I found the problem. I had saved the screenshots in .BMP format. When I attempted to upload, in tiny little red letters, I got an error message that I missed the first time. So I will try again. Here goes.

The scrap object has a file size of 1.56 MB, I did not think notepad would open something that large. I was wondering if this might be the actual malicious program? I am not at home right now, so I will have to perform further investigation later.

Thanks for your patience,

-nodzoff

Hello nodzoff,

Nothing to worry about.
You can move the file in your Recycle Bin.

Now proceed with Kaspersky online scan.

Chryssi2001,

Okay, I got back to the PC. I deleted the scrap object file as you suggested.

I installed Java update, re-ran JavaRa and have posted the report below. I removed the portion of the report dated Sep 10 as that has already been posted.

BTW, I continue to receive those alerts from WinPatrol with the characteristics described previously and screen shots. This occurs about every fifteen minutes.

I ran Kapersky. It downloaded a number of updates before I executed the scan. The report is posted below. It identified the file in the OTMoveIt2 directory.

Not satisfied, I ran the Microtrend system scan. It only identifed a cookie from Cookie_Doubleclick, which I deleted.

Still not satisfied, I ran HijackThis again. Excuse me, another alert just came up....I click NO in response to the request to change the registration, just does not seem like a good idea to me. The HJT log is posted way below.

I hope all is well with you, Chryssi2001.

Best regards,

-nodzoff

Re: New Malware problem

Unread postby chryssi2001 » September 14th, 2008, 2:05 am

Hello nodzoff,

BTW, I continue to receive those alerts from WinPatrol with the characteristics described previously and screen shots. This occurs about every fifteen minutes.

Still not satisfied, I ran HijackThis again. Excuse me, another alert just came up....I click NO in response to the request to change the registration, just does not seem like a good idea to me.

In this post of mine i said:
Disable Win Patrol, by right-clicking on the task bar icon, and click on exit.
before continuing with my instructions.

There was a reason, and i will explain it now.
The fixes we make with HijackThis, modifies also the registry.

JavaRa also makes changes to your registry when removing older Java versions.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
also needed to fix corrupted keys in your registry.

We made another change to your registry here by removing a bad key also.

Win patrol is giving you warning about one of the corrupted registry keys Malwarebyts' Anti-Malware corrected.
Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\scrfile\shell\open\command\ (Broken.OpenCommand) -> Bad: ("%1" %*) Good: ("%1" /S) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Please allow changes to your registry.

I ran Kapersky. It downloaded a number of updates before I executed the scan.

Yes it needs some time to update.
It identified the file in the OTMoveIt2 directory.

That's because there are infected items in OTMoveIt2 quarantee folder.
We'll remove OTMoveIt2 after we finish and those files will be gone with the tool.
----------------------------------------------
Everything is good now.
----------------------------------------------
Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
----------------------------------------------
Remove JavaRa and the report it created.
----------------------------------------------
Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

OTMoveIt2
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
----------------------------------------------
Congratulations you are clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com
Note 1: If you are running Windows XP SP2, you should upgrade to SP3.
Note 2: Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.
The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing!

Chryssi2001,

Arrrgh, what a bondhead I am. I knew you told me to disable WinPatrol, and I did for that round of the procedure. I did not understand that I was supposed to "keep" it disabled.

I have learned much through your patient and wise counsel. Maybe others will learn from my tragic errors.

I have completed steps up (or down) through setting the system restore point. My son needs to do some homework, so I will install SP3 and follow some of your other suggestions a little later.

This malware stuff is a real problem. Everyone I know has spent hours dealing with these problems at some time or another. I have recommended this site to other people.

Thank you so very much for your time and assistance. I sincerely hope you live long and prosper in the Land Far Away, and where ever life may take you.
