Bloodhound.PDF.1 multiple quarantine at startup

Hi,
Three weeks ago or so I got an auto-protection result from my symantec security that I had an infected file in my temp file called "DWHAB5.tmp" Symantec reported that the infected file was quarantined and the browser cache was deleted. I thought the problem was solved but every time I restart, the number of auto-protection pop ups increases. Now everytime I restart my computer, I get 8 quarantined temp files. For every infection, there is an infected file, and a browser cache. Also, the file name of the temp file always starts with "DWH" and then ends in another random 3 characters. Symantec's web pagee reports that the risk level is very low, however, I'd like to deal with the problem. I am also aware that the temp file is appearing as a "heuristic detection for reporting PDF files that contain javascript that may have been obfuscated or encrypted to conceal it from antivirus software." If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I'm attatching a HJT logfile I just collected. I am aware that I have multiple different antivirals (avira, symantec etc) and the first thing I'll get is a response about this. I recently downloaded a couple of different AV software packages to see if any scans will pickup the reg file creating the temps at startup (and then lying dormant until my next startup) but so far "complete scans" with avira, symantec, malware anti-, and spybot haven't turned up anything (except at startup) and the problem started before the new tools were installed when I only used symantec.

While we appreciate that you very likely posted at multiple forums in order to ensure a response, that only serves to tie up the time of multiple helpers who could be using that time to help someone else who also has problems. Although there are many forums that handle HijackThis logs, there are not so many helpers; most of us help out at several forums. In addition, the results may not work out so well when you're following different instructions from different helpers. They may suggest different approaches for the same problem, all of which may be good; however, system conflicts may arise if different fixes for the same problem are applied simultaneously.

I would like to continue with this thread. I haven't recieved a response from here or bleepingcomputer but it says my bleeping computer thread was closed. My university pays for symantec services so I assumed I was allowed to work with Norton. Also when I tried to post my hjt log on Norton I was told that I wasn't supposed to do that. I was supposed to post HJT logs only on these kinds of forums. I won't post the log anywhere else, however. I haven't made any changes to the log that might conflict because I haven't received any responses about the log from bleepingcomputer or malwareremoval. Sorry for my mistake. Please let me know if you see something with the log. Thank you again for your help.

In the meantime please note the following:

• Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
• Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
  1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
  2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.

I'm not entirely convinced this is a malware issue. It's possible that it's the Symantec Security program generating those files, but we'll have a look. What's the version of your Symantec product by the way?

  • Show All (don't miss this one)
• Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
• Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post
• Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
