Unread postby tonyq » April 6th, 2008, 6:40 am

Hi All,
I have been tidying up a friends laptop, now when the laptop is started the following error comes up on start up.

VsTskMgr.exe Encountered a problem and needed to close.
This error occurred on 27/03/2008 at 12:50

I believe this is connected to Mcafee which I had uninstalled by Add/Remove in Win XP then used the uninstall tool downloaded and used from Mcafee.
Please can someone check the HJT log and advise please.

Hi tonyq

Looks like that it was incomplete.

Please click Start > Run and type in: services.msc
Click OK
In the Services window find: Network Associates Task Manager (McTaskManager)
Select/highlight and right click the entry, and choose: Properties
On the General tab, under Service Status click the Stop button
Beside: Startup Type, in the drop menu, select: Disabled
Click Apply, then OK

Now, go to Start > Run, and copy/paste the following into the Open box:
sc delete McTaskManager
Click: OK

Reboot.

Delete this if exists:

C:\Program Files\Network Associates\

Empty Recycle Bin.

Post a fresh HijackThis log.

Thank you Shaba,
it may be awhile before I can try your suggestions as my friend along with the laptop in question only visits every one to two weeks.

Hi Shaba
I have done as you suggested ,the folder C:\Program Files\Network Associates\ was still there. I was unable to delete this folder I got the following error message.

Error Deleting File or Folder
Cannot Delete SHEXT.dll:
Access is Denied
Make sure disk is not full or write -protected and that the file is not currently in use.

The good news is that I no longer get the error message "VsTskMgr.exe Encountered a problem and needed to close" come up on start up.

Here is the latest Log File.

Hi

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    Code: Select all
    C:\Program Files\Network Associates

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
