SPAM bot?

Hi

I am worried that malware on my computer is sending out spam. I have been getting "Undelivered mail - return to sender" messages for emails I never sent. The messages say that the original message was blocked for spam. AdAware fround and deleted Win32_Trojan_Agent from my computer about a week ago. I don't know if that was the cause of the spam problem, and I don't know whether AdAware was really able to remove it completely. AdAware and Spybot do not find anything now except a few tracking cookies. Norton Antivirus finds nothing, but has been crashing occasionally, which is unusual. I am still getting a few "return to sender" messages every day (one to three a day).

If you don't find anything, it might be because the spam was sent out by the trojan I removed last week using AdAware. Could I still be receiving "return to sender" messages over a week later? This morning I didn't receive any of these messages, but yesterday I did. I am hoping the thing is already gone, but I would appreciate if you could help me verify that.

To start with Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.


Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file.

When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.





DownLoad CCleaner

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder,
back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner to clean temp files from your computer.

Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted.
(If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.

• Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
• A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
• Click "OK"
• CCleaner will scan and clean your system.
• When cleaning is complete:
• Click "Exit".
• Repeat for all usernames.

Please run CCleaner on each user account, this cuts down scanning time and log size.





1 - Kaspersky Online Scan
With the exception of Internet Explorer, which must be used for this scan, keep ALL programs closed
Please do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the licence accepted, reset to 100%.

• The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
• Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
  o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  + Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
  o Scan Options:
  + Scan Archives
  + Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
• Please do not use your computer while the scan is running. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
• Click the Save Report As... button (see red arrow below)
  
  
  
• In the Save as... prompt, select Desktop
• In the File name box, name the file KasScan-ddmmyy (or similar)
• In the Save as type prompt, select Text file (see below)
  
  
  
• Copy and paste the report in your next post.

Note: It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware application you use.

email addresses for the return address of emails they sends out, it also look like the emails he has sent, has come from that address.
In this case the return address they have used is the same as your real one.

I see that Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Update Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.

1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs. Locate J2SE Runtime Environment and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
2. Repeat for these old versions of JRE:
   • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
   • Java(TM) 6 Update 2
   • Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
3. Click here to visit Java's website.
4. Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. Click on Download.
5. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
6. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
7. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
8. Click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish).
