Trojans and browser hijack problems

Unread postby minority » June 5th, 2007, 6:20 pm

Hi, my roommate recently was experiencing browser hijacked and didn't know how to deal with it. The problem might be caused by his grandchildren who sometimes come over to use his computer to download some programs such as Buddy2Buddy and other games. I followed your preparation guide to clean up the computer and it seems to help alot. Among the critical objects identified by Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware were trojans, data mining tracking cookies and some browser hijackers, etc. But the Ad-Aware continued to show critical objects when scanned. Also, the computer frequently shutdown to black screen or sometime rebooted itself, besides toolbar changes in the browser.

Previously my roommate had a security suite from Cox but the firewall used was Windows'. When I downloaded and installed a better firewall, in this case ZoneAlarm, the Cox anti-virus program was disabled. There was no way to get the Cox anti-virus program re-started, so I had to download one from the internet, in this case AVG 7.5. Now, everything seens fine except that lucomserver_2_6.exe and others such as Server of Logitech and Webshot constantly asking from ZoneAlarm for permission to connect to the internet. Also, the computer sometime rebooted for no aparent reason.

Here's the hijacthis log:

Hello minority....welcome to Malware Removal!

I believe there is still some malware on the system....but we'll deal with that in a minute.

There is evidence of multiple AV and Firewall programs in the HJT log...this can cause system 'quirks' and instability, so I want to check an uninstall list to see what we can remove via add or remove programs. I see remnants or evidence of Symantec, McAfee, AOL and Cox Security Suite among others. Which AV and FW programs does your roomate want to go forward with? It is important to have only one of each.

It is not at all unusual for ZoneAlarm to ask 'permission' for certain programs to connect to the internet when first installed; it needs to learn what is on the system. If you know what program is asking permission, then you can allow it...if not, then research the program on a search engine to verify.

Let's do this first..let's get an uninstall list, allow you to look at hidden files on the computer and then have a few files analyzed (I believe they are 'bad', I just want to check):

1. Open HijackThis, click Open Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

2. Reveal Hidden Files

  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • SelectTools menu
  • Click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Check Show hidden files and foldersin the Hidden files and folders section.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
  • Click Yes.
  • Click OK.

3. There are some files I'd like to get analyzed:

C:\WINDOWS\B2BUpdate.exe
and
C:\Windows\PictureViewer.exe

Just to be safe, go to this site and have it scan them:
Jotti virus scan

Use the Browse button at Jotti, navigate to the file's location on your hard drive and submit them one at a time.

Let me know the results from each analysis by pasting the results back in a reply to this topic..

Hi Navigator,
Thank you very much for helping me out. My roommate is computer illiterate and he is leaving it up to me and you to decide what's best for his computer.

Previously he had the Cox high speed internet provider's technicians to help him set up the computer and was using the Cox security suite which included antivirus and antispyware programs. There is an icon in the Cox security suite panel for firewall but it was greyed out and inoperative.

When I checked the Windows security center via the Start button, I found the Semantec security center listed there and the firewall that was reported on was Windows firewall. When I downloaded ZoneAlarm and installed it (after stopping Windows firewall), that's when the Cox anti-virus program became inoperative. Since I couldn't find a way to turn back on the Cox anti-virus program, I had to download AVG. When I downloaded and ran HJT program, I realized the computer had another firewall and AV processes running. I am leaving up to you to decide the best option between Cox security and AVG and ZoneAlarm, the rest can be uninstalled and removed.

I couldn't copy and paste Add/Remove Programs in the control panel. As for the Jotti virus scan, I cou87ld only locate the file C:\WINDOWS\B2BUpdate.exe. I counldn't find C:\Windows\PictureViewer.exe thru the Browse button at Jotti nor using the search function via the Start button of the computer.

Anyway, here is the scan result:

Service load: 0% 100%

File: b2bupdate.exe
Status: INFECTED/MALWARE
MD5 3559594c0a697bcd0abe06625a436d6c

Scan taken on 07 Jun 2007 01:11:36 (GMT)
A-Squared Found nothing
AntiVir Found HEUR/Malware
ArcaVir Found nothing
Avast Found nothing
AVG Antivirus Found nothing
BitDefender Found nothing
ClamAV Found nothing
Dr.Web Found nothing
F-Prot Antivirus Found nothing
F-Secure Anti-Virus Found nothing
Fortinet Found nothing
Kaspersky Anti-Virus Found nothing
NOD32 Found nothing
Norman Virus Control Found nothing
Panda Antivirus Found nothing
Rising Antivirus Found nothing
VirusBuster Found nothing
VBA32 Found Trojan-Downloader.Agent.21 (paranoid heuristics) (probable variant)

BTW, my printer driver is not working after my roommate had this problem. This could be the cause of his computer "stop error" problem, I think.

Somehow I missed your instruction on how to get the uninstall list via the "Open Uninstall Manager" in HJT program (that's what could happen without the printer). Previously after the problem, I had removed a number of unused and bad programs such as B2B and games.

Hello minority...

