I have a Trojan Virus

Hello, I never knew about Malware until tonight. My Mcafee virus program is absolutely up to date. I ran a scan and it came up with 1 Trojan virus. The file name is: C:\Windows|system32\xevhbpw.dll I Mcafee can't seem to remove, delete or quarantine the virus. I keep getting warning pop ups through my Mcafee shield icon on my taskbar that spyware has infiltrated my computer and it keeps wanting to sell me anti spyware programs called winspywareprotect or antispycheck. I downloaded Hijackthis and pasted is the results of the latest scan. I hope you can help me get back to normal. I won't be responding until after work on Monday afternoon. Thank you very much.

If you already have Smitfraudfix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please download SmitFraudFix.exe by S!Ri and save it to the desktop.

If you can't download it, please download it from these alternative sites:

1. Double click on SmitfraudFix.exe.
2. Press 1 then hit the Enter key.
3. It will create a report named rapport.txt, usually at C drive.
4. Please post back this log in your next reply.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Read more here

Thank you for replying to my problem. I downloaded the program that you suggested and have enclosed the results of the scan. I have some more information I want to add since I sent the original post and did not mention in post number 1. Right after this happened, I searched "Malware" to see what it was I was being warned of. One of the links led me to a program which I downloaded from Microsoft's own web site called "Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool". I did run the program but did not see any results given to me at that time. I spent the rest of the evening dealing with many popups coming from my McAfee shield icon telling me that I have spyware attacks and boxes aimed at selling me ,more than likely, fake solutions. The winspywareprotect warnings even have their own icon on my task bar. This is when I searched and located your help site. Since I posted, my McAfee ran the normal scheduled scan of my computer and it now came up clean of all virus's. I would have to assume that the Microsoft Removal Tool removed the virus. The main problems now are that the pop ups and boxes have not stopped at all even though the virus appears to me removed. Another thing that has changed is, when I go to a site such as Ebay, a lot of the auction photo thumbnails now have the McAfee red logo in the box instead of the photo. There must me some lingering problems here from the original virus or there is an assortment of problems.

Please copy this set of instructions or print it out as you will not have internet access during the fix.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode

Let me know if you can't boot into Safe Mode. Do not continue with the fixes.

1. When you see the BIOS screen, start pressing F8.
2. A boot menu will appear shortly.
3. Using the up down arrows, select Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
4. Windows will now load.
5. Log in to your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe.

Press 2 and press Enter to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?; press Y and press Enter in order to start cleaning the cleaning process. Your desktop will be gone for a while cleaning.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You will be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); press Y and press Enter.

The tool will restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart manually into Normal Mode.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy and paste the contents of that report into your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log. The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note to users: Running option 2 on a clean machine will remove your desktop background.

Hello Shaba,

I was able to run SmitfraudFix.exe in Safe Mode as you requested. Everything worked pretty much like your instructions said it would except the tool did not mention anything about wininet.dll and did not ask me to replace it. I also had to re-start my computer manually but had no problem doing so. During re-booting, all of the warnings popped up once again dealing with attacks and infiltrations while prompting me to clean or block them with WinSpywareProtect. I also have the little round WinSpywareProtect icon on my task bar again. I also lost my desktop background after re-booting. On a good note, I no longer have the small shield icon, on my task bar, that was the source of all of these warning pop ups coming into my screen. Nothing has popped up from the task bar the whole time I am typing this reply to you.

Please let me know what you make of the report and what else I have to do my computer.

The pop ups continue warning me of infiltration of spyware and continues to pop up WinSpywareProtect boxes wanting me to register their product to block these spyware attacks. The WinSpywareProtect icon still exists on my task bar. Over night, McAfee also ran a scan of my computer and the results are 4 items detected and 1 quarantined.

1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
   Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
   Archives
   
5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

You have done well.

The pop ups, warnings, sales pitches from winspywareprotect etc. have all stopped completely now (knock on wood) I had the winspywareprotect icon left on my task bar, after the last round of scans, but I right clicked on it to see if I could do something with it and it disappeared and has not been back.

Now on to these new instructions

Kaspersky is telling me that I must first install Java version 1.5 or later in order to run Kaspersky On Line Scanner 7.0

They are also telling me to shut down my existing (McAfee) virus protection or the scan may not run successfully.

I wanted to double check to be sure that you are OK with this before I proceeded. Shutting down McAfee, while on the net, is frightening to me at this time. If you feel it is a safe thing to do, I will work to complete Kaspersky.

Yes, that is advisable. You don't need to do it but McAfee may then pop up warnings during the scan.

I gave you wrong instructions, my bad.

Please make sure that all programs are closed when installing Java.

1. Click here to visit Java's website.
2. Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7. Click on Download.
3. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
4. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
5. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
6. Click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
7. Double click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install Java.
8. After the Java installation has finished, please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Still a little difficulty downloading Java(restarted computer manually and it then worked out) and using Kaspersky but finally succeeded.

Still no pop ups or any other indication that anything is wrong (or at least we are heading in the right direction)

Logs look good

Kaspersky findings are false positives; files are part of smitfraudfix.

Still problems?

There doesn't seem to be any of the problems created by the infiltration left. All quiet on the ol' puter.

The only thing that I still have may be a McAfee problem or Firefox conflict. I'm still getting the McAfee red logo in place of a lot of thumbnail photos and headers on the web. Ebay, Yahoo plus others. This problem occurred right after I downloaded their most recent version and installed it while I was virus infected. Could it be virus problem related?

Also what would you suggest I do to keep this from happening again? Al I covered by the latest version of McAfee or should I add any additional programs that will not conflict with McAfee?
