After many trojans and malware etc I've used CleanMyPcRegistry, and finally cleaned everything, but every time I start up these come back:

Re: 2 Items Repeat on Startup after Deletion - PLEASE HELP

Unread postby ls123 » May 29th, 2008, 7:02 am

PLEASE help, as my pc has been freezing for weeks, and I can only shut down through Task Manager.

It started when MS Office Outlook appeared on the desktop without being used. (Full programme - not shortcut.)

Then photos I need to edit in Photoshop are shown as empty jpeg files, instead of thumbnails. They do exist on my pc, but I can't access them.

If I try to open Windows Explorer or Start to access programmes it freezes, and I have to reboot. I can only use it for the internet, and I changed to Firefox for increased security.

I removed all the entries shown in CleanMyPc trial, and it worked for a day and a half, but it's now back to freezing.

I have used different antivirus and malware programmes (1 at a time), and they don't show any more infections.

Re: 2 Items Repeat on Startup after Deletion

Unread postby ktreffin » May 30th, 2008, 5:16 pm

Hi ls123, Welcome to the forums!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. Please note that I am still in training at Malware Removal University, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

HiJackThis logs do take some time to review and research. I would appreciate it if while you are waiting, you could please do the following for me:

Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

As we work together to resolve your problem, please read these instructions carefully. You may wish to print them off or copy them to Notepad.

Lastly, please keep these points in mind:
  • If you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Please post your replies only to this topic, and please DO NOT start a new thread.
  • Since there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

I am reviewing your log now, and will be back with you shortly. Thank you for your patience.

Ken

Hi ls123,

Before we begin, I need to stress something to you. It appears from your Hijack This log that you may have done a little too much registry cleaning. Some of the registry cleaning tools are very powerful, and can easily delete valid registry entries with very little effort from you. Some of the complaints that you have and some of the signs that are showing may indicate that the registry has been fouled. I just want to inform you that because of this, your system may have been damaged beyond repair and the only fix may be a total reformat / reinstall of your operating system. I would highly recommend that you locate your installation media (Windows XP Disc) or make arrangements to get one from the manufacturer just in case it is needed.

As I don't see any real sign of malware in your Hijack This log, I would like for you to run a different log which might give us a better idea of what is going on. Please do the following:

Step #1: Disable Teatimer

Please disable Teatimer as it may interfere with the fix.
First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable those settings in TeaTimer.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Download and Run DSS

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<- this one will be minimized.
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your reply.

*===============================================*

Step #3: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • Contents of the DSS Log

Thanks,
Ken

Thanks a lot for your time Ken.

I appreciate I can now have caused problems with the registry, but that was desperation after the Outlook programme and other things appeared on the desktop, and Windows Explorer and Start began to freeze.

Tea Timer wasn't in system tray, but I did the second part:

Re: 2 Items Repeat on Startup after Deletion

Unread postby ktreffin » June 3rd, 2008, 7:47 pm

Hi ls123,

P2P Warning!

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

uTorrent

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm
See Clean/Infected P2P Programs here

I would recommend that you uninstall uTorrent, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

*===============================================*

It appears that you have been using many different types of Anti-Virus programs.

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

If you are running more than one program, please disable one or the other so they do not conflict.

*===============================================*

In your log, I see that TeaTimer is still running, we need to make sure that we disable this.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Rename HijackThis

There is probably an infection which is hiding part of the HijackThis log because it's called hijackthis.exe.
Please rename hijackthis.exe to goodscanner.exe

*===============================================*

The Hijack This log shows that you have an entry in your hosts file that must be removed. Having an entry such as this pretty much gives it free access to his computer. Please do the following:

Step #3: Remove malware lines using Hijack This

Please start HiJackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on "Do A System Scan Only".
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries by clicking on them:

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.isohunt.com

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click on "Fix Checked".

Once complete, please exit HiJackThis.

*===============================================*

I see from the DSS log that you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed on your system. I would like for you to run a new scan by following these directions:

Step #4: Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Please make sure that you update the tool first by clicking the "Update Tab" and clicking the "Check for Updates" button.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • After updating has been completed, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

*===============================================*

Step #5: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

With the exception of Internet Explorer, which must be used for this scan, keep ALL programs closed
Please do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the licence accepted, reset to 100%.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Please do not use your computer while the scan is running. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Click the Save Report As... button (see red arrow below)

    Image
  • In the Save as... prompt, select Desktop
  • In the File name box, name the file KasScan-ddmmyy (or similar)
  • In the Save as type prompt, select Text file (see below)

    Image
  • Copy and paste the report in your next post.
Note: It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware application you use.

*===============================================*

Step #6: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A new Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  • Contents of the Kaspersky Online Scan Log

Thanks,
Ken

Thanks again for all your help.

