed there.
If you leave the control panel up for a minute, does anything more come up?

I think there was an attempt at disk fragmenting/compressing but the computer crashed before it finished. Could that be the problem?
Yes, it is very likely that it was the defragmenter that made the computer crash, because it tried to defrag a broken part of the hard drive.
Is there more than one hard drive in the computer?

In my first post I recommended taking a backup of important files.
If you havent done it already, you really need to do it right away.
If it is true like I suspect, that your hard drive has a bad block, then that's an indication of the hard drive about to break.
It could happen today, or it might not happen in 3 months, but once a hard drive starts getting bad blocks it is near the end of its life and is almost guaranteed to stop working completly within reasonable time.

I left the program up for almost an hour and nothing else happened. I clicked 'refresh' and 'rescan' as well but nothing else came up. Am I doing it right?

Yes, there is more than one hard drive. Also have F:\ and G:\

Am I doing it right?
Yes, you're doing it right

Lets try an alternate way:
Go to Start -> Control panel
Select Classic view in the lefthand pane
Then click Administrative tools in the righthand pane
Click Computer Management and a control panel will open
In this control panel, click Disk Management under the section for Storage

Which partition is system drive? That means the partition where windows is installed, usually C
Is partition D on the same disk?

Unfortunately the screen looks the same (except it has Computer Management, System Tool etc listed on the left hand side). Everything is still blank!

Windows is installed on drive C.
I don't really understand what you mean by partition D.

I don't really understand what you mean by partition D.
One physical hard drive can be "partitioned" (split) into several partitions. That means splitting a physical drive into several logical drives, which then can be treated as if they were separate hard drives, even though they are actually a part of the same one. Drive D on your computer is one such partition. I'd like to know which other partitions is on the same drive as D.

Here's a tool that will help us figure that out:
  • Click here to download Crystal Disk Info
  • The installation is straight forward, just use the default settings.
  • The program should start automatically, but if it doesn't there will be a shortcut on your desktop
  • Once the program has started, leave it alone for about 5 minutes
  • Then click Function and Hide serial number
  • Now take a screenshot of the Crystal Disk window and attach it to your next post

Attached is the CrystalDisk screenshot.
I did some cut/paste so all the info should be there.

Hmm... the program did not show partitions on your computer, like it did on mine.
Maybe because none of your drives are partitioned.

Could you give me a screenshot of the other hard drive as well?
To do that, launch crystal disk and switch to the 2nd HD by clicking on the icon on the top bar that says "Caution 29C Disk 1".

It looks like the system drive is fine, which is good news, but to be sure, could you tell me the size of the C drive?
(You can do that by going to "My computer", right-clicking on the C drive, chose "Properties", and finding the listed "Capacity")

Attached is the second screenshot.

The C drive has 111 GB capacity (17.5 GB free).

This is probably my last post for now as I am leaving very early tomorrow morning. Thanks for your help thus far. I'll continue following your instructions when I am back next Thursday.

The 40GB D drive is the one that has started going bad.
I recommend you just copy what you need off of it and then take it out of the computer.
I will leave it at that, and then start looking at your malware issues.

I need to see a GMER log:
Download and run GMER
  • Download gmer.zip by GMER from here and extract it to a folder on your desktop
  • Double click on gmer.exe to launch the program
  • If asked, allow the gmer.sys driver to load
  • If it warns you about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan, click OK
  • If you don't get a warning, click the Rootkit/Malware tab and then Scan
(The scan typically takes around 30 minutes to complete)
  • Once the scan has finished, click copy
(There is no message displayed when the scan is finished, it will simply stop going through files)
  • A log will now be copied to the clip board
  • Paste this log into your next reply

If your thread has been closed when you come back, PM me or an admin to have it re-opened.
