Several problems - help obviously needed

Well, I had hoped not to come again so soon, but alas ... glad to see you guys are still up and running though!

So, as I've had several computer problems, I decided to do a little cleanup this afternoon and what do you know, 12 hours later I'm still here. Here's an overview of what I did:

*My computer has been running slowly for a while now, but because my computer is old and was never reinstalled, I figured that it was simply slowly dying.

*Today I began my normal scans for spyware, with Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. They found a couple of things, but nothing to worry about

(except that my IE security settings were tampered with, but Spybot corrected that).

*My AVG free anti-virus has been updated every day, and scans almost every day for a complete scan. It has been saying that my ntoskrnl.exe and user32.dll have been changed, but this happened right after a Windows Update so I gave it no other thought. I never let those get on the net though.

*I use Sygate Personal Firewall but that one has been giving me increasing crap about loading websites so I have to turn it off to make a connection to pages I visit every day. My Windows Firewall is still up and running though and now set to not allow exceptions

*Finally, I scanned with Trend Micro Housecall, to see if anything would turn up.

Two trojans, and one RAT apparently =/
troj_generic
troj_generic.ZA
RAP_generic.
Also various other spyware/grayware/malware I didn't note down - I thought Housecall gave you a little logfile but I was wrong.

It appears that Housecall cleaned those, but I now read that to get rid of RAP_generic you need to turn off system restore and go scan then?

Are they dangerous? I frequently use ebay, paypal or pay on the net, am I in any danger?

*REBOOT

*I installed Firefox 2 after I saw that my update was actually not the latest version of Firefox. This seems to have taken care of the display problem I experienced after my cleanups. Connecting is now better even with Sygate on. It also seems to run faster, but perhaps that is because some extra crap is gone.

*Ran ATF cleaner and got rid of everything but my saved passwords

*I ran a-square, which found several trace problems but nothing highly alarming (except my mirc application but that one seems fine, it was only a warning). I got rid of everything else it checked.

*Housecall ran again, and this time came up with only the two troj_generic entries. All others seemed to have gone. Since I rebooted, I figured it must've come back with System restore, so I turned that off, then asked Housecall to clean it up, which it supposedly did, rebooted and turned system restore back on.

*Another round of ATF cleaner

*Then I came here, got a HijackThis and here's the log:

I'm pretty sure there's a lot of crap in there that shouldn't be there.

(I changed my name to "MyName" in the logfile because last time I didn't and when I do a google search on my name I find my old thread and I'd rather not have anyone find what I have on my computer or something!)

Help?

Hi wordofwyrd. :)

Welcome to Malware Removal Forum.

My name is mayi and I will be helping you.

As I am still an undergraduate, I will need my fixes check before posting to you. Thank you for your patience.

Hello mayi :)

Perhaps it's useful for you to know that I ran another Housecall test, and that it showed nothing this time (system restore turned off did help apparently)

I ran Panda Activescan too, which showed a cookie.txt file that I manually deleted as well as these two:

Adware:adware/igetnet Not disinfected c:\windows\system\rules.dat
Adware:adware/popupdefence Not disinfected Windows Registry

The display problems with websites like gmail and yahoo beta were resolved with repeat cache clearing.

This morning my computer wouldn't recognize my printer, so I reinstalled the driver since that's all it could be, but apparently it just didn't recognize my printer on the port anymore. I had to unhook it from the scanner and hook it directly to the computer for it to work.
It's probably unrelated but I figured I'd let you know :)

Thanks for helping me!

Hi wordofwyrd. :)

Step 1

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware and save it to your desktop.

Step 2

C:\Program Files\AOL\Active Security Monitor\ASMonitor.exe

From Processlibrary, this is a monitoring tool. It sends data back to servers for analysis and may cause popups.

I would highly recommend that you uninstall Active Security Monitor.

To uninstall it, follow the instructions below:

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel. Double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Locate Active Security Monitor and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  3. Repeat Steps 1 to 3 for ewido Anti-malware. A new version is now available.
  4. Once done, close Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel.

Step 3

Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only.

Put a check (tick) next to these lines (if present):

O2 - BHO: BrowserHelper Class - {EBCDDA60-2A68-11D3-8A43-0060083CFB9C} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\nzdd.dll  This is optional. Please read this Castlecops link and this article before deciding whether to fix it.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ASM] "C:\Program Files\AOL\Active Security Monitor\ASMonitor.exe" HIDEMAIN

Click Fix checked. Exit HijackThis.

Step 4

  1. Double click on avgas-setup-7.5.0.50.exe to install AVG Anti-Spyware. Install it in the default location.
  2. Once installed, start AVG Anti-Spyware by going to Start > All Programs > AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 > AVG Anti-Spyware.
  3. In the main screen, you should see Your Computer's Security.
    • Next to Resident Shield, click on Change state. It should now be Inactive.
    • Next to Automatic Updates, click on Change state. It should now be Inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. If your firewall prompts you, tell your firewall to allow it. Should you be unable to update it, download the updates from here. As for your printer problem, I can't help as my knowledge is limited. You can go Tech Support Forum to ask for help. There, the people would have the expertise to help you out. :)

In your next reply, please post:

  1. A new HijackThis log
  2. AVG Antispyware report.txt

Thank you :)

I did all of that

C:/Program Files/AOL. did not exist, not in any account so I couldn't delete it.

