avsystemcare bug and adware problems

Unread postby DO498 » September 4th, 2007, 5:41 pm

Hi, Sorry I messed up my 1st attempt at looking for some help, here goes again.... my Niece's laptop is suffering from avsystemcare which I've seen elsewhere on your forums. It's also got a some adware pop-up problems. I installed Norton 360 after she told me she had these bugs. I've since run M/S Defender (it found nothing); M/S Removal Tool (no infections found; Spybot free (28 problems sorted) and adware SE (also 28 problems found). I'd be really grateful if you'd take a loook at my logfile to see if there's anything I can do to get tis machine running clean and fast!... Thanks very mcuh DO498

Please Download and run BackLight

Download Blacklight Beta from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try_blacklight.html

Hit I accept. It will take you to the download page.

Download Blacklight Beta graphical user interface version):
Download fsbl.exe and save it to the C Drive
Once saved... double click fsbl.exe to Run the program.

Accept the agreement,
Then Click Scan

You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there...
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Hi DO498

Print out or copy these instructions as you will be going into safe mode

Please run Blacklight again. After the scan is complete, click Next.

Highlight these files and choose rename. Reboot when done.

c:\Windows\system32\luclncbco_nav.dat
c:\Windows\system32\luclncbco.dat
c:\Windows\system32\luclncbco.exe
c:\Windows\system32\luclncbco_navps.dat

After reboot in your c:\windows\system32 folder you should see those files with a ren extention:

c:\Windows\system32\luclncbco_nav.dat.ren
c:\Windows\system32\luclncbco.dat.ren
c:\Windows\system32\luclncbco.exe.ren
c:\Windows\system32\luclncbco_navps.dat.ren

Please delete those files.

Please follow these instructions exactly as shown in order to achieve the best results:

1. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.

  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
2. RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download EGDACCESS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode
We Now Need To Boot Into Safemode Now

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc (BOOT SCREEEN).
At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

4. Open My Computer and navigate to the c:\BFU folder.

  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon Image and select EGDACCESS.bfu
  • Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

5. Reboot back to normal mode and post:

  • The content of the file C:\egd.txt that was created by the script.
  • The content of the folder bfubackups in your System(32) folder. This folder was also created by the script.
  • A new HijackThis log

Good morning,

Ran through your instructions, step by step. When I tried to download BFU I got a rather persistant error regardng "the M/s Office component you are trying to run is on CD, please load CD"(which I don't have), it ended up with an error screen. I kept cancelling all this stuff and eventually got BFU loaded. Eevrything worked fine (I guess!) except that there was NOTHING in the system32/bfubackups folder (0 bytes)?! However, here are (a) the egd.txt log and (b) latest hijackthis log. Thanks very much. DO498

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now
    change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
Close all open windows.

Please download ATF Cleaner here by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only.
It does not require any installation and uses minimal system resources. It is set up to clean IE, FireFox and Opera, and detects the browsers you have and grays out the other(s.[/b]

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Open up Hijackthis
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [luclncbco] c:\windows\system32\luclncbco.exe luclncbco

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked

We Now Need To Boot Into Safemode Now

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine,
amount of memory, hard drives installed etc (BOOT SCREEEN).
At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

Delete suspect file
Using Windows Explorer, browse for the following file and delete as instructed
NB Some files may have already been deleted by earlier actions so don't worry if you do not see them:

c:\windows\system32\luclncbco.exe

Run AVG

  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button This must done before saving the report
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
      Image
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
  • Now copy the report back to this topic.

Restart into normal mode and post the AVG Log and a new HJT Log. Also how are things now

Morning DFW, Have now run through your latest set of suggestions. Noted: (a) The suspect .exe was not present on the sys32 directory following the Fix Checked action in Hijackthis. (b) There was "nothing to report" following the AVG safe mode scan. (c) I haven't seen any unwanted pop-ups for a while now, and neither have I seen avsystemcare intrusion. So looks like you've cracked it for me!! :) Machine is pretty slow nonetheless. Here are (i) the AVG scan report and (ii) the latest hijackthis log.....

Hi DO498

Please run this online scan, just to make sure there's something we cannot see.
With regards to the slowness you do have a lot of unnecessary programs starting with windows, I
would short out which one's you need to load at start up, and arrange for the others to be started when needed.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program

Kaspersky Online Scanner .

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence,
click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Allow the ActiveX download if necessary
Once the database has downloaded, click Next.
Click Scan Settings and change the "Scan using the following antivirus database" from standard to extended and then click OK.
Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Hi ya, just when (I) thought we were home & dry the kaspersky jobby has thrown up something :( Dunno what, but hopefully you can spot the prob?! On the slow running front, is that something that you can offer a bit of guidance on (how to check, manage start-up processes), or do you guys not cover that area of activity? And one other aside, I'd welcome Malware Removal's "best practice" to set this machine to minimise potential future calls on your (1st class) service! Back to the prob in hand - here is (a) the kaspersky report and (b) the latest hjt log for your perusal. Thanks v. much, DO

Hi DO498

The items found in the Kaspersky Online Scanner are ok, there are part of BTYahoo.

So we can say you are now clean, we just need to tidy up.

Delete Blacklight and it's logs from you C drive, also delete BFU folder from the C drive as well.

I would keep AFT Cleaner and AVG AS (free after 30 days) for future use,

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

I would be happy to have a look at the startups for you, just post back confirming that you have done the above,
and we get started on them, then we can have a look at your protection.

