IE crashing at random - malware a possibility

We got hit with some malware. I have so much security on this machine, I cant believe it happened. anyway, downloaded and ran the latest Lavasoft ad-aware and it found the malware file, SAYS it deleted it, but we have this IE crashing problem now. completely at random and at the most inconvenient times (just as you're finishing an online test or paying a bill). We also have been experiencing these ads that open up their own browser and something that looks like a malware scan that sez its scanning our mcahine. I am up to date on WinXP pro sp3 updates and need to know what I can do.
