cmd.exe trouble on startup, deleting files?

Unread postby KateetaK » April 1st, 2008, 5:37 pm

Before I post the log, I will fill you in a little. BTW my OS is Windows XP Media Center Edition.

When I started up my computer today, a box appeared in the upper left-hand corner of my screen that read at the top: C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe (while nothing else loads, not even the taskbar) and files began to appear in the box running very quickly. They were moving very quickly but I did see that most of the files began with "Deleted Files.." or something to that effect. I closed the box out since this had never happened to me before & I had no idea what was going on.

Then I opened my browser (Mozilla Firefox) to see if I could check around and see what the problem is and everything was gone from my browser...all of the bookmarks, add-ons, preferences set back to default - as if I had never used it before. After that, I closed the browser and ran an anti-virus scan along with a spyware scan. They did not detect a thing. Actually, when I started up my anti-virus program (AVG) it was as if I had never used that before either.

I then decided to restart my computer and the same box appeared doing the same thing as before. I immediately shut the window this time. Now my desktop picture isn't there either. I restarted Firefox and saw the same thing happen again - it was reset to default as if I were never there.

Here is my log:

Re: cmd.exe trouble on startup, deleting files?

Unread postby Scotty » April 7th, 2008, 7:25 am

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Sorry about the delay in responding

If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi Scotty, thank you very much for your reply. No problem about the delay, I don't mind. Alright so I did what you said and have the list. First I will tell you that the other day, I got on hp.com and had a live chat with a technician. She "helped" me fix the problem with the DMAscheduler. I seriously think it's worse than before even though the error message for that particular problem no longer pops up. Now when I startup my computer, before it loads Windows, a black screen pops up asking which operating system I want to open with, Windows XP Media Center or something about Windows Recovery, I'm not positive on what the second option is because it sort of just flashes then goes to Windows without me choosing. Not to mention, my computer is slower than it has ever been...I think her "help" harmed me further. Alright, if you need anymore information I'd be glad to provide. Here is the list: (I'm sure I don't need half of these things lol)

Re: cmd.exe trouble on startup, deleting files?

Unread postby Scotty » April 8th, 2008, 4:47 pm

Hi

You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
AVG & Norton/Symantec

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. The conflict may also allow infections onto your computer.

Please disable one or the other so they do not conflict, then post a new HijackThis log to show this is done.

Note- if you wish to remove Norton/Symantec you will need to use this tool, depending on the version you have.
Norton Removal Tool

P2P Warning!
Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation
Additional information on the safety of Peer to Peer programs themselves is here :
Clean/Infected P2P Programs
Please refrain from using Limewire & Azureus during the course of your fix, so you dont risk inviting more malware onto your computer.

Please go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove all instances of Java except this one
Java(TM) 6 Update 5

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Manager, click Remove.
  4. Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Now post back with the new HijackThis log.

Unread postby KateetaK » April 8th, 2008, 7:40 pm

I want to thank you Scotty for all of your help thus far, it is much appreciated.

I used the Norton Removal Tool to remove whatever was left over from the software, I deleted all instances of Java except for the one you mentioned (Java[TM] 6 Update 5), and I deleted the Viewpoint products.

I must let you know, I spoke to another HP tech last night and they had me switch back from PIO Only to DMA if available in the Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers for both my Primary & Secondary Channels (The first person I spoke with made me switch to PIO Only). Anyway, I no longer get the operating system choice screen when I boot, it isn't booting slow anymore, it's running as fast as it was before the changes I made with the first tech I spoke to, and most of all - the DMAscheduler error no longer appears on startup. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with anything but I thought it may be relevant. Here is the HJT log that I just got:

Hi

Disable Teatimer
First:

  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second:

  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

Re: cmd.exe trouble on startup, deleting files?

Unread postby KateetaK » April 9th, 2008, 1:57 pm

Hi Scotty,

I've done what you said. I've disabled Teatimer, ran a HJT scan and removed (fixed w/e) the 7 items you mentioned, and downloaded & ran a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan, removing the selected files.

I wanted to ask you about these Roxio files it finds. I am just wondering, why they are still there as I deleted Roxio a while back, are these just files that I've missed upon deletion? While I'm at it, I might as well mention a Logon UI error I received a few days ago (I had only seen it the one time). I'm not sure if it matters or not but felt I should share that, I thought I already had. Another thing - there is always a "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in my system tray & I have no idea why. When I click it only has one thing you can choose, USB Mass Storage Device. I'm guessing this was a screw-up on my part when I downloaded my Logitech SetPoint software for my keyboard & mouse. Thanks again, you're a ton of help!

Here is the log from that scan and my new HijackThis log:

Re: cmd.exe trouble on startup, deleting files?

Unread postby Scotty » April 9th, 2008, 4:56 pm

Hi

This should remove those Roxio leftovers

Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat Please save it on your desktop.

@echo off
sc stop Roxio UPnP Renderer 9
sc delete Roxio UPnP Renderer 9
sc stop Roxio Upnp Server 9
sc delete Roxio Upnp Server 9
sc stop LiveShare P2P Server 9
sc delete LiveShare P2P Server 9
- del %0.
exit

Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

Re: cmd.exe trouble on startup, deleting files?

Unread postby KateetaK » April 9th, 2008, 5:26 pm

Update: After posting that logfile, I noticed that this was still there:

O23 - Service: LiveShare P2P Server 9 (RoxLiveShare9) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\RoxLiveShare9.exe (file missing)

Thinking I may have forgotten to check that box, I ran the scan again, still there. Then one more scan, still there. Why do you think that it isn't "fixing" this?

Hi

Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat Please save it on your desktop.

@echo off
sc stop "Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler"
sc delete "Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler"
sc stop RoxLiveShare9
sc delete RoxLiveShare9
- del %0
exit

Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

    O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\AluSchedulerSvc.exe (file missing)
    O23 - Service: LiveShare P2P Server 9 (RoxLiveShare9) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\RoxLiveShare9.exe (file missing)

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked exit HijackThis and reboot.

Let me know that it worked this time.

Re: cmd.exe trouble on startup, deleting files?

Hi

Remember to re-enable Teatimer.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a good program to keep. If you wish to keep it, use it to do a quick scan once a week and keep it updated.
Remember, only the paid for version offers real-time protection

Here is another free program I recommend.

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Make sure your Windows is ALWAYS up to date!

An unpatched Windows is vulnerable and even with the "best" Antivirus and Firewall installed, malware will find its way through.
So visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to download and install the latest updates.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Here is some great information from experts in this field that will help you stay clean and safe online.
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

I will definitely be keeping the program & checking out what you've shown me in your last post. One more thing, I have re-enabled Teatimer & Advanced Mode is still checked. Does this matter or should I go ahead and change it back to Default Mode? I'm guessing it doesn't matter.

Thank you for everything Scotty, you're a huge help!!
