I've got a couple of problems...one is that I can't update my anti-virus/spyware. I've had MacAfee for a long time and notice the update problem...I spend hours on the phone with a tech and he had me type in two IP addresses (I think in the registry, maybe under local hosts -- I'm sorry, I don't remember exactly) and that fixed the problem and MCAfee can update now.

However, started noticing that google was giving me false search results, so I installed Malwarebytes, it scanned and found a couple of things, and supposedly removed them, but it won't update (I get a message that says "Update failed. Make sure you are connected to the Internet and your firewall is set to allow Malwarebytes to access the Internet.)

I checked McAfee and the firewall is set to all Malwarebytes full access, but still it couldn't update, so I turned the firewall off completely...still unable to update.

I then decided to try Ad-Aware. Pretty much the same problem...can't update, get a message that says "Connection error, check your settings."

Part of the problem is that I can't get onto any of the spyware sites directly, for example, at www.malwarebytes.org, I get a message that says:
Address Not Found













Firefox can't find the server at www.malwarebytes.org.







The browser could not find the host server for the provided address.

* Did you make a mistake when typing the domain? (e.g. "ww.mozilla.org" instead of "www.mozilla.org")
* Are you certain this domain address exists? Its registration may have expired.
* Are you unable to browse other sites? Check your network connection and DNS server settings.
* Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Select the Logs tab
  • Click on the latest log. The bottom most log is the latest
  • Click Open

Download and Run ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

HOW TO USE COMBOFIX

IMPORTANT: combofix.exe MUST be on your Desktop for us to proceed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.


NOTE: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.





  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:



  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.


Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

ATF-Cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Save it to your desktop
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.



Eset online scannner

Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic



Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 12.
  • Go to HERE
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Small road bump, I used Explorer, tried to run the Eset online scanner. I allowed the ActiveX, but then I got a message that says:

"windows has blocked this software because it can't verify the publisher.
name: onlinescanner.cab
publisher:unknown publisher"

what should i do?

Also, some of the sites that use personalization (http://www.excite.com, and http://www.google.com/reader) aren't working properly in Firefox, which is what I cleaned with the ATF-Cleanerr. I just get a blank page. Both sites work properly in Explorer.

I'm sorry if I didn't do something correctly...I *think* I followed directions exactly, up until I stopped with the problem I described in the post above.

Hello!

Do all the other fixes from my last post and when you have updated Java try to run Kaspersky online scan.

Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
