Hello Bikergrandad and welcome to The Malware Removal Forum.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Since I am still in training, I have to let experts check the content of my fixes before I post them so please be patient.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

I will be back as soon as possible with your first instructions!

You are currently running a Beta version of HJT and need to upgrade to the current stable version. Follow the step below to download the current version of HJT, once downloaded, uninstall the Beta version and follow the rest of Step 1.

Step #1 : Download and Run HijackThis
Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Step #2 : Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

Image

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I would like to see a fresh Hijackthis log and the Uninstall list.

Before I can start on a fix, I need the answers to the following questions: Do you use this computer for personal use or is it a computer you use at work? Also, are you on a domain?

I am a retired man using the computer at home. I don't know what is meant by 'on a domain' so I guess I'm not.

Print out these instructions or save them into a notepad on your desktop, because you will not have internet access while in Safe Mode.

P2P Warning!
Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur. Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; while the P2P program you have may be considered safe, I cannot guarantee the safety of every file you download using it. I advise you not to use P2P while I am helping you clean your computer.

Additional information on the safety of Peer to Peer programs themselves is here :
Clean/Infected P2P Programs

I recommend that you remove the following P2P programs:

FrostWire 4.13.1.5 BETA

Step # 1 Download AVG Anti-Spyware

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now
    change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
Close all open windows.
Do not run a scan yet.

Step # 2: Remove Hijackthis Entries

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

    R3 - URLSearchHook: &Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

    O16 - DPF: {AE9DCB17-F804-11D2-A44A-0020182C1446} (IntraLaunch.MainControl) -

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step # 3 Run CCleaner

CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!

  • Select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
  • Then select the items you wish to clean up.

    • In the Windows Tab:

      • Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
      • Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
      • Clean all entries in the System section
      • Clean all entries in the Advanced section
      • Clean any others that you choose
    • In the Applications Tab:

      • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
      • Clean any others that you choose
  • Click the Run Cleaner button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
  • Click exit when done.
  • If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO

Step # 4: Boot into Safe Mode

You can go in Safe Mode by restarting your computer, then continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Step # 5 Run AVG Anti-Spyware

  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
  • Reboot your computer.
  • Now copy the report back to this topic.

Step # 6 Post Logs

In your next post/reply, I'd like to see the following:

    1. A fresh HijackThis Log
    2. AVG Report

Regarding the following file in your Kaspersky report:

D:\Downloads\Nero\Nero-6.6.1.15.exe/Toolbar.exe Infected: not-a-virus:AdTool.Win32.MyWebSearch skipped

I noticed that Nero 6.6.1.15 is not in the Uninstall List you provided to me earlier. If anytime in the future you decide to reinstall Nero, be warned that you will also be installing the infected toolbar as well. If you do decide to reinstall Nero, check to see if there is a possibility to not install the toolbar during the installation process.

Step #1 Download and run SmitFraudFix

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Step # 2 Post Logs

In your next post/reply, I'd like to see the following:

The SmitFraudFix report.

Hi, the reason that you did not see the 'NERO' entry is that since I do not use Nero (I don't like it) I have un-installed it since my last log.

SmitFraudFix v2.219

Download HostsXpert and unzip it to your desktop.

Open HostsXpert that you earlier unzipped on your desktop

  • Click "Make Hosts Writable?" upper right corner (if available)
  • Click "Restore Microsoft's Original Hosts File" and then click OK
  • Close HostsXpert

Note; IF you used any custom Hosts (eg. MVPS Hosts), you will have put them back manually
