Hi gernodeb,

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save):

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the SmitfraudFix report and both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

Thank you so much. In trying to access the internet, I have since run a system restore and restored it to a time before the malware became noticible. I am not getting the popup anymore, but there are still several issues. Should I still follow your directions without undoing the restore? I assume the malware is still on my computer somewhere, is that correct? I will wait for your responce. Again, Thank you.

Hi gernodeb,

If you have performed a system restore then please do not undo it or make further system changes. Please follow the instructions as posted and give me some information on how your machine is running right now and what problems you have.

Thanks, however when I downloaded smitfraudfix, it saved 2 things on my desktop, the Logo, and a folder. When I double clicked the logo, it said the file was missing and also opened Mcafee. I allowed the program, dragged it to my c: drive and tried to launch it from there, but I again got the message a file was missing, click any key to continue, but it still wouldnt launch. The folder also came over from my desktop when i moved the Logo, but when I opened it, all it did was show me the files it contains. Sorry for the trouble , but I am self taught, and I know there are gaps in my knowledge on how to do elementary things. Thanks for bearing with me- gernodeb

Hi gernodeb,

I don't think you have done anything wrong, it's almost certainly just your antivirus program detecting part of the SmitfraudFix tool as malware - this is not all that uncommon and I did mention the possibility in my post. Please delete SmitfraudFix and it's folder, we'll use a different method.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O2 - BHO: Genaps - {E402C66A-D5CB-441E-9F12-A5A864430AA2} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\xappit.dll
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to both of these options:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When finished, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to your Desktop, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found here if you need it:
    • Start->All Programs->Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware->Logs

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Malwarebytes Antimalware report and a new HijackThis log.

:? Everything is ok until I download HJT, I don't see the line 02-BHO:Genaps-{E402.........AA2}C;WINDOws........
I downloaded the later version, didn't see the line, so I uninstalled it and deleted the files, Down loaded the other version, and i still dont see that line. There are 12 entries withh the prefix 02-BHO: , but nothing with genaps following. Did I miss something?
Thanks

Hi gernodeb,

I'm not sure what version of HijackThis you are referring to, the version you used to make the log in your first post is the latest version. I strongly recommend you let me know about any problems with the tools we are using before making any changes.

If the line is no longer present then that's fine, please continue with the instructions and post the resulting logs.

Thanks, The version of HJT I used to make my 1st post was v 2.0.2. The version I have installed now is v 1.99.1. The reason I deleted 2.0.2 was that the instructions said - download one of these versions and it gave instructions for each. However 2.0.2 said - (use this one if you have Vista) , and I wasn't sure if it meant use it ONLY if you have Vista. The version I have installed now is v 1.99.1 . Should I delete this version and download and re-install v 2.0.2 ? Or should I proceed using v 1.99.1 ?

I forgot to say that the line 02-BHO... is not present in either version.

I understand, sorry that the instructions caused some confusion, please use v2.0.2 and remove any other versions you have. If the O2 line is not visible then you won't need to fix anything, just make a new log with it after the instructions have been completed.

Hi gernodeb

I'm sorry you are having some difficulty, it appears that McAfee doesn't like any of the tools we are using.

We will temporarily disable McAfee's real-time protection, but as your computer will be unprotected for a time, please make sure all other programs are closed and do not use it for any other activity other than the following instructions until you have rebooted and it has been re-enabled.

Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a Image sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Exit."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled. Click on "Yes" to disable the Antivirus guard.
You successfully disabled the McAfee Guard.

Next, please try installing and scanning with Malwarebytes once more, here are the instructions again:
    • Start->All Programs->Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware->Logs

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once the scan is complete, please reboot your computer and make sure your antivirus program is now active - if there are any problems with this please let me know.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Malwarebytes Antimalware report and both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

When I right click the M icon, my choices are:
open security center
updates
scan
quick links>
change settings
verify subscription
customer support

I can open security center, Click on computer and files, and from there I can
disable virus protection
disable spyware protection
disable system gaurd
disable script scanning

Which should I disable?

disable virus protection
disable spyware protection
disable system gaurd
disable script scanning
Disable all of these, but please do remember to re-enable them all immediately after the scan is complete.
