Unread postby askey127 » December 21st, 2007, 8:07 am

Hi JohnReadToLearn,
------------------------------------------------
It's possible that some of the slowdown is caused by your older Adobe Acrobat 6 trying to update itself.
That program has a broken updater which hangs at bootup. It can phone home interminably and slow your PC to a crawl.
After it finally boots up and you notice a slowdown, use Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up task manager.
Click on the Processes tab, note and post back the names of the process files which are using most of the CPU resources.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the older version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident (shows a red/white shield).
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis (or reveal.exe).
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Warning] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDWarn.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Warning] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDWarn.exe (User 'Default user')
O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\309731\Program\Updates from HP.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
---------------------------------------------
To completely remove leftovers from Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Perform the DownLoad for your version of Windows (download to your desktop as it says), then STOP
On your desktop click on Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis .
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
Set your Notepad so it does NOT Word Wrap.. Under the Format menu, see that Word Wrap is UNCHECKED.
Otherwise it makes the log extremely difficult to read.

Tried to uncheck Tea Timer Resident... but was unsuccessful and so removed Spy-bot for now. Also checked / fixed what you suggested for HijackThis and after reboot decided to also remove Acrobat 6 and went back and downloaded Acrobat 8. System seems to be some better now but I still wonder if there is more? I at one point when waiting over the last several days had run several other online checkers and one found Memwatcher something and removed it and then after this a squared found a Downloader trojan which was supposedly removed. (one symptom I hadn't mentioned before was that about a month or so ago I lost the Volume icon in System tray and recreated this from instructions found on the internet. After this I noticed that the calc.exe Windows Calculator was also missing (and still is) from Accessories - I just looked under Entertainment and see this too shows as Empty.)

Top five items in task manager Mem Usage are: iexplore.exe 20,600; explorer.exe 17,164; Mcshield.exe 16,172; MsMpEng.exe 9,372; svchost.exe 7,420.

Thanks for your help - please help further if you can. Thanks.
I am posting the new HijackThis log (without word wrap) here:

JohnReadToLearn,
Let's look further.
I would advise you to remove any Toolbars you don't use. Do you use both the Netzero and Google Toolbars regularly?
You can still use zap2it.com, but it should be removed from your trusted zone. It is a known ad purveyor. We will do that.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis (or reveal.exe).
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE= ... pf=desktop
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE= ... pf=desktop
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE= ... pf=desktop
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://my.netzero.net/s/search?r=minisearch
R3 - URLSearchHook: URLSearchHook Class - {37D2CDBF-2AF4-44AA-8113-BD0D2DA3C2B8} - C:\Program Files\NZSearch\SearchEnh1.dll
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://tvlistings.zap2it.com
O16 - DPF: {8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93} (Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0) - http://javadl-esd.sun.com/update/1.6.0/ ... 586-jc.cab

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download CCleaner from here Choose the "Slim" version.
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
( Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
-----------------------------------------------------
Using Internet Explorer, Please Do an Online Scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.
Go here to run an online scanner from Kaspersky.
  • Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  • A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  • Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  • Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  • Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  • Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with the Install.txt from CCleaner and KAV.TXT from Kaspersky
If the Kaspersky log is too big to post , let me know and I will give you instructions that will reduce its size..

Thanks again for your help!! I didn't remove any toolbars that I know of. I only see the Google toolbar when on the internet, not the Netzero one but I do see reference to one in HJT. Should that one be checked to fix? Also I was reading some about Mcafee Protection Manager and that service might be slowing things down? mcmscsvc.exe
Again here is another list showing high Mem usage (why is iexplore.exe listed twice?) iexplore.exe 28,320; iexplore.exe 26,052; mcshield.exe 23,796; MotiveSB.exe 12,724; svchost.exe 11,520; explorer.exe 10,308; MsMpEng.exe 9012; McNASvc.exe 8,188; wmiprvse.exe 6,308; mcmscsvc.exe 6,276 (sometimes when starting internet explorer and things are very slow it seems mcmscsvc.exe is quite higher on the list.)

JohnReadToLearn,
Your computer does not appear to have any malware infections.

It's true that your PC could be trimmed of a few unnecessary applications, and we can also clean out unused temporary files that might help slightly. The applications that could be removed depend on which company is your Internet provider. If you would like me to trim some of your unnecessary applications based on your internet provider, and do some cleaning, I will be glad to do so.

Other than that, we have to look at the McAfee Internet Security Suite as the source of most of the slowdowns. This has been a chronic problem with this application. The only real solution is to completely Uninstall it and replace it with a different antivirus program. You must replace the application, and never have two Antivirus programs installed at the same time.

If you want to do it, you should download the installer for the new chosen AntiVirus and save it to your desktop. Then you should unplug your Internet cable, and Remove McAfee using Control panel, Add/Remove programs. When that is completed, double click the new AntiVirus Installer you saved to install the new Antivirus program.
Only then reconnect the Internet cable. The new antivirus will try to update itself. You should allow it.
This sequence is desirable because a PC with no Antivirus will be attacked and likely infected within minutes on the Internet, so you want to be disconnected during the brief period when you have none installed.

Otherwise you will have to live with the speed issue, or replace McAfee.
If you want to do the replacement, you can download just one of these free anti-virus program Installers, and save the file to your desktop.
*Grisoft AVG from here : http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
*AntiVir Free from here : http://www.free-av.com/
*Avast Home Edition from here : http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html
They all have low cost paid versions as well that are slightly better or more convenient (frequently faster updates)

Let me know your opinions on the subject, and/or any questions you may have.