1) I only installed P2P uTorrent after all the attacks this week to attempt to find new programmes to save on an external hard drive. I'm normally careful, and avoid them, but as I've said I'm now desperate! It's now removed, and rebooted before starting your instructions.

2) I used to have AVG which updated several times a day, and was very good, but it still let in the trojans. I also used Adaware.

I now have Avast only. It never finds anything, even though all the settings are on high. When I use Malwarebytes or CCleaner afterwards it finds problems.

I stop it, and only use one scan at a time, as I'm aware of conflicts.

I would appreciate it if you could recommend a good antivirus, as I'm not happy with Avast.

3) It took several goes with hidden icons, but TeaTimer revealed itself, so I hope all is done as you said.

4) I renamed HiJackThis goodscannerone as I forgot to reboot after removing TeaTimer. It still showed as HiJackThis in my programme list from Start, even though I did Search and changed it.

Re: 2 Items Repeat on Startup after Deletion

Unread postby ktreffin » June 5th, 2008, 6:36 pm

Hi ls123,

Your log shows evidence of illegal / pirated software:

Adobe Photoshop CS4 2008 Final Edition + Crack.rar

I would like to draw your attention to this, which is posted HERE.

Any time the helper detects that you may have illegal software on your machine, that helper may stop assisting you immediately until you can demonstrate that you have rectified the situation. We will not support fixing machines with pirated or otherwise illegal software.

Please note that in addition to being illegal, this software is a carrier for the Virtumonde infection.

In order for me to continue helping you, you will need to remove this software immediately. Once you have removed it, please post a new Kaspersky Online scan and also a new Hijack This log.

If you choose not to remove it, this thread will be closed immediately and no further assistance will be given.

Thank you,
Ken

This was removed as well as Utorrent. I now have nothing downloaded illegally, and I was unaware at the time this was the case. Sorry about that, I must ignore others trying to 'help'.

Kapersky found the Virtumonde infection yesterday. My other Malware programmes haven't found anything. Avast still says there are no problems.

I checked Malwarebytes Quarantine for the first time, and it looks as though it found Trojan Vundo 5 times since June 2. It found Trojan FakeAlert 3 times since then. Yesterday, June 4, it quarantined Trojan FakeAlert which was shown in Kapersky log, and also Trojan.Agent in C:Windows\hosts which wasn't.

There was nothing quarantined after the following scan today.

Hi ls123,

Good Job! I am glad you removed the software and uTorrent. Trust me, you have saved yourself from a lot more future headaches by removing those. As far as the two entries that Kaspersky found; They are located in old system restore points. The following will clear those up for you:

Congratulations, Your Log appears to be clean! Image

How is your system running? Are you still having problems? Please let me know if any problems still exist before moving on.

Now that you are clean, I got some tips & tricks for you to keep your computer clean and secure. The first few (like Windows Update) have to be done, the others are optional.

It may seem like your system will be too much protected with all these things installed, but a lot of programs aren't running always on the background so don't slow down your computer. Please take a look at the following things:

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound/outbound not sure). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most used:
Comodo
Kerio
ZoneAlarm

Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. You can download it here:
SpywareBlaster

Install WinPatrol - As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You can download it from this website:
WinPatrol
The developer is a well-known man in the MalWare Removal business. If you really like WinPatrol think about upgrading to the PLUS version. It will give you additional features and you will only have to pay once, for your whole malware-free life.

Install MVPS HOSTS - This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial here:
WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Use an alternative Internet Browser - Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
Firefox << Most used, I use this one myself.
Opera

Bookmark general cleanup links - It could be that your computer is becoming slower and slower. This is not always the cause of malware. Most of the times it's malware when you're computer is suddenly getting slow or doing strange. When the slowdown increases slowly check (so now bookmark) these links for tips & tricks:
Help! My computer is slow
Slow Computer? Check here first; it may not be malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand Up and Be Counted!
Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints called Malware Complaints. Have a happy computing day!!

You have no idea how much of an angel you've been with your patience and experience.

I'm disabled and rely totally on my pc for friends, shopping, and editing photos and compiling music . . . when it was losing photos and eating music tracks I was beyond unhappy!

Many thanks for all your time and recommendations - you are truly valued.

Ken - Very sorry to say I'm back . . . and after yesterday with everything working perfectly, the pc is back to where it was at the beginning.

I was working my way through the list, did the clean and wiped the old System Restore Points, checked I.E., then started to install Comodo, after downloading everything you suggested last night.

I was unable to access the Control Panel to switch off Windows Firewall first. The pc kept freezing, and I could only restart from Task Manager as before. I have done this numerous times, as well as leaving it off for a couple of hours.

I just managed to start Malwarebytes, and it showed clear, with nothing new in Quarantine. But I still can't access anything from Start. It is doing the same as before, where if I move the browser, it leaves lots of layers below, so I can't access the desktop for any clean up programmes.

Will try to send HiJack This log, but opening Firefox is all I can do at the moment.