OK. Personally, I would stay with AVG and Zone Alarm...I use both of those programs on some of the computers in the house, they are free, and they work well...also, right now they seem to be operational as opposed to the Cox Security Suite. If at a later date you want to switch back to Cox, you could always re-install it again; you'd probably have to do that now anyway.

Removing security products in general, and Norton/Symantec products in particular, can be a pain...Norton has a removal tool at this site that you can use if the version is listed (it removes all Norton products from 2003-2007 I believe): http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ts ... =&osv_lvl=

Assuming that you want to move forward with AVG and ZA, let's do the following:

1. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Save it to your desktop, we will use it later.

2. Next, download AVG anti-spyware (previously Ewido) from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

3. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [B2B Updater] C:\WINDOWS\B2BUpdate.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PictureViewer] "C:\Windows\PictureViewer.exe"
O16 - DPF: {1663ed61-23eb-11d2-b92f-008048fdd814} (MeadCo ScriptX Advanced) - <http://www.coupondiscounts.com/smsx.cab>
O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - <http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/1452/ftp.coupons.com/r3302/cpbrkpie.cab>

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

4. Reboot into safe mode by restarting your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present). Click start>>control panel>>add/remove programs:

Anti-Virus (Command Software)
Cox High Speed Internet Security Suite
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Viewpoint Media Player

5. Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
  • Click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Windows Explorer
  • Navigate to the listed files, then right-click to select them and click delete:

C:\WINDOWS\B2BUpdate.exe
C:\Windows\PictureViewer.exe Look for it one more time, and let me know if you cannot find it

6. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

7. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG report scan.

8. Post back with the AVG Anti-Spyware scan results and a new HJT log.

Hi Navigator,
Thanks for your detailed instrucution.

I did the step 1 and 2 of the Norton removal program but left out step 3 because I'm not sure why would I re-install Norton product again?

Upon reboot after uninstalling Norton, the computer re-started with several dialog boxes. One said, "Yahoo Messenger Failed". Another said, "Micrsoft Visual C++ Debug Library. Debut Assertion Failed. Program: C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HPBootOptimizer\HPBootOp.exe....."

On step 3 of your instruction on HijackThis scan, a dialog box from AVG anti-virus program appeared after I clicked "Fix Checked" button. It said a malware was detected and some options were given. I chose "clean and quarantine".

On step 4 of your instruction, I couldn't find Anti-Virus (Command Software) in the Add/Remove control panel. Also, I couldn't remove:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

The computer gave a message that said, "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed."

On step 5, I still could not find the file: C:\Windows\PictureViewer.exe . I found C:\WINDOWS\B2BUpdate.exe and it was deleted per your instruction. I also found B2BSetup.exe and B2BSetup_Silent.exe, but left them alone since you had given no instruction for them.

On step 7, I couldn't open AVG anti-spyware program in safe mode. It gave a message that said, "Connection to service failed. Please re-install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5". But, when I returned to normal mode (Note: upon reboot to normal I also received this message: "Security Product could not start on your machine. Technical details of failure have been saved in the startup log files") and clicked on AVG AS, it came up just fine. Therefore, I did a scan in the normal mode. The result came out positive for 4 threats with 6 traces.

However, I couldn't get the report because when I selected the "Report" icon it said "There is no report available" and the "Save report as" button was greyed out. I think the correct step after the positive result was to first press "Save report" and then press the "Apply all action" button.

Anyway, I managed to write the result down by hand and will type them here below together with the HJT log:

That's a problem with all of these security applications being on the machine...they stick their tentacles everywhere, and complete removal is difficult sometimes affecting other programs. Leaving them all in place really isn't a good option either as there are usually system conflicts. Let's keep cleaning/removing. Do you continue to get the same error messages with each reboot of the system?

About the Java removal, my bad..I tried to have you do all the program removals in one step in safe mode..we'll just remove the older Java versions (which are security risks in normal Windows below). The AVG scan didn't find all that much and cleaned what it found...that's good.

I see Norton/Symantec is gone from the log, but we still have McAfee to remove as indicated by some O4 entries in HJT:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OASClnt] C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\antivirus\oasclnt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MPFExe] C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\personal firewall\MPfTray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EmailScan] C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\antivirus\mcvsescn.exe

I am not certain which exact McAfee programs these belong to, so below I will provide a link to McAfee's tech site where you can find and use the appropriate removal tools.

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O16 - DPF: {A7EA8AD2-287F-11D3-B120-006008C39542} (CBSTIEPrint Class) - http://offers.e-centives.com/cif/downlo ... ctxcab.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

2. Remove older Java Versions:
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start >> Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java:
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

3. Here is a link for the McAfee site which can guide you in removing the McAfee programs from your computer:

http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/?siteID=1

4. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

5. Post back with the Kaspersky Scan results, a new HJT log and let me know what problems you are having...

Yes, every time upon reboot. Plus it is followed by a dialog box that said, "Security Application was unable to start. Do you want to repair the installation?". I didn't know what to do, but every time it came up I selected "No".

