Thanks for your reply. This problem is still very real, and getting worse.

Initially the computer would generate and send loads of messages when logged on to Windows Live Messenger. Now it will not connect to the internet at all. Virus Protection (Symantec, provided by BT Yahoo) does not seem to be functioning at all.

I have run Spybot and Adaware - neither showed anything serious, but I let them remove anything they did find. A-squared, however, came up with "E-mail-Worm.Win32.Agent.bj", which appears to reinstall itself after removal, so I'm still no nearer a solution.

Here is the latest HijackThis log:

Hello kmilne,

If you internet is not working correctly, try downloading a program called WinSockFix, it will restore your internet connection to it's default settings. I would suggest downloading it, and then transferring it over to the other computer to run it. You can download the program here: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/W ... 15337.html

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop.
When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"
  • Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
  • (this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix).
  • DO NOT use it just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next replyalong with a new HijackThis log.
-- If this error message is displayed when running SDFix: "The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator. Press any key to continue..."
Please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\swreg IMPORT %systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg
Press Ok and then run SDFix again.

-- If the Command Prompt window flashes on then off again on XP or Win 2000, please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\FixPath.exe /Q
Reboot and then run SDFix again.

-- If SDFix still does not run, check the %comspec% variable. Right-click My Computer > click Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables and check that the ComSpec variable points to cmd.exe.
%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe

Thanks RiP_ChAiN - things are looking better already...

WinsockFix sorted out the internet connection, but I've disabled the network adapter to stop the computer connecting until nothing evil is lurking!

Meanwhile, your excellent instructions resulted in this from SDFix...

Hello kmilne,

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from here: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Hello kmilne :)

A. Please RUN HijackThis
  1. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
  2. Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... _side.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... yahoo.com/
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [jb] C:\WINDOWS\system32\jb.exe
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZSzim029YYGB

  3. Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
B. 1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jb.exe

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Image

6. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix then post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Thanks again RiP_ChAiN

I've done as you said, and here are the resulting logs (ComboFix, HiJackThis and ActiveScan). It looks to me like the only things that ActiveScan has found are the ComboFix and SDFix processes. Could this mean that we're clean now...?

Hello kmilne :)

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I somehow didn't get notification of your reply back to me. Your logs are looking much better, but I'd like to make sure there are no further remnants remaining on your computer.

Hi RiP_ChAiN - thanks for coming back, I was beginning to think you had deserted me...!

I've run ActiveScan, according to your instructions - not much to report, just the tools that I've been running over the last couple of weeks, but here is the report anyway...

I'm still very nervous, however, about this computer going online, because Norton is still not working.

Thanks for your continued help.

It's possible the malware on your computer somehow disrupted norton in some way, could you try reinstalling it, to see if that has any effect?

Yes, that was my reasoning too, but I've now tried the uninstall/reinstall cycle several times over, including using Norton's own removal tool. It looks like this is something I should be nagging my ISP about, or just give up and use AVG. Do you think the computer is clean otherwise?

Between you, me, and anyone that happens to read this topic, IMO AVG is a much better choice for your computer then Norton AV any day of the week :) Other then that your logs are coming up good.

Thanks a million for all your help - excellent clear instructions, and now a working computer.

AVG is now installed and working well. Next task is to install a firewall (ZoneAlarm I think, unless you tell me otherwise). Also planning to install a Hosts file and WinPatrol, based on recent advice on this forum regarding a problem on another computer.

Thanks again for great support.
