Hi, I'm new to the forum (and tech-help forums in general) so please don't eat me alive >,<

Here's the problem and what I've done to try to fix it.

The computer loads everything perfectly - no error messages.
Explorer.exe will not load with the system, however - and cannot be manually run again from taskmanager.
The taskbar/icons will blink on for a split second - then disappear.
This all ocurred some time after the customer used limewire to download music.

Malwarebytes found and 'removed' troj.vundo
RegMechanic was run to clean up afterwards. (No change)
Did a full Repair install of XP Pro. (No change)
Changed the names of .dlls related to winlogon/shell/explorer to trick sfc /scannow to replace them. (No change)
Uninstalled SP3 and reinstalled SP2, and then 3 again to try to replace explorer.exe with a fresh copy. (No change)

The business owner would like to not have to do a full wipe/reinstall because they don't have their copies of particular pro printing machine drivers and CS2.

Here is my HiJackThis log:

While I sympathize with the customer's reluctance to reformat and reinstall the OS, that should have been taken into consideration prior to using a peer-to-peer filesharing program of any sort, as the files downloaded with these programs are more likely than not to be infected. It is foolhardy for a computer user to indulge in P2P filesharing, and doubly so when a business computer is involved. In addition to the majority of available files being infected, P2P programs are very likely to render a system insecure by changing system settings and leaving ports open to outside access.

This system is still unstable after a Repair Install, which indicates that some malware likely still remains. A Repair Install can do nothing to remove malware, nor will registry cleaners and/or file replacements. This is a machine that is used for business; therefore, it needs a reformat and reinstall of the operating system in order to secure it properly. If it has been connected to a network while in an infected state, it may have spread its infection(s) to other computers on the network.

As this is a business machine, not only should all data have been subject to regular backups, there also should have been a full image made of the system in question. In short, this system has been compromised and there is no way to secure it without a clean install of the OS as no disaster prevention plan was utilized.

This site, as a member of the online anti-malware community, is here to serve home users by providing free volunteer support. This site, therefore, does not deal with situations that are best handled by a company's own IT department. In addition, it is our choice that our free volunteer staff does not provide support service to businesses which in turn provide paid support to customers.

We hope you understand our position.
