My laptop (Inspiron 1501, OS = Windows XP Media Centre Edition) has gone slow. Everything seems to be interferred with. Typing this post has taken ages. I have run HiJack This and am attaching the results (log file) below as an attachment.

You did not include a HijackThis log. In order to help you we will need to see a HijackThis log that is pasted into a post, not attached. Please follow the instruction in our >HijackThis Guideline< in order to properly post your log.
