Hijack This log submission

My wife's laptop is experiencing the same sort of Google-jump problems I've been reading about here, so here's my log. In addition to Google search clicks heading often to related but unwanted sites, Outlook is behaving slowly/erratically, IE crashes often, and Business Contact Manager won't open. I can't open a DOS window any more, and all the tools I've tried (AntiVir, Symantec, SpyBot, Spyware Doctor and more) tell me the system is clean.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

If your issues have been resolved or already received help elsewhere, then please let us know. If not, and still need help. Please follow the instructions in the following.
In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer. Please rescan your computer and post a new HJT log and an Uninstall List.

Make an Uninstall List

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
5. Click on the Save list button
6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default, it's named uninstall_list.txt.
7. Copy and paste the contents in your next reply and a fresh HJT log.

Hi Jooky,


I have unpleasant news for you.
Your computer have multiple infections, including a Backdoor. A Backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation. Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of its backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Thank you for investigating this. Fortunately this machine was not used for secure transactions, banking, or anything of that sort. Given your description, as well as the breadth of the problems we are having, I think I'll go with the full re-image, just to be sure we're safe. At least I don't have a ton of programs to install, and I've still got the Toshiba utilities CD to get all the right drivers set up.

Since you decide to reformat/reimage your system. The following advice would be useful, kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure.


  1. Update SP3

    Microsoft has released the latest upgrades to the XP OS platform, which can be referenced HERE. It is critical to stay up to date with the latest upgrades to your Operating System, as this can help prevent future problems. Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. I recommend that you visit the link above and apply the SP3 patch.

  2. Update your antivirus programs

    Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

  3. Update your Your Adobe Acrobat Reader

    Old versions may render vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please download Adobe Reader 9 to your desktop.
    Uninstall the old Adobe Reader from Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Install the new one.

  4. Make your Internet Explorer more secure

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.


  5. Install WinPatrol - WinPatrol was the pioneer in using a heuristic behavioral approach to detecting attacks and violations of your computing environment. Traditional security programs scan your hard drive searching for previously identified threats. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You'll be removing dangerous new programs while others prepare to update their definition/signature data files.

  6. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  7. Install a-squared Free -a-squared free is a product from Emsi Software provided free for private use that can detect and remove a variety of malicious software. If you have a dialup internet connection, you may also like to install a-squared Anti-Dialer which provides some real time protection against premium rate dialers

  8. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
