Potential Malware affecting Windows Vista

Unread postby Danb7183 » February 27th, 2009, 8:08 am

Afternoon,

Recently I've been running into problems whilst using my Windows 64Bit Business Edition AMD Athlon Dell PC.

I've encountered errors upon logging in that say 'Windows must now restart because the DCOM Server Process Launcher service has terminated unexpectedly' and researching this has led me to believe that Malware may be the cause of this problem. This error doesn't happen every time I log into my machine, but before I knew how to use 'Shutdown - a' on the run command I was helpless to stop my computer resetting itself. Also (and maybe not related) I am running into Windows Vista validation errors which is reporting that my copy of Windows Vista is apparently invalid. The error code is 0xc004d401 - File Mismatch Error if it helps.

So, my log is follows. I'm not sure what a lot of it means so if somebody could point out any glaring problems please do!

Many thanks in advance,
Dan

Re: Potential Malware affecting Windows Vista

Unread postby NonSuch » March 9th, 2009, 9:35 pm

Hello,

We're sorry that you have waited so long for a response. As you have probably noticed we are quite busy.

I see from what you've posted, and from your HijackThis log, that your operating system is Windows Vista 64 Bit. Also, it appears that this is a computer that is used for business.

It is an unfortunate reality that the tools we use to analyze and remove malware will not work properly on 64 bit operating systems. Therefore, although some may appear to produce results, those results cannot be relied upon. Because of this limitation, it is almost impossible for us to correctly diagnose your problems. Additionally, any fixes we might attempt would carry the potential to do as much or more damage to your system as the malware that may be infecting it.

At this time, we have no one available with the necessary experience with 64 bit systems that would be required in order to inspect your machine manually. Most likely, you would find the same or similar circumstances at other help forums. However, even if this were a 32 bit system, it is still a system that is used for business, and it is part of a domain as well. As such, it may very likely have been connected to the domain's network while infected, therefore, presenting a risk to other computers connected to that same network.

The online anti-malware community primarily serves home users and is therefore not ideally suited to deal with situations that are best handled by a company's own IT department. All companies have their own set of policies and procedures for handling situations like this, which are beyond our sphere of knowledge. Therefore, as this computer has been identified as infected, you are strongly advised to immediately seek the assistance of your company's IT department so they may implement their own preferred method for handling this situation.

Given that this is a business computer, and it's running a 64 bit operating system, we are very sorry but we are unable to assist you.

As this issue involves a 64 bit business computer and, therefore, falls outside the scope of this forum, this topic is now closed.
