Warning! Potential Spyware Operation!

Unread postby PunkGurl » November 7th, 2007, 2:34 pm

I have been getting a Pop-up saying "Warning! Potential Spyware Operation! Your computer is making unauthorized copies of your system and Internet files" popup box. It keeps popping up every few minutes. I also noticed that my Control Panel is missing from the Start menu. Also, my homepage keeps changing to: google.com. I ran the Windows Defender spyware and it said it got rid of all the spyware. I also ran my Norton 360 and it said it fix all the spyware and it said I had a Trojan or spyware or something, and I fixed it but but it seems everytime I run it, it's still there and this pop-up keeps coming up. Could you please help? Thanks! Here is my hijack log:

Hello PunkGurl and welcome to The Malware Removal Forums.

My name is curlylad and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I have to review and check the content of my fixes before I post them so be patient.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess , simply post back with your query and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

Here's what I need you to do:-

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

Please now post back the requested log for me to review.

I did what you said and it let me run it but I kept getting a pop-up saying "Registry editing has been disable by your administrator" and it's telling me to hit "ok." But I do have the log:

Hi PunkGurl

Don't worry about the regedit problem for now, we'll deal with that in a minute ;)

Here are your next instructions:-

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

When you said to Nevigate to: C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp and for me to click on Edit and Select All and delete, the only folders I have in the Documents and Settings is: "All Users" and "User." Is that the 2 folders you want me to delete?

Yes, I need you to navigate to the folders 'All Users' and 'User' and then follow the instruction to delete only the contents, do not delete the actual folder itself. ;)

Good Evening PunkGurl

The HijackThis Log that you posted has been run in Safe Mode.

Please now generate a fresh HijackThis Log in normal mode and post that back for me please.

It has also come to my attention that you have requested help at this thread http://forums.spywareinfo.com/lofiversi ... 08011.html over at Spywareinfo.
We do not allow this practice as it can confuse you the client as different helpers may tackle issues in slightly different ways which means that you may be getting different instructions from both helpers.

I have noticed that the thread at Spywareinfo has not been answered yet, my advice would be to post back to your thread there and state that you wish to close it as you are already being assisted somewhere else.
When you have done that please post back to inform me please.

Good Evening PunkGurl

Thanks for closing the other thread. ;)

OK, we'll try another scan now

Download and Run ComboFix

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Unread postby curlylad » November 12th, 2007, 5:32 pm

Good Evening PunkGurl

Here are your next instructions

STEP 1

Replace HOSTS File

Download the Hosts File from here Hosts File Download Link
Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html
If you download the hosts file some users report a slow system afterwards, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
  • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
  • Click run
  • In the dialog box, type services.msc
  • hit enter, then locate dns client
  • Highlight it, then double-click it.
  • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
  • Click ok.

Visit the Website for more information.

STEP 2

Viewpoint

I see Viewpoint installed..

Viewpoint is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article.

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present:
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player.

STEP 3

Safe Mode/Hidden Files and Folders

I would like you to configure your system to show hidden files and folders

To do that follow this instruction.
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.

Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Now please boot your system into Safe Mode

To do that follow this instruction.
  • Click 'Start'
  • Click 'Turn Off Computer'
  • Click 'Restart'
  • As the system starts to reboot tap the 'F8' key
  • A list of Advanced Options should now be visible , highlight 'Safe Mode' using the keyboard arrow buttons and click the 'Enter' button
  • The system should now start in Safe Mode.

STEP 4

Use HijackThis

STEP 5

Delete Files/Folders
  • Open My Computer
  • Double click the C Drive
  • Double click the Folder Program Files
  • Locate the Folder Viewpoint, right click it and select Delete
  • Double click the Folder Common Files
  • Locate the Folder Viewpoint, right click it and select Delete
  • Click the back button until you return to the C Drive
  • Double click the Folder Documents and Settings
  • Double click the Folder All Users
  • Double click the Folder Application Data
  • Locate the Folder Viewpoint, right click it and select Delete.

Next I need you to find and delete a file by using the below method:-

To navigate to the file follow this instruction

  • Click Start, click Search, click All Files and Folders
  • In the Look In box select C Drive
  • Click More Advanced Options
  • Select Search system Folders
  • Search Hidden Files and Folders
  • Search subfolders
  • In the All or part of the File name box type skuns.dat
  • Click Search
  • Delete the File when found.

NOTE - If you receive an error message, right click the folder, choose Properties and check if the Read only attribute box is checked. If it is uncheck it and try the procedure again.

Please now reboot your system before moving onto the next step.

STEP 6

Kaspersky Online Scan

Go here to run an online scannner from Kaspersky.

  • Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  • A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  • Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  • Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  • Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  • Once finished, save the log as "KAV.txt" to the desktop.

STEP 7

Create an Uninstall List/fresh HijackThis Log
  • Open HijackThis
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save List...
  • Save the list to your Desktop
  • Under Other Stuff click the Back button
  • Now click the Scan button
  • Click the Save Log button, save it to your Desktop
  • Close HijackThis.

  • The Uninstall List
  • A fresh HijackThis Log.
