Hi Paul, Welcome to the forums!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

It appears that you have "word wrap" turned on in Notepad. This makes it very difficult to review your log. Please do the following:

Step #1: Turn Off WordWrap

1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad
2. On the menu bar in Notepad select Format and click on WordWrap so it appears unchecked.

Step #2: Please post a new Hijack This Log

  • Please launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Please Remember:
DO NOT use the Analyze This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet.

Step #3: Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

As we work together to resolve your problem, please read these instructions carefully. You may wish to print them off or copy them to Notepad.

Lastly, please keep these points in mind:
  • If you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Please post your replies only to this topic, and please DO NOT start a new thread.
  • Since there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

Thank you,

Ken

Ken,

Thanks for your help. I have used this board for help before (just last week for my stepdaughter, in fact) and have had good success. FYI, my wife's computer tries to access the internet through my stepdaughter's now, so we have disconnected it from the network. If we have to get on the internet with her computer, we will disconnect my and my stepdaughter's computer.

My last spybot scans showed smitfraud-c. and virtumonde, myway search and 1 other thing that spybot couldn't remove.

Re: Now problem on wife's computer

Unread postby ktreffin » September 14th, 2008, 9:50 pm

Hello Paul,

It does appear that you are infected. Before we begin, I need to stress some important points to you.
  • Some of the instructions I will provide may get quite long. I highly recommend that you print a copy of them off or copy them into Notepad.
  • If at any time you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • Please keep in mind that the instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Also, please remember that there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

Ready? Lets go....

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components :
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.

How to prevent it from being recreated every time you run the AOL software:
    • Open AOL
    • Go to Help on the toolbar
    • Select About AOL
    • Hit Ctrl D and a secret panel can be accessed which will allow you to disable all desktop and IM features associated with Viewpoint.

Re: Now problem on wife's computer

Unread postby HerrLugner » September 15th, 2008, 11:27 am

Ken,

McAfee has been picking up some stuff while these scans have been running, should we shut it off while we are working on this?

We did not see the Viewpoint Manager listing you referred to. She had Viewpoint Mediaplayer on the machine, and we deleted that. She does not have AOL or AIM. She uses Trillian.

During Step 4, we did not find the R1, R3 or O2 entries.

Here are the logs

Hi Paul,

McAfee has been picking up some stuff while these scans have been running, should we shut it off while we are working on this?

We did not see the Viewpoint Manager listing you referred to. She had Viewpoint Mediaplayer on the machine, and we deleted that. She does not have AOL or AIM. She uses Trillian.

I would not recommend turning off McAfee right now. As long as we are going online to get tools and such you really want to make sure you stay protected. If we need to delete something that McAfee might interfere with then I will have you temporarily disable it, but for now let's leave it enabled.

I apologize about not listing the proper ViewPoint program....you are correct the one I was after was Viewpoint Media Player. As long as you have removed this you are good.

Don't worry about not finding the R's and that 02, more than likely they were removed when I had you remove the My Way Search Assistant.

It appears that Malwarebytes' took out a whole bunch of nasties.....that's good, we are making progress.

The HijackThis log appears to be the same one that you posted initially. Can you please post a new HijackThis log? I have included the directions just in case:

Please post a new Hijack This Log
  • Please launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Please Remember:
DO NOT use the Analyze This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet.

You are doing a great job so far. Let me know if you have any other questions or problems.

Thanks,
Ken

Thanks Paul....

Looking better, any improvement with the system?....Few more things to do:

Step #1: Update Java using JavaRa

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website to perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to your desktop by changing the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Now close the window.

*===============================================*

Step #3: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the JavaRa Log
  • Contents of the Kaspersky Online Scan Log

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Paul,

Your log is looking good. How are things running? Are you still noticing any problems?

