Hi :)

Before commencing with any of the below please make sure you are logged into the Computer Administrator account for this machine.

Very Important: Since shortly I will be asking you to carry out a repair operation on your computers operating system and you will not be able to access these instructions during the aforementioned. I highly advise you print off the following, write them down exactly or view them from another computer. This is essential as each step of the below is critical and needs to be adhered to!

I am going to ask you to carry out a Repair operation to your computers Operating System. We will need the Windows XP CD for this.

This will not affect your currently installed software and or documents and files.

Create a backup of the current boot.ini file as follows:

Click on Start >> Run... then copy/paste the following command:

cmd /c echo f|xcopy C:\boot.ini c:\boot.bak /h

Then click on OK

Note: The above is a important step that needs to be done before commencing with any of the below!

I advice you also print of this Microsoft article before commencing the below:

  • Place your Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM and Reboot your computer.
  • XP's setup program will automatically start and files will be loaded to memory.
  • When you reach the Welcome to Setup screen choose the Repair option by pressing R.
  • This will start the Recovery console and the list of Windows installations will appear.
  • As you only have one installation on your computer you need to press the number which is relevant to your installations location. This, obviously will typically be 1
  • Type in your Administrator password. If you are using Windows XP Home edition the administrator password is blank by default so simply press Enter.
  • Now type bootcfg /list and then press Enter.
  • A list will now appear of all the entries in your boot.ini file.
  • Next type bootcfg /rebuild then press Enter.
This command scans the hard disks of the computer for Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows NT installations, and then displays the results. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to add the Windows installations to the Boot.ini file. For example, follow these steps to add a Windows XP installation to the Boot.ini file.

  • When you receive a message that is similar to the following message, press Y:
    Total Identified Windows Installs: 1

    [1] C:\Windows
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
  • You receive a message that is similar to the following message:
  • Enter Load Identifier
This is the name of the operating system. When you receive this message, type the name of your operating system, and then press ENTER. This is either Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.
  • You receive a message that is similar to the following:
    Enter OS Load options
  • When you receive this message, type /fastdetect, and then press Enter.
  • Note: The instructions that appear on your screen may be different, depending on the configuration of your computer.
  • Type exit, and then press Enter to quit Recovery Console and remove your XP CD from the CD-ROM drive.
  • Your computer restarts, and the updated boot list appears when you receive the "Please select the operating system to start" message Press enter to load the default OS.

Next:

Please test that your computer can boot-up successfully into Safe Mode:

How to boot into Safe Mode:

  • If your computer is running, shut down Windows, then turn the power off.
  • Wait 30 seconds, then turn the computer on, and begin tapping the F8 key (if this doesn't work try the F5 key).
  • The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
  • Select Safe Mode using the up/down arrow keys.
  • Log on with an account that has administrator privileges, usually your own account (NOT the account named Administrator).
  • When completed the above now please reboot back into normal mode.

If you cannot boot into safe mode using this method, please inform myself in your next post.

Next:

Before commencing with any of the below please make sure you are logged into the Computer Administrator account for this machine.

Please download DirLook by jpshortstuff from here.
  • Double-click DirLook.exe to run it.
  • Ensure that Show Hidden Files/Folders and BBCode Ouput are both checked.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the textfield labeled "Directory:":

    C:\Program Files\Common Files

  • Click the DirLook button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply. (Note: The log can also be found at C:\dl_log.txt)

Note: Scanning may take longer for large folders.

Next:

The only sign of what was going on before is the window for a "help.sig" in Windows program common files still pops up on re-starts, and in Internet Explorer the back/forward buttons seem to skip a page alot (though maybe that's a problem w/ mouse adjustment?)Other than those minor things it's running very well.

Also could you describe for myself what actually happens when you reboot and or start Internet Explorer that creates this. A screen-shot would be of benefit so I can get a better idea off what you exactly mean. How to provide as follows:

Please download screenshot.exe by AutoIT Team and save it to a folder of your choice.

  • Enable Quick Launch Toolbar (if you don’t have it on already) by right-clicking the Taskbar and choosing Toolbars > Quick Launch. (You’ll see it appear to the left of the main Taskbar - by default it will contain just two icons Internet Explorer, and Show Desktop)
  • Navigate to the folder where you saved screenshot.exe, click on Screenshot and drag it to your Quick Launch Toolbar.
  • Recreate the error that your getting
  • With the error your receiving showing on your desktop scroll or place your pointer on the screenshot icon in your Quick Launch Toolbar and click once. If you get a security warning, simply click Run.
  • A new JPEG Image of your desk top will appear in the folder where you saved screenshot .exe
  • Add that as an attachment to your next post.

