Hi Chryssi2001,

The Malwarebytes scan found 3 infections, which I removed. Below is the new log. I also ran a scan with my Trend Micro (which originally found the spyware), and it shows nothing now.

The PC has been running O.K., and I didn't suspect any virus until I saw it in my T.M. scan. I just didn't think it wise to type in any important passwords with that Trojan in my files.

Hello Topique,

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

XP_AntiSpyware

Do not worry if you can't find it. I just want to double check.
----------------------------------------------
Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
----------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Hello Topique,

Set Your Computer to Show All Files
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK.
In addition, go to Start, Search.  When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom.
Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
----------------------------------------------
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following Folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp

Right-Click and empty all the contents of the folder.
----------------------------------------------
Please download ATF cleaner
Make sure that all browser windows are closed.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All and UNCHECK Cookies.

Hi Chryssi,

I've hit a snag doing the following:

>C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp
>Right-Click and empty all the contents of the folder.

When I right click on the folder, there is no option to empty the contents, and when I expand it, there are many other temp folders and they don't allow me to empty them, saying "access denied".

Hello Topique,

Please skip that step, and do the rest.

Tell me if you got any message after you follow my instructions for safe mode.

Do not run Kaspersky yet.

Do you know what this is?

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\jkos-Owner\binaries\ScanningProcess.exe

I also see this in Kaspersky report:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\wm_hooks.dll
which usually is a part ov VNC, but yours is located in Temporary Folder.
Do you have VNC installed?
See here and tell me.

Post back, and answer all my questions please.

Hi Chryssi2001,

I may have had a VNC installed a while back when a computer tech was trying to fix my machine from his shop (I live way out in the country). I do recall him telling me to download that type of file, but we never used it because my dial-up connection at that time was too slow.

[color=#FF0040]>Do you know what this is?
Quote:
[b]C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\jkos-Owner\binaries\ScanningProcess.exe[/color
]

I don't recognize that, unless it has something to do with my HP Scanner.

I did download and run the ATF cleaner.

As for getting into the Safe Mode...another problem. When I tap the F8 key, all I get is "Keyboard Error", and nothing else. My keyboard seems to function fine otherwise. But for a while now, my computer will no longer restart from "Restart" mode, it just hangs in a black screen with a flashing white dot. I always have to turn it completely off to restart programs.
Is there another way I can get to the Safe Mode?

Thanks,
Topique

Hello Topique,

Try again to go in Safe mode, when you restart the pc, but hit F8 more slowly, and it may work. The error you get, might be because you hit too fast F8.

Let me know.

I will check about the Restart problem you have and tell you what i found later.

Hi Chryssi2001,

You were right, I was tapping the F8 key too fast.

After doing the process, I did get a message after the 3rd command line (del /q), saying "COULD NOT FIND...." and then the contents of the 3rd command line I had typed.

The Kaspersky scan found nothing.
Attached is another HijackThis log.

The P.C is running great, thank you very much for all your help!
It is such a relief from frustration to know that there is someone who can be counted on for issues like this. I truly appreciate your efforts.
