IE not loading anything

Unread postby fett51 » March 9th, 2009, 12:12 am

This is a bit of a story, but I'll try to keep it brief. A few weeks ago my antivirus software picked up a program running on my computer called JSO.exe and asked me if I wanted to be running it. I blocked it, went to where it was located (temp folder) and wiped it. No problems after that.

Today, after going to a webpage, my computer started lagging badly, I brought up task manager to see what the deal was, and JSO.exe and a couple other bad exes were running, so I killed them and wiped my temp files again. Unfortunately, after this, I tried to run IE the computer froze. After restarting, I found it modified my performance counters, perfc009.dat, perfh0009.dat and PerfStringBackup.ini are all listed as modified around the time his happened. Attempting to open IE now it just flat doesn't load anything, and trying to close it gives me an error message stating "This window is busy. closing this window may cause some problems. Do you want to close it anyway?" Naturally clicking yes it doesn't close.

I tried doing a system restore, but once I got to the point where it says "click next to restore your computer to an earlier date" clicking the next button did nothing. Most alarming thing about this whole debacle to me.

oh, and sdra64.exe isn't visible in my system32 folder with show hidden files on.

Re: IE not loading anything

Unread postby NonSuch » March 9th, 2009, 7:34 pm

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but an infection on this system has been identified as a Backdoor Trojan. Further information regarding this particular infection can be found here:

http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx ... 229311b44f

Backdoor Trojans are the most dangerous and most widespread type of Trojan. Backdoor Trojans provide the author or "master" of the Trojan with remote "administration" of victim machines. Unlike legitimate remote administration utilities, they install, launch and run invisibly, without the consent or knowledge of the user. Once installed, Backdoor Trojans can be instructed to send, receive, execute and delete files, harvest confidential data from the computer, log activity on the computer and more.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Although an attempt could be made to clean this machine, it could never be considered to be truly clean, secure, or trustworthy. We could not say definitively that unknown and unseen malware will have been removed, nor will your system be restored to its pre-infection state. We cannot remedy unknown changes the malware may likely have made in order to allow itself access, nor can we repair the damage it may possibly have caused to vital system files. Additionally, it is quite possible that changes made to the system by the malware may impact negatively on your computer during the removal process. In short, your system may never regain its former stability or its full functionality without a reformat. Therefore, your best and safest course of action is a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system.

Prior to reformatting the system, the hard drive could be removed and attached to another system as a "slave," thereby allowing you to remove and salvage your data files. No programs or executable files should be saved as they would likely be infected, and all data files should be scanned with anti-virus and anti-spyware programs prior to being returned to the hard drive after it has been reformatted. If you are not comfortable performing this procedure yourself, we would advise you to take the computer to a reliable, local, computer repair shop and have them do the work for you.

The source of this current infection was very likely peer-to-peer filesharing. You are using the peer-to-peer filesharing software, BitComet. Using such a program leaves your system extremely vulnerable to attack. Once your computer is clean and operational again, we would advise you to avoid the use of any/all peer-to-peer filesharing programs:

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=33112

P2P programmes form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P programme is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured programme.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates perfectly the dangers of a poorly configured P2P progamme.

As the resolution of this issue requires a reformat, and there have been no questions posted regarding that process, this topic is now closed.
