security disabled / "is not a valid win32 application"

Unread postby romanos » January 25th, 2009, 7:53 am

Hi everyone.
(writing from my kubuntu machine - infected laptop runs XP SP2, now disconnected from internet)

I downloaded a program on my kubuntu machine.
After installing it on my XP laptop, it rebooted on its own.

Ever since
- no security programs run (all give "is not a valid win32 application" error)
- no security programs can be (re-)installed
- I cannot enter in safe mode
- no wifi connectivity
- I have no sound
- I cannot install HijackThis
- I was not able to install Combo

I was now able to download and actually run Malwarebytes'Anti-Malware.
It is scanning as I write, already 5 infected objects.

What can I do?

Is there any way out of this without formatting?
Is it dangerous to connect USB HDD to the infected machine? Can it get infected? I would like to backUP my data..

Thanks already for any suggestions / solutions..

r.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware just completed.

It found 16 objects, also in "restore" folders.
According to it, it was able to remove them successfully.

(rebooted, now re-running Anti-Malware and then trying to install HJT)

All help is GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks

Re: security disabled / "is not a valid win32 application"

Unread postby romanos » January 25th, 2009, 9:39 am

Re: security disabled / "is not a valid win32 application"

Unread postby NonSuch » January 25th, 2009, 3:07 pm

We're sorry, but your topic has been closed.

We're sorry, but due to "bumping" your topic it is highly unlikely that you would have received a response. Our helpers are looking for topics with zero responses. When you post replies to your own topic, it no longer has zero responses, and so it appears that you have received help when in fact, you have not.

If you still require help, please open a new thread for your HijackThis log in the Malware Removal forum and wait for assistance. DO NOT reply to your own topic until you have received a response from a helper. Be patient. There are others who have been waiting far longer than you, so do not expect an immediate reply. If your situation is emergent and you require immediate help, then we suggest you take your computer to a trusted local shop where they may be able to begin work on it much sooner than any of the volunteer-supported free sites such as this one.

Thank you for your cooperation.