Next:

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") to download Silent Runners.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Run Silent Runners by doubleclicking the Silent Runners icon on your desktop.
  • A prompt will appear on your Desktop, press Yes. A brief prompt will now appear then disappear.
  • Also you will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, double-click the new text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.

Note: If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Next:

Now I would like to check the current state of the Boot.ini file to check if the repair carried out ealier has been successful as follows:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad: <----Start >> Run... type in notepad and select OK

Code: Select all
@Echo off
xcopy C:\boot.ini "%userprofile%\desktop\" /h
attrib -s -h "%userprofile%\desktop\boot.ini"
ren "%userprofile%\desktop\boot.ini" bootini.txt
Del look.bat

  • Go to File >> Save As
  • Save File name as "Look.bat" <-- Make sure to include the quotes.
  • Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
  • It should look like this: Image
Now double click on the desktop Look.bat to run the batch file. It will self-delete when completed and produce a notepad text file named bootini on your desktop.

Please post back the contents of this notepad file in your next post.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • dl_log.txt
  • Requested screenshot.
  • Silent Runners report.
  • Results of Look.Bat.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Re: My computer is infected w/ a bunch of nasties!

Unread postby akscott » October 28th, 2008, 12:14 am

I had to try a bunch of times before the computer could find my operating system in Recovery Console.
Ran chkdsk a couple times before it finally appeared.

I could not boot up in safe mode. Got the following:

Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS|....
There was a screen full of this with different listed drivers, but it would not boot, had to escape and boot in normal mode.

Here are the files requested:

Boot.ini

[boot loader]
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Hi :)

Before commencing with any of the below please make sure you are logged into the Computer Administrator account for this machine.

Operating System Query:

Can you please inform myself exactly please what happens when you boot-up into Safe Mode. Does the system stall for a prolonged period of time? and if so can you post back exactly what is showing on the last driver file on your monitors screen please.

Have you upgraded your Computers Operating System to XP Media and or carried out a reformat/reinstall within the last six months?

If so to either can you describe exactly what actions you carried out please.

Note: Remember to boot into Safe Mode safely as follows:

  • If your computer is running, shut down Windows, then turn the power off.
  • Wait 30 seconds, then turn the computer on, and begin tapping the F8 key (if this doesn't work try the F5 key).
  • The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
  • Select Safe Mode using the up/down arrow keys.
  • Log on with an account that has administrator privileges, usually your own account (NOT the account named Administrator).
  • When completed the above now please reboot back into normal mode.

If you cannot boot into safe mode using this method, please inform myself in your next post.

Next:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad: <----Start >> Run... type in notepad and select OK

Code: Select all
Echo off
Del "%USERPROFILE%\desktop\bootini.txt"
Del "%USERPROFILE%\desktop\boot.ini"
SC Stop SysEnforce
SC Delete SysEnforce
Xcopy C:\boot.ini "%userprofile%\desktop\" /h
Attrib -s -h "%userprofile%\desktop\boot.ini"
Ren "%userprofile%\desktop\boot.ini" bootini.txt
Del %0

  • Go to File >> Save As
  • Save File name as "Dakeyras.bat" <-- Make sure to include the quotes.
  • Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
  • It should look like this: Image
Now double click on the desktop Dakeyras.bat to run the batch file. It will self-delete when completed and produce a notepad text file named bootini on your desktop.

Next:

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller.

  • Right click the downloaded BFU folder, and choose Extract All.
  • Click Next.
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to:
  • Click Browse
  • Click on the + sign next to My Computer:
  • Click on Local Disk (C:).
  • Now Click on Make New Folder
  • Type in BFU
  • Click Next, and Uncheck the Show Extracted Files box and then click Finish.

Next:

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download DeepDive Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier, IE: C:\BFU.

Then, please go to Start >> My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.

  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon Image and select DeepDive.bfu
  • Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (Do not be startled as your taskbar will disappear for a little while.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
  • A notepad file called BFUlogdeepdive.txt will be created on the systemdrive (usually the location will be C:\BFUlogdeepdive.txt). Post the content of that file in your next reply please.

Next:

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10

Reason: Older versions of this application can be used as a exploit by malware as a means to infect/re-infect a system.

Then please download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.

Note: Update 10 is also available if you prefer. It does not, however, include any security updates.

Next:

Please re-open HiJackThis and select Scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

Now click on Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Next click Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK.
  • Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are checked.
  • You can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Click on OK then Yes.
  • Now Reboot(restart) your computer.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Operating System Querys.
  • BFUlogdeepdive.txt
  • Results of the newly created bootini.txt file on your desktop.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

My Windows version is XP Media Edition (came with the computer when I bought it)
I have not reformatted or reinstalled Windows. I did install Windows XP service pack 3
not too long ago.

