Please help! Google and other search engine redirect virus!

Unread postby Fogart » March 25th, 2009, 2:42 pm

I have a search engine redirect virus. My searches are redirected to non-related sites. My McAfee antivirus says it spots and blocks Lando and/or Artemis Generic trojans when I load a Google search page, but the blocking causes IE to quit, and when it reloads itself (IE v8) the redirect takes hold when a link is clicked. I've tried a bunch of solutions to scan and clean my computer to no avail. Please help! HJT log below:

Hi Fogart,

Welcome to MRU. My name is davis. I will be helping you to fix your malware problems.
If your issues have been resolved or already received help elsewhere, then please let us know. If not, and still need help. Please follow the instructions in the following.
In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer. Please rescan your computer and post a new HJT log and an Uninstall List.

Make an Uninstall List

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
5. Click on the Save list button
6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default, it's named uninstall_list.txt.
7. Copy and paste the contents in your next reply and a fresh HJT log.

Unread postby davis » March 31st, 2009, 11:27 pm

Hi Fogart,

Step1

Please close all browsers and other windows while running GooredFix.

  • Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click Goored.exe to run it. Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter.
  • A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called Goored.txt).
Note: Do not run Option #2 yet.

Step2

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text inside the code box below:

Code: Select all
@Echo off
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\drivers32" >> C:\look.txt
START C:\look.txt

Name the file as check.bat, making sure save as type is set to " All Files ". It should look like Image
Double click on check.bat & allow it to run. Copy and paste the content in your next reply (If the file does not open please check here for the file C:\look.txt.)

Step3
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

In your next reply, please post back:

1.Goored Fix log
2.Look.txt
2.RSIT log.txt and info.txt.Thanks.

davis:

Here are the logs. However, check.bat seems to have run (desktop disappeared for a moment) but it does not appear to have saved look.txt. I searched my entire C: drive to no avail. The other logs are below:

Hi davis.

Okay. I followed your instructions. There was no wdmaud.sys file in C:\windows\system32 but there is a copy in both C:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386 and in c:\windows\system32\drivers. Should I delete those?

Below is the KAS log and a new HJT log. KPS found a few things, I guess. My computer shows the same redirect problem as before when clicking on Google search results. I'm sure you have a few next steps ;)

Hi davis.

I deleted the two instances of the wdmaud.sys file. Rebooted my computer. My searches continue to get redirected.

Hi Fogart,

The kas online scan is fine. Those files come from your factory default installation. We may call it a false positive and we can check those status later with another online scanner.

Step1

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text inside the code box below:

Code: Select all
dir C:\sysaudio.sys /a /s > peek.txt
start notepad peek.txt

Name the file as peek.bat, making sure save as type is set to " All Files ". It should look like Image
Double click on peek.bat & allow it to run a few minutes. The peek.txt will be prompt. Copy and paste the content in your next reply

Step2

Please run HijackThis! and click "Do a system scan only." Place checks next to the following entries,(if present):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0
O2 - BHO: GuardId.MSIEBrowser.BHO - {5b0a01d2-b8a0-4e56-9e6b-cba0ef4b4eb5} - mscoree.dll (file missing)

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot your pc.

Step3

Go to Start>Run> copy/paste the following bold into run box and hit enter.

cmd /c copy C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts "%userprofile%\desktop\hosts.txt"

A notepad file will prompt with your hosts file content. Copy and paste the content in your next reply. Thanks.

Step4

If you already have Combofix, please delete that copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofi ... e-combofix

Note: CombFix has recently been updated to include the option for installing the Recovery Console automatically. You will see the below prompt when you first run ComboFix:

Image

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once Recovery Console is installed, you should see a blue screen prompt like the one below:

Image

1.Close/disable all antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

2.Click Yes to allow Combofix to continue scanning for malware.

When done, a log will be produced. Please post that log in your next reply.

Do not mouse click on Combofix while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

In your next reply, please post back:

1.Peek.bat txt
2.hosts file txt
3.Combofix log

Tell me how things are going now.

Hi davis:

Okay - I've had some problems. Here's what's going on: I've discovered I can no longer get to bleepingcomputer.com (although I used to be able to access this site). My browser (IE or Firefox) just loads a blank page. In addition to that, I've also noticed (perhaps unrelated) that my cmd prompt doesn't work. When I go to Run and type cmd, the desktop icons disappear for a second, reappear, but no ms-dos box appears. I also tried c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe and the same thing happens. cmd.exe does exist on my machine - double-clicking it directly causes the same behavior. However, command works to get a prompt. So, the .bat files probably haven't been running. I ran the latest code from the command prompt which is how I produced the peek.txt file below. Also, there is no hosts file in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc; there is a hosts-backup file, a lmhosts.sam, networks, protocols, services and that's it. So... below is the peek.txt only, I ran HJT and click the two files to fix and I couldn't run ComboFix (since I can't access bleepingcomputer anymore). My redirects continue (with the added inability to get to bleepingcomputer). Help!

Hi Forgart,

there is no hosts file in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

That's ok. We will make a new one after the offending objects are gone. That explains why you can't access BC and redirecting.

I've also noticed (perhaps unrelated) that my cmd prompt doesn't work

That's why we can't run the bat file correctly. We will deal with those problems later after reviewing your combofix log. Thanks

Please directly download Combofix from the following:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
or
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

If you have problems to run Combofix, then try to rename Combofix to Com-Fix or run it in the same mode.

Download Combofix from any of the links above. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply .

davis:

I truly appreciate your patience and hard work on this! I was able to download and save ComboFix. However, when I try to run it, it shows a ComboFix box with an incrementing blue status bar and then it disappears and nothing else happens. I suspect this is due to its needing a cmd prompt to run. I also tried running it in Safe Mode, but the same thing happens. I tried getting a cmd prompt in Safe Mode as well, and all that happens is the desktop disappears and then I get the Safe Mode message asking if I want to continue to the desktop in Safe Mode or go to System Recovery (same message you get when first loading in Safe Mode). It's as if the desktop shuts down and then reloads. So, perhaps we need to fix the cmd problem first? I defer to your judgement!
