I've been battling a Vundo trojan, please help!

I am a total amateur, and I've been following forum advice. I thought I had the virus taken care of but it showed up again on my Spybot run tonight, so now I want to do a HijackThis analysis, please! I so appreciate the help. I can't afford to go to a professional for this.

Have you previously uninstalled McAfee? Is your Norton subscription up-to-date?

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
  
  Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  
  
• Then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked Except for the objects located in C:\System Volume Information, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

Download and Run: RSIT

• Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
• Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
• Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
• Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Please post the Malwarebyte's Anti Malware log and the 2 RSIT logs (log.txt and info.txt)

Thank you for the instructions. This posting has: 1) answers to your questions, 2) a question from me, 3) what I’ve deleted since my first forum posting which isn’t much, and 4) the two requested logs.

1) Answers to Your Questions: I had access to the Norton anti-virus cheaply through my university, so when my McAffee trial period ran out I had the McAffee uninstalled and bought Symantec. It has been quite up to date recently, as I’ve checked several times a week, especially after having found the first Trojan infection a couple of weeks ago. I had help from the university tech department (despite my graduation; they were very generous in helping) in getting the Symantec back up to speed after the Trojan had disabled it. Also at that time I started using Malwarebyte’s Anti-Malware, which I update nearly every day, sometimes a few times in a day. I run quick scans frequently and full scans often.
Last week I also updated Spybot Search & Destroy and found another Vundo Trojan file, which the program removed. This is not to say Malwarebyte’s wouldn’t have caught the Trojan file on that day – because I don’t know that one way or another - I just wanted to run an alternative scan. My computer has been acting slowly, with multiple closures in IE, Outlook, and programs like Word freezing up. I also cannot download and use FireFox for some reason (I’m wondering if my recent Microsoft updates have blocked FireFox???) This is why I want/need a thorough check to make sure the virus and any corrupted files have been entirely removed, and why I used HijackThis, and posted in the forum. I need to rule out virus problems first before I know whether or not something else might be wrong with my computer.

My Question to You: I would be delighted to buy the Malwarebyte’s Pro version, or other recommended software, through Malware Removal.com to support your website if you can tell me if it would prevent anything like this happening again? Please advise as to the best protection. I note MalwareRemoval.com has several advertisements of what appear to be good products. And THANK YOU, again, so very much for all your help!

Having an up-to-date subscription to Norton should be good. Please do not download any other Anti-Virus programs because having more than one can severely slow down your system. I recommend also that you keep Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and Spybot Search and Destroy and scan with them regularly. You do not need to buy Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware Pro because Norton already has real-time protection.

As for why you cannot install Firefox, I am not sure. Let's try some removal of leftovers and we will see at the end if it is possible to install it then.

Backup the Registry

• Download ERUNT
• Save it to your desktop. Right click on the downloaded file(erunt.zip) and click Extract.Follow the prompts to extract the file.
• Now click on the folder "erunt" and find and double click on the file called Erunt.exe
• Click OK. Then Click OK again.
• Click save and then go to File > Exit.

This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it. It may take a minute. Just let it go until it's done.

• Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
• Click the red Moveit! button.
• If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Uninstall programs

These programs either have vulnerabilities or they are just unneeded.

• First, Click on Start > Control Panel
• Next, Click on Add or Remove Programs
• Wait for the list of programs to load
• Locate the following programs and click Remove
  Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
  McAfee Uninstaller
• Follow the prompts of the uninstaller to uninstall/remove the program
• Once all of the above have been uninstalled, please close Add/Remove Programs

• When completed, close the application.

Show your hidden files

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
   Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Delete bad files and/or folders

Use Explorer to navigate to and delete the following files and/or folders (if they are present):

Files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nogayeda.dll

Now just exit Explorer.

For this next scan, you will need Java.

Get Java Runtime

The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 12.

• Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  
• Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12 and click on Download button.
• In the Platform box choose Windows.
• Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
• Click on Windows Online Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
• Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
• Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
• Reboot your computer

Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

• Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
• It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
• When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
• Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
  Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
  Archives
  Mail databases
• Click on My Computer under Scan.
• Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
• You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
• Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Hi Michael,

Thank you so much for the instructions. I have discovered another Trojan file. I've looked to see if I can recognize it in the HijackThis log but I don't so I haven't removed anything. I'm so mad I could spit nails.

