infected with W32.Virut.CF and others

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

My computer is infected with several bugs including W32.virut.CF, sopidkc.exe, mabidwe.exe, afisicx.exe. The first thing I noticed was a sign-out message from messenger, which I almost never use. Then automatic updates for both windows and the antivirus program was turned off. This was followed by the firewall being turned off. Then IE started to open new windows.

I used to have McAfee. After I got all that I switched to Norton. I first used the Norton setup CD to boot and it removed several viruses, but the problem continued. Now, it says it detects and removes W32.virut.CF, but it keeps coming back. I tried to run fixvirut.com following their instruction but it did not help.

I switched to Firefox, and the pop-ups stopped for now. However Norton is still finding stuff and sometimes asking me to reboot to fix some of these problems.

Hi,

Normally I would not provide assistance for a fairly recent request for help and would give a welcome speech. In this instance I am merely going to advise you of the following as a courtesy, as the longer this is not addressed anything I outline below could become more of a risk for your good self:

Your system is badly infected plus has a Polymorphic File Infector!

Basically this allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Unfortunately no attempt could be made to clean this machine, it could never be considered to be truly clean, secure, or trustworthy. We could not say definitively that unknown and unseen malware will have been removed, nor will your system be restored to its pre-infection state. We cannot remedy unknown changes the malware may likely have made in order to allow itself access, nor can we repair the damage it may possibly have caused to vital system files. Additionally, it is quite possible that changes made to the system by the malware may impact negatively on your computer during the removal process. In short, your system may never regain its former stability or its full functionality without a reformat. Therefore, your best and only course of action is a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system, and that is the course I strongly recommend.

I had a backup on an external hard disk about a month ago. I am not sure if any files on this drive is infected or not, since I am not sure when and how I got this virus at the first place. Do you think the antivirus program can block the infected files if I want to get back to those files?

Also, I would like to save some files I saved since the last backup. If I understood it right, this virus targets the exe files. Then will it be safe to backup jpg, mp3, mp4, doc, ppt, and xls files on a DVD? I assume they won't be infected, right?

I had an antivirus program (McAfee), an anti spyware program (AdAware) and a firewall when I got infected. Should I be okay now with Norton and SpyBot installed? Any other recommendations?

If it is a USB external drive you could disinfect it and then check it with a Anti-Malware application. Though I personally think the risk out weighs the benefit in my humble opinion and it would be best to format that drive also.

In theory anything is possible with the Polymorphic File Infector and its capabilities. You are correct in assuming the files mentioned should be safe to backup. However personally because of the nature of this infection I would not trust absolutely anything on your computer including the backup drive as I have already mentioned. As you could very well carry out a Re-Format/Re-Installation and then infect the system all over again.

My own backups I keep on a combination of a external Hard-Drive, CD R's, USB sticks and Zip disks plus I also regularly save a backup of the registry with Erunt and store that on one of the aforementioned removable media. So I always have multiple backups if one either becomes corrupt and or fails.

I would never keep keep any backups on a extra internal Hard-Drive as always the chance it could become infected and thus render that source of back-ups untrustworthy.

Reformat & Reinstall Advice:

Since you decided to do a clean install read the information below.

Please make sure that you know what to do before beginning the operation.

Then there are a couple of things you should do immediately after installing Windows and before surfing the net...

• Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
  Here are some free Anti Virus programs which i recommend to use:
  
  • Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
    
    • Free anti-virus software for Windows.
    • Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.

  • Click once on the Security tab
