Sever Busy....Retry Popup & Slow Response

Unread postby laserman » January 11th, 2009, 2:11 am

Hi,

My normally fast computer has slowed to a crawl and I am constantly getting the Server Busy...Retry popup on my screen. :pale: The only app that has found anything on my computer is Ad-Aware and it is unable to remove it. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Here is a current HJT Log file:

No problem...
I actually shut down some of the apps that were running in the system tray on start up and I haven't seen the Server Busy window since. I had Adobe Version Cue, ASUS WiFi-AP Solo, Brother ControlCenter 2.0, Adobe Acrobat SpeedLauncher, ect. in my startup and they really weren't necessary there. I'm still not sure if that was the whole problem or if there may still be something malicious running in the background. Here's a current HJT Log:

Hi laserman

I do not see anything serious in your log. There are a few small things that should be cleaned up but nothing to worry about.

Fix With HJT
Close all other windows and then start HiJack This
Click Do A System Scan Only
When it has finished scanning put a check next to the following lines
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: IPC Configuration Utility - IPC Configuration Utility - (no file)

- Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)-
Now click Fix checked
Click yes to any prompts
Close HijackThis

Now open HijackThis. Click on Open Misc.Tool Section.
Use the scroll bar on the right and scroll down to Open Uninstall Manager. Click it.
On the right you will find Save List. Click it.
The log that you just saved will appear.
Use "Copy" and "Paste" to add it to your next post.

  1. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
  2. Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
  3. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
      Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  4. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  5. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  6. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  7. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  8. Checked (ticked) all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.

    Image

  9. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Post a new HijackThis log together with the log from Uninstall Manager and the log from MalwareBytes AntiMalware in this thread.

Hi Elrond,

I did everything you requested and the three logs are posted below. MBAM didn't find anything. My computer is seemingly back to normal. Thank you for your help and expertise!

Unread postby Elrond » January 20th, 2009, 9:13 am

Hi laserman.

I would like you to do the following just to get one more check on the system:

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

Next you do need to
Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vulnerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader, you can download Foxit PDF Reader from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Please post the Kasperski log and a new HijackThis log in this thread.

If nothing shows up I will give you some tips how to protect yourself in my next post

Hi Elrond,

Sorry it took so long, but I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get back to you at all. Some very strange things happened as I tried to follow the instructions in your last post. I did the Kaspersky online scan like you said... it took many hours to complete. It came up with several problems (see log below). I probably should have stopped there and let you know, but I went ahead and tried to update Adobe Reader and that's when the problems began. The computer froze up completely so I was forced to reboot. When I did, the computer would not boot... it said that Windows needed to be repaired using the install disk because a file in Windows/System32/Software/Config was missing or corrupt. I tried several times to no avail. So I booted to a drive that I had migrated from a couple of months ago and it booted up fine, but was in need of a LOT of updates. I didn't do the updates and instead decided to just perform some backups from the drive that wouldn't boot just in case it was toast. I went to bed and left a large portion of the drive zipping to an archive file. Here's the strange part... when I got up this morning, the computer had rebooted and was at the login screen... when I logged on, it was the drive that wouldn't even boot the night before. (????) Do you know what is going on? Sorry to be so long winded... here are the logs you requested:

Re: Sever Busy....Retry Popup & Slow Response

Unread postby Elrond » January 24th, 2009, 4:04 pm

First of all:
I think I do know what gave rise to that behavior.
O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: IPC Configuration Utility - IPC Configuration Utility - (no file) points to a Windows system file. However the red part shows that the file is missing. It could be that when your computer was running that night it found that file somewhere else and replaced it where it should be. It sounds as if that reboot during the night somehow solved the problem.

The HijackThis looks clean except that Adobe Reader 7.xx is still there.

I believe that what you see in the Kaspersky log is one and only one file that is infected with a number of infections. The rest are quarantined by McAfee.
S:\My Interests\My Miscellaneous\Program Installers\Screen Savers\WallpaperSSLT.exe
That one needs to go.

Download and Run OTMoveIt3

Download OTMoveIt3 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit3.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
Files:
S:\My Interests\My Miscellaneous\Program Installers\Screen Savers\WallpaperSSLT.exe

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3

Please post the log from OTMoveIt3 and let me know how the computer behaves now. Also tell me what is the T: drive?

