Another Antivirus XP...

I seem to have stumbled upon Antivirus XP as well. Numerous warning messages... bluescreen at startup... desktop image changed... lost ability to change desktop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Spe529,

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Thanks for the response.

There have been a few changes since my first post. I think I was able to remove most of the malware with the Microsoft application, http://www.safety.live.com. However, I am still getting pop-ups telling me I am infected with something called joke bluescreen. I think that is the pop up that fooled me into downloading Antivirus XP in the first place.

I am no longer getting the blue screen at start up, and I am now able to set my desktop wallpaper. Also, the Antivirus program does seem to be gone. I still think there is some bad hoodoo on the hard drive somewhere though.

I ran the DSS program, and here is what it found.

Hi Spe529,

Although it no longer appears to be active, your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:

Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps

This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:

Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second step, For Either Version :

Open Spybot S&D
Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
If your firewall raises a question, say OK
In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
OK any prompts.
Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

You have uTorrent, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I strongly recommend you remove uTorrent via Add/Remove Programs.

Of course, my primary concern now is the security of my sensitive information. Is there a way to tell when the trojan was installed? If it's gone, can others still have access?

You are right to be concerned, and I'm sorry to have to tell you but it's important that you take whatever action is necessary.

I can't tell you when the trojan was installed, I can't even tell you if it was ever active. However it could have been active and working at any time. My suggestion to you is to treat the entire machine as completely compromised and follow the advice I posted regarding passwords and credit cards, it's better to be safe than sorry.

The trojan removal is complete so it is no longer a threat, but we have some further checks to do to make sure there is nothing else on your machine that is as yet unseen. I will do my best to ensure it is safe before we finish, but if you need a 100% assurance only a reformat can provide that. It's up to you as to whether this is the right choice or not. Please download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.

I'm still getting the popup asking me to remove joke bluescreen. It doesn't come as often, but it's still there.

Other than that... everything seems to be running fine.

After talking with my wife, it seems we may be leaning toward a reformat and reinstall. I'm about to begin the process of backing up my files. I'd just like to do things in the least painful way possible. Itunes backup seems pretty easy... the other stuff should be too. How painful is the format/install process? Are there any additional risks I run by doing that?

Both scans turned up clean, but I did get a popup upon completion of the Eset scan. It was for something called winfixer. Now that I think about it... I'm not totally sure the other popups have been for joke-bluescreen. I mostly closed them without looking... just assumed that's still what it was. It may have been something else.

Hi Spe529,

The popups related to joke bluescreen and winfixer, are they from McAfee or something else?

How painful is the format/install process? Are there any additional risks I run by doing that?

I can't tell you how painful it's likely to be, because it depends on so many things. If you have recovery cds/partition the reinstallation process should be fairly straightforward, but you must reinstall all your applications and devices, reinstate all your data and reconfigure your system. If you do this I urge you to download and burn a CD with all your security software so that you do not have to go online unprotected. Also, make sure you go to Windows Update and do not go anywhere else on the internet until your machine is completely up to date with patches. Here is some further information:

I will continue with the instructions for cleaning:

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c dir "c:\bluescrn.*" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt" & notepad "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A black box will open and a file will appear on your Desktop called look.txt.
Please wait for look.txt to open in Notepad automatically.
Post the contents of look.txt in your next response.

Clean up with OTMoveIt2:

Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to start the program.
Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt2 as this step will require a reboot
On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Once complete please post the look.txt along with a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know if the popup warnings have stopped yet.

It looks like they are coming from McAfee, but I'm not sure. It gives me the option to remove it or to ignore it. I've been ignoring it because I chose the remove option the first time, and immediately after that is when I first noticed Antivirus XP. The two things could be related, and I honestly don't know if this is really McAfee trying to protect me, or something else masquarading as McAfee. The next time I see it, I will copy/paste the text into a reply.

It does seem to be in some way linked to my screensaver... My Pictures Slideshow.

It does seem to be in some way linked to my screensaver... My Pictures Slideshow.

Why do you think it's related?

The next time an alert pops up, please try and note down the filename and path of the detection, e.g.: C:\Windows\system32\virus.exe

Copy/paste the following into the Browse to the file you want to submit field:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr0.dat

Then press Send File, this will upload the file for analysis

Then repeat for this file:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr1.dat

Next, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c dir "c:\*.scr" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look2.txt" & notepad "%userprofile%\desktop\look2.txt"

A black box will open and a file will appear on your Desktop called look2.txt.
Please wait for look2.txt to open in Notepad automatically.
Post the contents of look.txt in your next response.