Good morning, That's great news :) Done the cleanup, created the Retore Point etc. This leaves AFT Cleaner, AVG, Kaspersky and HJT on the machine. I know my niece has never created a Recovery Disk for this machine; would this be a good time to do that? Or after the next round of activity? Cheers, DO

That depends what type of recovery disc you mean, I think I am right in saying that this a HP system, most HP systems come
with a tool "HP Recovery Manager" I sure this is one time process only, have a read below.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/gene ... R1002_UKEN

You have Norton 360 installed, which also has backup software, and will take a Image of your hard drive as it is,
when you run the back up, each time you change something make a new back up, and always keep the last 2 to 3 backups,
you never know when you may need them, once the system is right for you, make the first back up, but read up on it first.

The following are not malware, but fixing them with HijackThis will improve your system's speed. None are necessary at startup,
and may be started manually at any time. This is up to you.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

ehtray.exe (Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance.
Enables the user to access Windows Messenger from within Media Center. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it.
It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time.
It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis.
This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ehTray] C:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehtray.exe

HP Wireless Assistant.exe is the HP Wireless Assistant which is a user application that provides a way to control the enablement of individual wireless
devices (such as Bluetooth or WLAN devices) and that shows the state of the radios for these wireless devices.
If you feel that you want this program starting automatically so that you have it available as needed, then do not disable it.
This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it.
It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time.
It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis.
Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpWirelessAssistant] C:\Program Files\hpq\HP Wireless Assistant\HP Wireless Assistant.exe

HPWuSchd2.exe and HPWuSchd.exe (HP software updates) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance.
This is the HP software updates. If a shortcut doesn't exist, create your own and run it manually This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it.
It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis.
Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe

Broadband troubleshooting software installed by various companies. Not required and you can remove it via Add/Remove programs
This is the item to fix in HijackThis:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BJCFD] C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe

Used in connection with memory dumps - you can disable these by - right clicking on My Computer, selecting Properties and then the Advanced tab.
Click on the Settings button in 'Startup and Recovery'. In the bottom pane - under 'Write debugging information' -
click on the down arrow and then select 'None' - OK your way out
This is the item to fix in HijackThis:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

For this one look into the programs settings, there should be a setting so you can stop it auto loading at start up, you can then start it when needed
This is the item to fix in HijackThis:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Sony Ericsson PC Suite] "C:\Program Files\Sony Ericsson\Mobile2\Application Launcher\Application Launcher.exe" /startoptions

apdproxy.exe (adobe photo downloader) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance.
From Adobe_Photoshop_Album: not to be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems. This program is not required to start automatically as you can
start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.
Many users have reported this process slows their boot time. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis.
Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Photo Downloader] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.0\Apps\apdproxy.exe"

You have reader_sl.exe running at Startup. This is a process associated with the Adobe Reader. It is used to decrease the load time for
the reader when a PDF document is selected. This is a non-essential process. You will still be able to start it manually if you need it.
You can fix this with HijackThis.
Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

You have QuickTime running at Startup. This is QuickTime's system tray icon and not necessary for the program to function properly.
It is considered to be a resource hog. You will still be able to start it manually if you need it. You can fix this with HijackThis, but you will need to change
the setting in QuickTime Player itself to keep it from resetting itself..
This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

There is a small program that will prevent QuickTime from resetting itself.
Please download Engraph-QuickTime-Killer
This is a free utility from EnGraph software. For more information about EnGraph, go to http://www.engraph.com. This application is intended for people that use or consume Sprint Video Mail,
as Sprint uses QuickTime for viewing thier movies. (or anybody that hates QuickTime) Of course, as soon as QuickTime is ran, it adds itself to startup, which is very annoying to me.
This application will remove QuickTime from start up and kill any running QuickTime processes.
This application runs silently at start up and closes itself as soon as it takes care of QuickTime.

You have iTunesHelper.exe running at Startup. iTunesHelper.exe is a process belonging to Itunes MP3 streaming tool by Apple which allows you to play MP3's.
This process speeds up iTunes when it starts, and the program also monitors for connected iPod devices. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually
if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.
It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis.
Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe

If you don't use MSN Messenger, this can be annoying. Available via Start -> Programs. Go to MS Messenger > Tools > Options > Preferences
and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts
This is the item to fix in HijackThis:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background

HP Photosmart Premier Fast Start.lnkImproves the startup time of HP Image Zone. If you disable it, HP Image Zone takes a long time to start up only the first time you run it.
Subsequent startups are much faster than the first time
It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis.
Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - Global Startup: HP Photosmart Premier Fast Start.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqthb08.exe

ipodservice.exe is a process belonging to Apple's iTunes peer-to-peer download tool. The ipodservice.exe process is a utility used to download mp3 files for your iPod.
If you do not use it, or do not have an iPod, you can safely disable this process. This process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance.
It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.
To disable ipodservice, click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Services. Find the IpodService,
Right-click and select Properties. Change the setting in StartUp type: to Disabled or click Start > Run. Type services.msc Find the IpodService,
Right-click and select Properties. Change the setting in StartUp type to Disabled to disable the service.
Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O23 - Service: iPod Service - Apple Computer, Inc. - C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Reboot when you're finished and let me know if it helps.

HI DFW, Thanks for the tidy-up list which I've run through. Since my neice has / uses iTunes and an iPod I've left relevant processes alone till I've spoken to her; ditto the Sony Ericsson app launcher. Hit everything else though! Boot-up is certainly faster, so thanks very much indeed! :) Recovery / backups: I did mean the 1-off HP Recovery disk that you mentioned - this was never actioned. However, since we are some way down the line now, it may well make sense to use Norton to create full backup as you suggest (although I have used the Freecom backup utility that comes with the USB drive I bought for the back-up job). I'll read through the Norton documentation and take a stab at it! Will be a couple of days till I get this strand sorted - so will be back soon to see about protecting the machine going forwards, if that's ok? HJT log follows... and thanks again.