Hi Elrond,

I'm not sure I did the OTMoveIt3 procedure you requested correctly. I copied the code from the codebox and pasted it under the yellow bar and pressed "MoveIt!", but all that appeared under the Results window was the following:

************
Error: Unable to interpret <Files:> in the current context!
Error: Unable to interpret <S:\My Interests\My Miscellaneous\Program Installers\Screen Savers\WallpaperSSLT.exe> in the current context!

OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.8.0 log created on 01242009_215145
************

Is this what was supposed to happen?

Anyway...
The T: drive on my computer is a 320GB physical drive used solely for housing backups and archives from all other drives. It is completely seperate from the 3 drive (320GB each) RAID array that contains the Primary System partition (C: drive - 150GB) and an off-Primary "My Files" partition containing all personal files from all apps (S: drive - 450GB). F: drive (80GB) is also a physical drive seperate from the RAID array that contains a bootable OS (basically, the version of my computer prior to migrating the system to the RAID volume a month or so ago).

Consequently, I have been getting an error on one of the 3 drives in the array upon boot, but it always comes up as "Degraded - Bootable" and "Do you want the array to be rebuilt in the OS". I always answer "Yes" and it boots up fine and everything looks good in Dish Management so I haven't really considered it a major problem. Just thought you should know in case it helps you to further diagnose any problems.

Thanks for your continued help!

Hi laserman
No that was not what should have happened. It did not find it or like it. Probably the problem is that it is an RAID array and the OTMoveIt3 did not understand what it was looking for.
As I understand from your comments that you are reasonable computer savvy I would appreciate you could manually try to find the following files and delete them. They are heavily infected.
S:\My Interests\My Miscellaneous\Program Installers\Screen Savers\WallpaperSSLT.exe
T:\S Drive\My Interests\My Miscellaneous\Program Installers\Screen Savers\WallpaperSSLT.exe

Let me know how it went.

Hi Elrond,

I had no problem removing both of those files manually. Then I emptied my Recycle Bin so they should be gone for good.

Should I do anything else?

Everything seems to be fine... just very sluggish response opening apps and navagating within apps.

I have a theory as to what may be creating some of the lag...
I've been looking at the processes that run when no user apps are open and being used and I've noticed some groups of processes that are major memory users...

(1) I know the processes k2server.exe, k2admin.exe, swsoc.exe, swstrtr.exe, jrun.exe and jrunsvc.exe are all related to the Macromedia ColdFusion capabilities of my Dreamweaver 8 app. They collectively use up around 95MB of memory at all times. I rarely use Dreamweaver and I'm not sure if it's absolutely necessary for these processes to run all the time. Should I uninstall or is there a way to not have these processes run all the time?

(2)I know the processes Mcshield.exe, McNASvc.exe, McProxy.exe, mcmscsvc.exe, mcsysmon.exe, MpfSrv.exe, msksrver.exe and mcagent.exe are all related to McAfee SecurityCenter. They collectively use up about 140MB of memory at all times. Not sure if I should switch to a security software with a lower impact on system resources like Kaspersky... any advice?

(3)Finally, I know that svchost.exe is the generic host process name for services running from DLL's. However, I constantly have 7+ instances of this process running and using over 275MB of system memory. Is this normal?

I know these may not be malware-related issues, so just let me know if I am going to far off on a tangent for the intended scope of this forum. You expert advice on any of these issues is greatly appreciated.

Re: Sever Busy....Retry Popup & Slow Response

Unread postby Elrond » January 26th, 2009, 2:35 pm

I can see that the machine could be a bit sluggish with that much heavy stuff going on.

1: I do not know much about Dreamweaver and I would therefore not dare to give you any advice on this.

2: I prefer to use separate programs for each of the functions. I personally use ESET Nod32 as antivirus, Online Armor as firewall, Winpatrol as to control what autostarts and also as a real time protection. All of them have small footprints. Others have other ideas but this is my setup.

3: This could well be normal. It totally depends on what is running.

Before I let you go I would like to run the following although so far everything has come back clean or cleaned up I want to look a bit deeper because of the sluggishness.

Download DDS

Download at your desktop DDS from one of the links below:

Link1
Link2
Link3
  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • A black Screen will open, just read the contents and do nothing.
  • When the tool finish it will open 2 reports.
  • Copy/paste both reports back here and remove DDS from your desktop.

Post the log in this thread.
