PC crashes when running video progs - spyware related?

Unread postby SheppeyRed » December 2nd, 2007, 1:38 pm

Hi all again,

OK, I've upgraded my PC to the following setup:-

Abit IP35Pro MoBo
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.67GHz
2Gb DDR2 RAM
Asus 8800GTS graphics card
1x80Gb Samsung Spinpoint SATA HD (Windows installed here)
2x500Gb Samsung Spinpoint SATA HDs (EVE installed on one of these)
2x Samsung SATA DVD-RAMs (with lightscribe)
No sound card, using the onboard sound until I can afford a new sound card! ;)
Windows XP, SP2

and I keep hitting a problem with it crashing. Roughly a month after re-installing Windows, my PC starts to crash when I try and run the following 3 programs only:-

Real Player
Windows Media Player
EVE Online

other games that are graphics intensive or switch screen modes/resolutions work fine, as do other video playback software programs like DiVX Player. It's only the 3 programs mentioned that causes my PC to crash. I am pretty sure there's a driver conflict issue involved but given this has happened for several months now I thought I'd check to see if there's some malware at play (to be quite frank, I'd try witchcraft, voodoo or even alchemy at the moment if I could get my PC working!!).

I've run a HijackThis scan and the logfile is as follows:-

so I'd appreciate it if one of the experts here could give my log a look over and see if there is any malware at play.

Many thanks,

Not seeing anything malware related in your log... it looks good. If you want you can do another scan that will maybe show us something that HijackThis isn't.

If so... please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

  1. Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner button.
  2. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  3. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX from Kaspersky. Click Yes.
  4. When the downloads have finished, click on Next button.
  5. Click on Scan Settings button.
  6. Select extended under Scan using the following antivirus database:
  7. Check (tick) these boxes under Scan options:
    • Scan Archives
    • Scan Mail Bases
  8. Click OK
  9. Click on My Computer under Please select a target to scan:
  10. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected. Click on Save as text button and save it to your desktop.

Post the contents of the KAV svan log in your next reply.
