Hi Moniqueb1972

Welcome to Malware Removal Forums. I will help you with your problem.

The first thing you need to do is the following:

Click HERE to download a self-extractable version of HijackThis.
    Double click on hijackthis.exe to extract hijackthis to folder c:\hijackthis.
  • It will extract it to that folder and open the folder for you.
  • It will also create a shortcut on your desktop to HijackThis.

  • It will scan and the log should open in notepad. Click on "Edit > Select
  • All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the
    log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply. DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

It will be about 36 hours until I can answer you but I have not forgotten you. :)

Hi Monique

You caught me at the last moment before I have to go off line.

I'm Elrond, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please only use this topic for your replies on this problem. Do not start another thread.
The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this problem on this computer.
These things need to be properly researched and a complete fix for many malware problems can take some time and be spread over a number of posts, so please be patient and try to see it through to the end.

Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default) Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

  1. Please set your system to show
    all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.
  2. Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.

    Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

    C:\Windows\system32\msorcl32.exe
    Exit the Task Manager when finished.
  3. Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

  5. You downloaded and installed HijackThis 2.0. It is still in beta and is not yet in production mode.
    Therefore please Download a copy of HJTsetup.exe from one of these locations and save it to your Desktop:
    • Double click HJTsetup.exe to begin installation.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box uncheck the box to the left of "Launch Hijackthis" and then click Finish
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  6. Do a new HijackThis scan and post the log in this thread.
Ok I got as far as looking for my task manager...it seems to have disappeared from the CTR+Alt+DEL menu options...also looked near my clock by right clicking and in there it is greyed out?
Now what.
Sorry for the delay. :oops:
Let us try this:
Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.
Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file and delete it:
C:\Windows\system32\msorcl32.exe
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.
Now can I get you to...
    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.[/quote]
Run a new HijackThis scan and post the log together with the Combofix log.
Hi Monique.
Lets try this:
AVG Anti-Spyware - 1st Part
Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.
If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now
    change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
Close all open windows.
Uninstall programs
* Click on "Start" > "Control Panel".
* If you need to, click on "Switch to classic view"
* Double-click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon.
* Select My Way Search Assistant if you find it.
* Click on the "Add/Remove" button.
* Repeat the last two steps for Viewpoint Media Player
* Once the program has uninstalled, click on the "OK" button.
Restart the computer. When the BIOS has finished loading (before Windows starts loading) start rapidly tapping the "F8". A menu opens. Select "Safe Mode". The computer will start in safe mode.
This can be tricky. If Windows starts up in normal mode, repeat the process. If you have a keyboard with a "F Lock" key click it so that the "F" light above it is on when you start tapping the "F8" key. The startup in safe mode takes some time and while it is doing so it shows you a black screen with the words "Safe Mode"
AVG Anti-Spyware - 2nd Part
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
  • Now copy the report back to this topic.
Restart the computer in normal mode.
Try to download and run Combofix. If it does not work let me know. It is important because it could be that an infection is blocking it.
Run a HijackThis scan and post the loggs from it and from AVG Antispyware and if you succeeded add the Combofix log in this thread.