I've managed to download Firefox and it is working now, better than IE--but whether that's due to the Trojan file or the new security patch from Microsoft or what, I don't know.

Okay, Michael, I've calmed down and really looked at the infected file. "Quarantine" is in part of the file address--does this mean that what Kaspersky has picked up as an infection really is quarantined and my computer is all right?

I'm very wary of this since my Symantec program doesn't show anything in quarantine, so I've got my computer unplugged from the internet for now.

Hi Michael,

Since I use my computer for work, I did more investigation on the quarantine file found by the Kaspersky scan. In the the quarantine folder there were actually 16 files and 16 folders in quarantine. Tech support from my university can sometimes answer questions from alumni (and sometimes not), so I called them and asked about the items in this folder. The tech said I could go ahead and delete all of them (but not the quarantine folder itself) so I did and then I emptied the recycle bin, and I ran another updated HijackThis log to post, which follows.

does this mean that what Kaspersky has picked up as an infection really is quarantined and my computer is all right?

Yes, but it is actually Symantec Anti-Virus that picked up the infection. The Kaspersky Online Scan is just a tool that scans your computer for more infections. The only infection that was found is in a Quarantine, which is good.

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be.
Please advise of any problems you still have. If you think you're clean please give one more reply so that I can archive this topic.

Now that you are clean, I have some tips & tricks for you to keep your computer clean and secure. The first few (like removing dangerous tools and Windows Update) have to be done, the others are optional.

It may seem like your system will be too much protected with all these things installed, but a lot of programs aren't running always on the background so don't slow down your computer. Please take a look at the following things:

Delete Harmful tools with OTMoveIt3


• Start OTMoveIt.exe
  
• Click on CleanUp!
• A list of tools will be downloaded from the internet
• When a box pops up click Yes



• You may delete any logs that any of the tools produced. I recommend that you keep Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and scan with is regularly. If RSIT.exe and C:\RSIT (folder) are still present, please delete them.
  
• Clear Old System Restore Points
  
  • Turn System Restore off
  • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
    
  • Turn System Restore on
  • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Uncheck *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  Note: only do this once,and not on a regular basis
  
• Set correct settings for files
  
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under Hidden files and folders if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check Display content of system folders
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK
  
  
• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    
    
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  
  
• Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti-virus software everyday. If you do not allow your anti-virus software to update itself then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
• Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
• Install WinPatrol - As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You can download it from this website:

  The developer is a well-known man in the MalWare Removal business. If you really like WinPatrol think about upgrading to the PLUS version. It will give you additional features and you will only have to pay once, for your whole malware-free life.
  
• Install MVPS HOSTS - This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.

  Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
  
• Bookmark this general cleanup link - It could be that your computer is becoming slower and slower. This is not always the cause of malware. Most of the times it's malware when you're computer is suddenly getting slow or doing strange. When the slowdown increases slowly check (bookmark please) this link for tips & tricks:

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

You aren't running Firewall Software. Please download and install one

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most used:

Do not worry about deleting those files (perflib_PerfData...), they are legitimate. These are usually related to your certain drivers and other windows related processes.

Yes, you are correct. The HOSTS file does not automatically update. I would recommend checking back there about maybe once or twice a month. It doesn't get updated too often. But it is still very important to your computer's security.

I have taken your advice seriously about the Firewall. I DID think the Microsoft firewall was sufficient. Between that and the anti-virus program I thought I was protected. The things you learn.

Because I'd lost trust a little in my Symantec, since the one Trojan had managed to bypass it, and because the resource you provided about slower running computers said it was one of the top heavy programs, I got rid of it. I tried Comodo but found it irritating yesterday, so I removed it and downloaded Kaspersky's trial version of their Internet Security 2009, since it is supposed to be more streamlined than the top heavy anti-virus programs, and it is both an anti-virus program and a firewall and is updated frequently. Yikes, I sound like a commercial! At any rate, I don't know if I'll buy it but it will give me time to shop around and decide what I really want.