In safe mode I get 2 different scenarios, depending on what I click on to start Windows.
If I click on "Windows XP Home Edition" I get the big list of drivers that freezes the PC up
completely. Where it hangs up at is the following:

mutli(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\agpCPQ.sys

If I click on Windows XP Media Edition I get the following:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system32\hal.dll
please re-install a copy of the above file.

Hi :)

Thank you for answering my Operating System Query's, this has been of help with my diagnosis. Also good work on carrying out the tasks from my last post, you did very well!

BTW, the Help.sig file window no longer pops up on starts.

Great news! We do however have some more minor issues to deal with but for now my major concern is rectifying the Boot.ini problem with you machine. Be rest assured we are making good inroads to having your machine in both good working order and malware free. Once we have rectified this we will address the Safe Mode problem

Next:

Before commencing with any of the below please make sure you are logged into the Computer Administrator account for this machine.

Now please carry out the following:

Click on Start >> Run... and type in the following msconfig and click on OK

Now the System Configuration Utility window should appear.

Select the Boot.ini tab

Now click on the Check All Boot Paths button

The System Configuration Utility will now quickly verify each line mentioned in the Boot.ini to check if they are valid. If orphaned entries are detected, you'll be prompted with a similar dialogue as this example:

It appears that the following line in the BOOT.INI file does not refer to a valid operating system:

"multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect"

Would you like to remove it from the BOOT.INI file?

Choose Yes when the dialog box appears. This will remove the incorrect entry from Boot.ini file.

You may be promoted again to remove another invalid entry, Choose Yes when the dialog box appears.

Now click on the Apply tab then on Close

At the prompt that appears select the option Restart

Your computer will now Restart/Re-Boot.

Next:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad: <----Start >> Run... type in notepad and select OK

Code: Select all
@Echo off
Del "%USERPROFILE%\desktop\boot.ini"
Del "%USERPROFILE%\desktop\bootini.txt"
Xcopy C:\boot.ini "%userprofile%\desktop\" /h
Attrib -s -h "%userprofile%\desktop\boot.ini"
Ren "%userprofile%\desktop\boot.ini" bootini.txt
Del %0

  • Go to File >> Save As
  • Save File name as "Dakeyras.bat" <-- Make sure to include the quotes.
  • Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
  • It should look like this: Image

Now double click on the desktop Dakeyras.bat to run the batch file. It will self-delete when completed and produce a notepad text file named bootini on your desktop.

Next:

Click on Start >> Run... and type in the following Msinfo32.exe and click on OK

Now the System Information window should appear.

Within the aforementioned click on File >> Export....

Save File name as SysInfo

Change Save as Type to Text File and save the file to your Desktop.

Now close the System Information window.

Note: the above report will be quite large in size, so please attach this to you next post, thank you.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Results of the newly created bootini.txt file on your desktop.
  • SysInfo.txt.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Hi :)

Haven't been able to get it to submit, says "unknown error" each time.
OK most likely due to the size of the actual log, we will leave this step for the time being.

Very Important: Since shortly I will be asking you to carry out another repair operation on your computers operating system and you will not be able to access these instructions during the aforementioned. I highly advise you print off the following, write them down exactly or view them from another computer. This is essential as each step of the below is critical and needs to be adhered to!

This will be addressing the Safe Boot issue you have with your computer. We will need the Windows XP CD for this.

This will not affect your currently installed software and or documents and files.

  • Place your Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM drive and Reboot your computer.
  • Now type listsvc and then press Enter.
  • Make sure that the Agp440 service is listed, and that the startup type is set to "Boot".
  • Now press the Press ESC (Escape) key.
  • Type in disable agp440 and then press ENTER.
  • You should now receive a message that the registry setting for this service was found, and that its current startup state is "service_disabled".
  • Next type in Exit and then press Enter to quit Recovery Console and remove your XP CD from the CD-ROM drive.

Note: If you are prompted to start in Safe mode or Normal mode, start in Normal mode.

Extra Note: The above is a important step that needs to be done before commencing with any of the below!

After carrying out the above you may have to perform the following:
After you complete this procedure, any video adapter driver you have installed will be disabled, and Windows XP will use default VGA drivers. Windows XP includes default video drivers that make it possible for your monitor to work. However, some features may not work as you expect with these default drivers. Update your motherboard chipset video drivers periodically. To do so, visit your computer manufacturer's Web site, and download the most recent drivers for your video adapter.

Now please test your Computers ability to boot-up into Safe Mode.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Inform myself how your computer is performing now and if any issues.
  • A new HijackThis Log.
