Ian,
First, you have two antiViruses running at the same time. Running two at once can prevent proper antivirus protection.
Choose either Symantec or AVG, and Uninstall the other.
Viewpoint Manager is not technically a spyware app now, but has had a checkered past. Since I can't be sure of the vintage, I am removing it here. If you wish you can re-install it later.
If any step in the process fails, just note it for your reply, and move to the next step.

Set Your Computer to Show All Files
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. In addition, if you have Windows XP, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start,Settings,Control Panel or Start,Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight any of the following entries that are listed, and choose Remove :

Download and install CCleaner from here.
Don't run CCleaner yet.

Download CWShredder from here : http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe, install it, check for updates. Run it and click Fix.

Download a-squared free from here. Install and update. Do Not Install Background Guard as it may interfere with our fix.
Run it to scan all your drives and fix whatever it finds.

Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:

Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.

Stop Processes Prior to Deletion
Close ALL open windows. Use Ctrl-Alt-Delete together to bring up the task manager.
Under the processes tab, if it is visible, check the box 'Show processes from all users'.
Highlight this and "End Process":

File and Folder Deletion.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to this file. Delete the file, if present:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcnt.exe

If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
Note the name and location of any file you cannot delete.

If there were any files you found but could not delete, then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste the full path of each file to delete, one at a time, into the box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say "No" each time until the last one has been pasted in, whereupon you should answer "Yes".
Let the system reboot.

Run CCleaner. Choose the Windows tab. Check everything EXCEPT be sure the Advanced part of the menu is all Unchecked. Choose Analyze. Let the Analyze portion finish. In heavily junk-laden older machines it could take up to 15 minutes. Then choose Run Cleaner. When cleaning is finished, click Exit.

Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File. When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
When you reply. also tell me the name of your Internet Service Provider. Is it pipex.net ?

Good job so far.
It appears you have uninstalled Symantec Anti-Virus per the plan. We will proceed on that basis. Print this out or save it to a notepad file, since we will not have Internet connection for part of this process.

Disable Microsoft Anti-Spyware
- Open Microsoft AntiSpyware. Click on Tools, Settings.
- In the left pane, Click on Real-time Protection.
- Under Startup Options, Uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
- Under Real-time spyware threat protection, Uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
- After you uncheck these, Click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
- Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
(Reverse this process after your malware removal is complete).
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect before running HJT.

Start Your Computer in Safe Mode.
Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly as the machine boots, until a menu shows up. Choose Safe Mode from the list. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Extra instructions are here if you need them.

Unregister dlls for removal.
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt. Enter the following line, followed by <Enter> .

regsvr32 /u shdocsv.dll

It's OK if it's not found, or 'errors' out.

File and Folder Deletion.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to each of these files. Use find (F3) or Start, Search if the folder is not shown; then Delete each of the files, if present:
shdocsv.dll <== it's probably located in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hookdump.exe
If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
Note the name and location of any file you cannot delete.
If there were any files you found but could not delete, then please follow these additional instructions:
Run Pocket Killbox, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste the full path of each file to delete, one at a time, into the box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say "No" each time until the last one has been pasted in, whereupon you should answer "Yes".
Let the system reboot.

Update Your Windows XP.
Windows XP is unsafe on the internet, and may not provide satisfactory fixes, without Service Pack 1a.
In Internet Explorer, click the Tools Menu header. Then click Windows Updates. Update to Service Pack 1a for now.
You should also get SP2, but only after your machine is clean.
After updating Windows, post a new HijackThis log please, using the Reply button.

Disable and Enable WinXP System Restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files. You will also lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
After it Reboots:
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
This disable/re-enable sequence is not to be done regularly, but only once , directly after removal of a malware infection.

- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use a Firewall - It is very important that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Update all these programs regularly - Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.
