want to verify that my home computer is clean

Unread postby Rupert » September 22nd, 2008, 6:13 am

Someone recently told me that my work computer had been infected with a backdoor trojan; thanks for alerting me to that problem.

I would like to verify that my home computer is clean.

Here is the HijackThis log.

Re: want to verify that my home computer is clean

Unread postby silver » September 26th, 2008, 7:08 am

Hi Rupert,

Highlight the following command (it's one long command) and copy it to the clipboard by pressing CTRL-C:
regedit /e "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt" HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
Then press Start, click in the Search box, press CTRL-V to paste the command and press Enter.
Allow the UAC prompt when it appears, and a file should appear on your Desktop called look.txt.

Please attach this to your next post - under the text posting area use the Browse button to locate look.txt then press Add the file to upload it.
If you have any problems please let me know.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you. Please copy/paste the RSIT logs in the normal way, only look.txt needs to be attached.

I didn't get a disclaimer screen and it's been running quite a while; how long is it supposed to take?

RSIT runs quite quickly and the disclaimer screen should appear immediately after running the program.
Please delete the copy you have and try downloading a new copy to try.

I seem to be having trouble downloading the program properly to this computer. I was going to download it to a work computer and then transfer using a memory stick.

Did the first set of instructions work OK?

I was going to download it to a work computer and then transfer using a memory stick.
Sounds fine, let me know if you have further difficulties.

Yes, the first set of instructions seemed to work; I got a file called look.txt.

However I seem to be having enormous difficulties in getting your program RSIT.exe to work on my computer. Basically no matter what I do I don't get a disclaimer screen and the program runs for ages without doing anything. Do you have any ideas what I could do about that?

Hi Rupert,

OK don't worry about RSIT, we'll try a different tool:

Download OTListIt by OldTimer to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save). Transfer it to the machine being worked on and follow the instructions as follows:
  • Double-click OTListIt.exe to start the program
  • Check the box marked Scan All Users and press the Run Scan button.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will be saved to the Desktop and opened in Notepad:
    • OTListIt.txt <- this one will be maximized
    • and Extras.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of OTListIt.txt and Extras.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both OTListIt logs and a new HijackThis log. Also, please attach the look.txt file

Select Open the Misc Tools section
Next to the Generate StartupList log button, place a checkmark in the box labelled list also minor sections (full)
Then press the Generate StartupList log button and say Yes to the prompt
Save the StartupList log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Even if you get an error this time, please post any of these that you have:
New HijackThis log

Re: want to verify that my home computer is clean

Hi Rupert,

Apart from the problems with the tools, how is your machine running and do you have any specific reasons to suspect infection on this machine?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Dr.Web CureIt to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Right-click launch.exe and choose Run as administrator to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and UN-CHECK Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and make these changes:
    • Next to Infected objects select Report
    • Next to Incurable objects select Report
    • Next to Infected containers select Report
  • At the bottom-left, UN-CHECK Prompt on action, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Note: These settings changes are IMPORTANT, please ensure you have made them before scanning
  • Then select Complete scan and press the green arrow to start the scan
  • When the scan is complete, click File-> Save report list, save the report to your desktop and close Dr Web CureIt

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Blacklight report, the CureIt log and a new HijackThis log.
Also, please tell me how the machine is running at present.

The machine seems to be running fine although I did once get an error message trying to gain access to my Yahoo account. It is just that I recently had quite a serious infection on my work computer and I am feeling paranoid and I just wanted to make sure everything was okay. I have been trying to download those tools but it keeps saying the source file cannot be read. I can't even seem to do it with an FTP client. Could you maybe email the files to me at (email removed)?

Hi Rupert,

I have been trying to download those tools but it keeps saying the source file cannot be read. I can't even seem to do it with an FTP client.
That's unusual, I don't know why that might be although if you are browsing through TOR that could be part of the problem.

They are a little big to send via email, but I have temporarily uploaded them for you, please try these links:
