Unread postby Peterm1 » January 9th, 2009, 6:03 am

Hi I am looking for help (again),

I had a post here for a considerable time with no response, but someone eventually found my post around xmas time Unfortunately I was away on leave over xmas and so that post was closed and archived. I am now re-posting requesting help again. This prior post explains the problem

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=37925&p=388080#p388080

And of course here is my latest Hijack this log. Help would be greatly appreciated as I have been unable to fix this issue which effectively has hijacked my eBay results.

Re: Problems with Ad Yield Manager - please help

Unread postby peku006 » January 17th, 2009, 5:39 am

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is peku006 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.
I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

Please observe these rules while we work:

  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

Multiple Anti-Virus Software
You have more than one anti-virus application running on your computer:
Avira
AVG

The problem with having more than one anti-virus application running is that they will be fighting over the same rights, and this can make your system unstable as well as reduce your security rather than increase it.
You need to take care of this before we can proceed.

1 - Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • The log can also be found here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

2 - download and run RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt<- (will be maximized) and info.txt<- (will be minimized)

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

1.the logs from RSIT (log.txt ,info.txt)
2. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log

Thanks peku006

HI and thanks again

I have Malwarebytes on my PC already but have updated the definitions and re run it. It shows no infection but I have run other anti malware programs previously that have recognized and removed infections that MWB had missed (it seems they all recognize something different.) At the moment all scans come up negative but there is still something hijacking my eBay search results. The extra anti virus software was an attempt to find the source of problems but I have no removed AVG in favor of Avir

In any event here are my log file results.

Re: Problems with Ad Yield Manager - please help

Unread postby peku006 » January 19th, 2009, 4:49 am

Hi Peter

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

uTorrent

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).NOW

Create an uninstall list
1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Thanks peku006

OK I have followed all steps up to the point of running the Kasperski online scan. I will be away from my desk now for possibly two days and will need to run it after I get back. regards and thanks Peter

PS In answer to your question about the PC.....apart from the problem with the eBay results that I had mentioned at the outset, I have noticed recently that my system is considerably more unstable than normal and I keep getting Windows Explorer crashes very frequently. I had thought this might be due to some possibly poorly configured shell extensions that I had previously installed (I have been progressively uninstalling them to see if there is any change to the system stability.) But these have been on the PC for quite a while now and the problem has gotten worse.

Do you think this could possibly be related to an infection?

I have not yet had time to check to see if the eBay issue has resolved with the above but will do so ASAP.

Incidentally I am still not sure that this has so far fully fixed the problem I originally had - that eBay results were being hijacked. There is now no longer an indication that the page is trying to download anything associated with ad yield manager but certain (but strangely not all) searches stll behave much the same way as before - I get what seems to be an OK first results page from my search but when I hit the link to go to the next page it simply returns me to the top of that page and sits there. I would normally think this is a problem with the web server or middleware accessing the database but it looks too much like the problem I have been getting with Ad Yield Manager.

Hi Peter
Let's run another online-scan......

1 - F-Secure Online Scan

  1. Please go to F-Secure website to perform an online scan. Click on Start scanning at the bottom of the page.
  2. You may be prompted to install an ActiveX before you are able to accept the License Agreement. If prompted, please install it. After installing, the Accept button will be available.
  3. Click on Accept to accept the License Agreement.
  4. Click on Custom Scan.
    • Under Virus Scan Options, select the Scan whole system option.
    • Under Other Scan Options, select these options:
      • Scan all files
      • Scan whole system for rootkits
      • Scan whole system for spyware
      • Scan inside archives
      • Use advanced heuristics
  5. Click Start.
  6. It will start installing the scanner and virus definitions. Once the installation is done, it will start scanning automatically. This takes a while. Please be patient.
  7. Click on I want decide item by item.
  8. Under Actions, select None for all infections found.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Click on Show Report.
  11. Please copy and paste this report in your next reply.
  12. Click Finish.

2 - Download and Run GooredFix

GooredFix

Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop. Double-click Goored.exe to run it. Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter. A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called Goored.txt). Note: Do not run Option #2 yet.

Please reply with

1. the F-Secure online scanner report
2. the report from Goored

Thanks peku006

I am worried about this F secure scanner. This is my third attempt at scanning my PC with it. It is more than slow- it is glacial. On two prior occasions I have started it and after almost 24 hours of scanning it has still been going but then crashed before finishing forcing me to restart. As I write this post, the thing has been scanning ONE FILE for the past 10 minutes or more. Surely this cannot be right?

EDIT: OK its now some hours later and has sped up again to a more normal speed now it is through the particular files that it was handling very slowly - which seemed to be Windows Installer files. But it still is clear that even if it does not crash the scan will take well over 12 hours......its only a small way into my program files. Iis this normal?