Other problem was the occasional IE Application Error message when I click to close a browser. Previously. the browser would occasionally freeze with the pointer/hour glass in constant jitters after clicking on a hyperlink during surfing. But, now the problem appears to be gone. Otherwise, everything seems to be just fine now.

Here's my Kaspersky Scan results:

Yes, every time upon reboot. Plus it is followed by a dialog box that said, "Security Application was unable to start. Do you want to repair the installation?". I didn't know what to do, but every time it came up I selected "No".

Which security application does the error message refer to? Does the error message refer to a program or file?

minority wrote:Other problem was the occasional IE Application Error message when I click to close a browser. Previously. the browser would occasionally freeze with the pointer/hour glass in constant jitters after clicking on a hyperlink during surfing. But, now the problem appears to be gone. Otherwise, everything seems to be just fine now.

Great!

It's clean.

I think we have a 'clean' machine experiencing some errors due to incompletely uninstalled security programs, not unexpected considering the large number that were installed to begin with ranging from Symantec/Norton, McAfee, AOL, Command Software and Cox.

There are two more HJT lines that are from security programs other than AVG AV and ZA Firewall:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sscRun] C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\1138476297\ee\services\sscFirewallPlugin\ver1_10_3_1\SSCRun.exe

and

O23 - Service: DvpApi (dvpapi) - Authentium, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Command Software\dvpapi.exe

Does your roommate use AOL for anything on this computer? I would think not since there aren't any AOL programs listed in the HJT uninstall list? At one point, it looks like AOL 9.0 was installed based on the HJT log and the uninstallation of that program has been known to be difficult (i.e. there are problems with the AOL uninstaller):

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,12692 ... ticle.html

and

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2009353,00.asp

I want to know some things:

1. Can you tell me the program or filename associated with the error messages at startup?

2. Was AOL previously uninstalled from the system?

3. Take a look one more time at the program list using add or remove programs utility in control panel, and let me know if there are any programs you see listed that contain/relate to AOL or Command Software.

Also, let me see a HJT startup list:

Run HijackThis:

  • Click the "Misc Tools" [button]
  • Select: "List also minor sections", Select: "List empty sections"
  • Click "Generate Startuplist log" [button]
  • Copy/paste the contents of "Startuplist.txt" and post it in this thread

The message did not specify which program it was refering to except that the technical detail was in the startup log file. I run a search for the "startup log" files and came up with this info:

I am assuming that this was comment and not your instruction for me to fix those entries in the HJT?

As far as I know, he told me he didn't use AOL since he had Cox. Thanks for the links about the bad of AOL. I can't wait to get rid of all traces of AOL.

See above "startup log" file text report.

Navigator wrote:2. Was AOL previously uninstalled from the system?

I don't know, my roommate doesn't know how to uninstall anything unless he had help from his friends. I can't ask him now because he just left for a week long vacation just an hour ago.

Navigator wrote:3. Take a look one more time at the program list using add or remove programs utility in control panel, and let me know if there are any programs you see listed that contain/relate to AOL or Command Software.

I can't find any AOL or Command Software programs in Add/Remove control panel. But, via explore, I found these folders:

C:\Program Files\AOL, which contains Installers and rbm.exe files
C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0a which has no files
C:\Program Files\Common Files, which contains aolback, Command Software, AOL, Authentium Shared files.

Using search for Aol" files I found a list of 1621 files but had no way of copy/paste the info here.

Typo correction:

It should read: 161 files and not 1621.

The message did not specify which program it was refering to except that the technical detail was in the startup log file. I run a search for the "startup log" files and came up with this info:

Error 2007-06-07 22:15:21 C:\Program Files\Cox\Applications\app\Console.exe None -2147221486 Compaq_Owner GEORGE
Error in common.Registry.OpenKey: The requested registry object "SOFTWARE\Authentium\Curtains\v1.5" does not exist.

OK...that tells me that it's part of the Cox software causing the error message, and that Cox used Authentium software in their security suite. It must not have removed completely when we uninstalled it earlier.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sscRun] C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\1138476297\ee\services\sscFirewallPlugin\ver1_10_3_1\SSCRun.exe

and

O23 - Service: DvpApi (dvpapi) - Authentium, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Command Software\dvpapi.exe

I am assuming that this was comment and not your instruction for me to fix those entries in the HJT?

That is correct, for now....

Navigator wrote:Does your roommate use AOL for anything on this computer? I would think not since there aren't any AOL programs listed in the HJT uninstall list? At one point, it looks like AOL 9.0 was installed based on the HJT log and the uninstallation of that program has been known to be difficult (i.e. there are problems with the AOL uninstaller):

As far as I know, he told me he didn't use AOL since he had Cox. Thanks for the links about the bad of AOL. I can't wait to get rid of all traces of AOL.

OK...so moving forward...do you want to wait until your roomate gets back before making further changes..or do you want to keep removing? Either way is fine with me. I'm going to get a second opinion about the best method to remove the straggler entries from the various programs that have been installed/uninstalled for which specific removal tools are not available. I'd like to be able to get rid of the error messages, and that may involve manually going into the system registry.

Let me know if you want to wait until your roomate returns, and I'll look for a second opinion as I stated above.
