I have spysweeper, adaware, spybot & McAfee security, but even though i download new info/definitions, etc. from each as often as it is available, I keep getting the occasional "Mailer Daemon" that makes me think someone is somehow able to send unauthorized emails in my name.
Here is my hijackthis log. I am SUCH a newbie at this--thanks in advance for any help.

If there are advanced security settings that I should set in any of the abovementioned programs (or others!), please let me know how to do that, too.

zingery,
See : http://postmaster.info.aol.com/trouble/mailer.html about the mailer daemon thing.

There are a couple of things we should clean up here. It appears you are using both Charter as your ISP and AOL as a service. Is that correct?
Let me know in your next reply.I don't see any serious malware in your log. It would be sensible to clean up these entries, to avoid unnecessary vulnerabilities.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable SpySweeper
- Open it, Click Options over on the left, then Program options
- Uncheck load at windows startup.
- Over to the left, Click shields and Uncheck all there.
- Uncheck home page shield.
- Uncheck automatically restore default without notification.
(Reverse this process after your malware removal is complete).
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect before running HJT.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing due to other actions)
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - Startup: BounceBack Launcher.lnk = ?
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com (HKLM)

Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Do System Scan and Save a Log File. When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

As soon as you post, we'll add a couple safeguards, re-enable spysweeper, and you should be all set.

askey127--

1st of all--thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it. Yes--I use Charter for my ISP and AOL for my email.

Here is a copy of the mailer daemon thing for my aol address (the one beginning wtih PLH1130--i bolded it)--the thing is, i did not send this email out--but it appears as if it went out from me. is it a fakeout? or did someone hijack my email address?

RE: the items you told me to disable:

I kept the startup for BounceBack Launcher because it is what I use to back up my external hard drive; i hope it was OK to keep it. If you still think I should get rid of it, I will; I was just afraid the program might not work anymore if I did.

I couldn't find all the SpySweeper items you asked me to uncheck--in particular, the "automatically restore default without notification" command. If this causes you to have to help me an extra step, I apologize in advance. thanks again, for all your help.

In any case, here is the log after I performed your requested fixes:

zingery,

I would just delete and ignore the e-mail messages. It appears to me to be a case where someone is using your e-mail address to hide their identity.
Then when they send out spam or a phishing e-mail to a bad address, you get the notice. Happens a lot. They prob got your address from one of your friend's address books in a poorly protected PC. These guys have full time 'bots' looking for e-mail addresses in any PC they can find.
Usually best not to answer anything-just delete. You can read about this stuff at: http://www.cexx.org/

The Bounce Back Launcher appears to have no file to link to, so you can delete the line. Leaving it won't cause damage.
This would not delete the program, which could be run from Start, Programs, Bounce Back

The Browser Hijacks are gone, and you log looks clean. You already have some good protective programs in place
Since you use online music sites, I would recommend that you follow these additional steps:

If You Use Internet Explorer, Change Default Settings .
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to - Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to - Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Install CCleaner - Download and Install CCleaner. Summary page is http://www.ccleaner.com/. Download page is http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner.html. When you start CCleaner, choose the Windows tab. Check everything EXCEPT be sure the Advanced part of the menu is all Unchecked. Choose Analyze. Let the Analyze portion finish. Then choose Run Cleaner. Under options, you can set it to clean every time you boot - a good idea.

spysweeper re-setup

Unread postby zingery » June 28th, 2005, 9:01 am

thanks so much for your on-target suggestions!

i don't want to take up a lot of your time, but will you please walk me through re-setting up my spysweeper? or is there some sort of default setup button that I can just push and it is done?

it is wonderful news to know that I am pretty well protected. you are so great to take the time to help me out.

Zingery,
Something like this should work for you:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Re-enable SpySweeper
Open SpySweeper. If you don't have a desktop icon, go to Start, Programs, click Spysweeper
Click Options over on the left, then Program options
Check load at windows startup.
Over to the left, Click shields and Check all there.
Check home page shield.
Check automatically restore default without notification.
Your changes should take place on next boot.

good luck,