We've got to take care of a couple of other files. Please do the following:

Step #1: Run: OTMoveIt2

  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
C:\Documents and Settings\Jes\Local Settings\Temp\8A.tmp.exe
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • Please let me know how things are running, and what kind of problems your still having if any.
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the OTmoveIt Log

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,

The computer is running much better, much faster and there hasn't been any internet pop ups about the security problem (or anything for that matter). Thanks!

Here are the new logs.

C:\Documents and Settings\Jes\Local Settings\Temp\8A.tmp.exe moved successfully.
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin moved successfully.
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe moved successfully.
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA moved successfully.

Re: Now problem on wife's computer

Unread postby ktreffin » September 17th, 2008, 9:55 am

The computer is running much better, much faster and there hasn't been any internet pop ups about the security problem (or anything for that matter). Thanks!

Great, Glad to hear that!! You are very welcome!

Congratulations Paul, Your Log appears to be clean! Image

Now that you are clean, I got some tips & tricks for you to keep your computer clean and secure. The first few (Windows Update) have to be done, the others are optional.

It may seem like your system will be too much protected with all these things installed, but a lot of programs aren't running always on the background so don't slow down your computer. Please take a look at the following things:

CleanUp with OTMoveIt
  • Start OTMoveIt.exe
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • A list of tools will be downloaded from the internet
  • When a box pops up click Yes

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Update your Anti Virus Software - I would highly recommend that you set your Anti-Virus software to update automatically. Most Anti-Virus programs will update at least once a day, and frequently more than once a day. If you notice that it isn't updating itself regularly and frequently, you should check to make sure your anti-virus subscription has not expired (if it's a paid subscription) or that your settings have not spontaneously changed.

Turn on "Automatic Updates" - In order to make sure your system stays up to date, I recommend that you turn on the "Automatic Updates" feature. To turn on the "Automatic Updates" feature please do the following:
  • Click Start and choose Control Panel
  • In the control panel double click "Automatic Updates"
  • Make sure "Automatic (recommended)" is ticked
  • set the time that you would like to check for updates
  • Click "OK"

Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer including those for Microsoft Office, etc. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install WinPatrol - As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You can download it from this website:
WinPatrol
The developer is a well-known man in the MalWare Removal business. If you really like WinPatrol think about upgrading to the PLUS version. It will give you additional features and you will only have to pay once, for your whole malware-free life.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A HOSTS file is a big list of bad web sites. The list has a specific format, a specific name, (name is just HOSTS with no file extension), and a specific location. Your machine always looks at that file in that location before connecting to a web site to verify the address. So the HOSTS listing can be used to "short circuit" a request to a bad website by giving it the address of your own machine.

Download BlueTack's HOSTS Manager here, using Internet Explorer (Firefox won't work):
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index. ... ils&f_id=5
A short distance down the page in the center, click on the Download button.
Agree to the license.
On the next page, to the right side of where it says Download Estimates, right click on the underlined word "Hosts Manager" choose "Save Target As" and download the installer Hosts20setup.exe to your desktop.
Double click the Installer on your desktop and let it Install the Hosts Manager

After the installation is complete, click on the Hosts Manager icon on your desktop. (You can right click/delete the other Hosts Switch icon from your desktop).
When the Hosts Manager comes up, click the small down arrows on the Right side of the bar labeled "Options and Tools",
Click Disable DNS Service. This is important
In the Left Pane, click Download.
It will load 80,000 lines or more. When it finishes, also in the left pane, click Replace, and then click Save.
You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.

If you have a separate third party Firewall or Winpatrol, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.

Use an alternative Internet Browser - Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
Firefox << Most used, I use this one myself.
Opera

Bookmark general cleanup links - It could be that your computer is becoming slower and slower. This is not always the cause of malware. Most of the times it's malware when you're computer is suddenly getting slow or doing strange. When the slowdown increases slowly check (so now bookmark) these links for tips & tricks:
Help! My computer is slow
Slow Computer? Check here first; it may not be malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand Up and Be Counted!
