Google Redirect

Unread postby Jynxx » May 15th, 2009, 5:35 am

Starting last week, I had some prgram start redirecting any links I tried to click on from a Google search page. The problem seemed to stem from when I was searching for some old 80's tunes on TorrentPond. I had a popup inform me that a program wanted to install itself though I hadn't clicked on anything. The program details and info were all in Russian and when translated it tried to purport it was a Microsoft program. I denied it, then suddenly had popups from my Spybot shell tell me that a program was trying to make changes to my registry; I denied those as well. At this point it seemed to be getting worse and I pulled the plug literally as everything started bogging down and not responding. When I rebooted I ran my antivirus (Norton) which began picking up Trojans, these were deleted, but seemed to keep coming back. I normally get a virus a year, now I was getting 4 a day or so. I also ran my Spybot and Lavasoft, these picked up only some few programs that were disposed of and didn't return. I then tried resetting to an earlier save point and ran my Antivirus as soon as i booted in safe mode, this seems to have slowed down new viruses as I now am only getting one or two every other day, but the reroute is stuck. I've tried different Malware software (Malwarebites for one) which have picked up some infections and supposedly removed them, but unless I copy a paste a link from Google, my searches just send me either a Russian site or some useless Spam site (Though sometimes the page redirected to is somewhat related to what I was searching for) What can I do..? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

Sorry for the delay in replying, the forum is very busy. If you still need help, please post a fresh HiJackThis Log

Danke!

I saw the other postings and figured it would take awhile, nadda prob. The problem still exists and none of my other Antivirus/Adware programs seems to be able to do anything.

Step # 1: Disable Teatimer

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the version 1.5 or 1.6, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Step # 1: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Step # 2: Download and Run ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

*Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the Uninstall List,C:\ComboFix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis Log in your next reply.

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

[The Combofix Log (This program first gave me a pop-up, while my tower started beeping, saying I might need to download another copy since the one I had may be tainted. It then ran anyway. Is this part of the normal procedure?)

This is not normal procedure and happens when the ComboFix file may have been corrupted/tainted by a certain infection. Do you remember exactly what the pop-up said? Did it mention the word virut in the pop-up?

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Azureus

Azureus Vuze

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Please run a new HJT scan when finished and post the log back here.

I use Peer to Peer for music for my radio program yes. I believe this problem was caused by one of the networks as I had been recommended to a site I normally don't use (TorrentPond). The mystery Russian pop-up started after that... I went ahead and took out Azureus Vuze, this was a later patch to the earlier client. It seems to have some type of problem with the older version though, I went to remove the first Azureus after removing the Vuze update and it gave me a pop-up with the message "Couldn't Load Main Class." It still shows up and I have tried a few times, I am more than willing to remove it if it would allow itself to be taken out. What would be the best way to get it off the system if this constitutes an issue?

I don't know if it's relevant, but when I ran the Combofix earlier, it apparently reset my system to an earlier stage I think, the Desktop background was switched to a picture I thought I had deleted. I don't honestly remember the whole message it displayed when I attempted the first run, I was preparing to just re-download it when it started running after that. The tower beeped a diagnostic tone, over 3-4, I don't recall the exact amount and it flashed the message box. I just remember saying it might be a tainted copy. I don't think I saw the word "Virut," but I can't honestly answer. On trying to rerun the Combofix it scanned normally with no pop-up.

Let's do this to get rid of the rest of Azureus and I'd also like for you to do an online scan as well for me.

The tower beeped a diagnostic tone, over 3-4, I don't recall the exact amount...

Has it ever done this before? Before you came here for help? And when you boot up the computer does it beep multiple times when booting up or just beep the normal one time?

Step # 1: Run CFScript

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
    KILLALL::

    Folder::

    c:\program files\Azureus

    Registry::

    [HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
    "c:\\Program Files\\Azureus\\Azureus.exe"=-

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

Note: This CFScript is for use on Jynxx's computer only! Do not use it on your computer.

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Step # 2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. The ComboFix Log that appears after Step 1 has been completed.
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log taken after Step 1 has been completed.
3. Kaspersky Log

Re: Google Redirect

Unread postby Jynxx » May 23rd, 2009, 2:55 am

Very rarely, the tower has beeped when the system is locked up and any key stroke has made it chime off (Which has been a few months), when the video card was fried and it gave me the sequence that was identified by my roomie as indicative of a card failure, when I first ran the Combofix and actually today when I reran the Combofix. It beeped twice and flashed up the "Disclaimer of Warranty on Software" pop-up. It's beeped on 2 of the 3 runs of this program now.

Here's the requested logs:

Thanks for the info. The computer beeping during the ComboFix runs sounds very strange. I'll ask my collegues about it to see what could be the possible cause of it and if we need to do anything about it.

Be back ASAP

The beeps you heard when running ComboFix are supposed to happen, they are there to get your attention. Nothing bad was happening when you heard them. :)

The first pop-up you recieved when running ComboFix is ok as well. And ComboFix didn't reset your computer to a previous state/restore point, it created a new restore point. Everything is fine with ComboFix. Thanks to Reid for the clairification. :)

Let's continue.

Step # 1 Remove old versions of Java

Older Java versions have vulnerabilities and need to be removed.

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5

Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Reboot your Computer.

Step # 2 Remove Logitech Desktop Messenger

You appear to have a program on your system called Logitech® Desktop Messenger. This is a background process that can automatically access the Internet without your knowledge or permission. Although it does provide updates for your Logitech products, the fact that it can access the Internet without your consent is potentially dangerous. It does download and update your Logitech products but this can be done manually by visiting the Logitech web site. My advice would be to uninstall this program (Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs) but this is entirely your decision. I suggest doing all updates yourself and removing this application!

Step # 3 Run CCleaner

CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!

  • Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
  • Then select the items you wish to clean up.
  • In the Windows Tab:
  • Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
  • Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
  • Clean all entries in the System section
  • Clean all entries in the Advanced section
  • Clean any others that you choose
  • In the Applications Tab:
  • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
  • Clean any others that you choose
  • Click the Run Cleaner button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
  • Click exit when done.
  • If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO

Step # 4 Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Before running a scan, click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.
  • Next click the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • You can also access the log by doing the following:
  • Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
  • Click on the Logs tab.
  • Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
  • Click Open.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. MalwareBytes' Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log

We'll take care of what Kaspersky found in this post. Kaspersky found some infected System Restore points. They are harmless where they are. I'll show how to remove them and set a new, clean one in a later post. :)

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
  • Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Be sure to re-hide your files once you are finished cleaning your computer.

Step # 2 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

  • First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.
  • Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link
  • On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
  • Click the Continue button
  • Click Run, and click Run again
  • Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe 9.1.1 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 3.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

If you decide to install Foxit 3.0 instead of Adobe, do the following during Foxit's Setup/Installation process:

Uncheck the following boxes:

I accept the License Terms and want to install Foxit Toolbar

Make Ask.com my default search

Create desktop, quick launch and start menu icon to eBay

Step # 3: Deleting Files/Folders

I need you to delete the files/folders I have marked, (if found):

C:\Program Files\WinAce\The Night When Evil Falls 2.rar

For the following folder, delete its contents, do not delete the folder itself:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. A fresh HiJackThis Log
2. How is your computer doing, any problems?