When I restarted in normal mode, I noticed that some of my settings had changed and that some pictograms had reappeared on my desktop. My computer also prompted me that it could not load RealDownload, that I had to reinstall it.
I tried to uninstall it via configuration/software, but alas, same prompt.
I also uninstalled RealJukebox and RealPlayer while I was at it.

Here are the logs:

Hi wordofwyrd. :)

When I restarted in normal mode, I noticed that some of my settings had changed and that some pictograms had reappeared on my desktop.

I never see you mention this in your first post. Can you elaborate what settings have changed and what sort of pictograms appeared on your desktop?

A screenshot would be nice.

Well the settings I found out it was because I changed them in safe mode (sorry, I have what they "pregnancy brain" every now and then) -- I had changed my start menu look and didn't realise it would show in normal mode.

The icons that reappeared were those for "my computer" "my documents" and a third one that were previously in my unused pictograms folder. I already put them back in there so a screenshot would be useless I guess ... they stayed gone now.

Sorry for the late response, I went to sleep, timezones :S

That's a small issue. In Safe Mode, Windows only loads the basic services, so things would have looked it changed. A reboot back into Normal Mode will solve it.

The icons that reappeared were those for "my computer" "my documents" and a third one that were previously in my unused pictograms folder. I already put them back in there so a screenshot would be useless I guess ... they stayed gone now.

I don't know what caused them to re-appeared, I will ask around for you.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

  1. Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner button.
  2. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  3. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX from Kaspersky. Click Yes.
  4. When the downloads have finished, click on Next button.
  5. Click on Scan Settings button.
  6. Select extended under Scan using the following antivirus database:
  7. Check (tick) these boxes under Scan options:
    • Scan Archives
    • Scan Mail Bases
  8. Click OK
  9. Click on My Computer under Please select a target to scan:
  10. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected. Click on Save as text button and save it to your desktop.
  11. Copy and paste this log in your next reply.

In your next reply, please post:

  1. A new HijackThis log
  2. Kaspersky online scan log

Thanks for asking around :)

As for the karspersky scanner, something is not working right.

It takes me to the install screen, then I click on "allow the active-x element to be installed" on top of the screen (IE has the warning about it installed and I don't know how to turn it off anymore, I can't find it in "advanced" under options )and instead of staying on the install screen it takes me back to the welcome screen with no arrows or buttons to go anywhere!

Hi wordofwyrd, please try Trend Micro sysclean instead.

  1. Please download Sysclean Package by Trend Micro and save it to your desktop.
  2. Download the latest Virus Pattern Files by Trend Micro and save it to your destkop. It is named lptXXX, where XXX are numbers.
Note: Do not download the Virus Pattern Files if you don't intend to do a scan. Only download it when you want to do a scan, as they are being updated daily.
  3. Create a new folder on your desktop.
    • Right click on your desktop.
    • Click on New > Folder.
    • Type in Trend Micro as the name of the folder.
  4. Select sysclean.com by clicking once. Press Ctrl + X simultaneously.
  5. Open the Trend Micro folder you created earlier. Press Ctrl + V to paste sysclean.com into the folder.
    • Right click and select Extract All.
    • Click on Browse. Navigate to the Trend Micro folder and click OK.
    • Click Next, then Finish.
  6. Close all opened windows except the Trend Micro folder.
  7. Double click on sysclean.com to run it.
  8. Uncheck (untick) Automatically Clean Infected Files box.
  9. Once the scanning is done, click Exit.
  10. A sysclean.log is created in the Trend Micro folder.
  11. Copy and paste that log in your next reply.

In your next reply, please post:

  1. A new HijackThis log
  2. Trend Micro sysclean log

Hi mayi :)

I hope I did it right - I extracted the lpt511.zip file into the Trend Micro folder and then double clicked on sysclean.com to start it.

While scanning, it showed a lot of error <-94>> messages!

Here is the log (as above I replaced my real name with "My Name" to avoid people finding these posts while googling my name)

I haven't said it enough yet, but thank you very much for your patience and help, I'm starting to believe I'll be able to use my computer properly again!

Hi wordofwyrd. :)

Would it be alright to "fix this" this line: O4 - Global Startup: RealDownload.lnk = C:\Program Files\Real\RealDownload\Realdownload.exe to avoid that I get the "can't load RealDownload, reinstall the programme" at every startup?

Yes, provided that you have uninstalled RealDownload.

The two things ActiveScan found that I couldn't clean, are they any danger?

I don't see the Panda ActiveScan results anywhere though. You could post it for checking.

I read Adware.RogueSuspect is a false positive, is it true?

Yup and it has been fixed on various occasions.

Other than the two things that ActiveScan found, are there any more problems with your PC?

It says it can't be found (I presume it has been cleaned out) when I try to uninstall it, so I figure it's not there anymore.

Here they are:

Adware:adware/igetnet Not disinfected c:\windows\system\rules.dat
Adware:adware/popupdefence Not disinfected Windows Registry

The rest were a cookies.txt file that I deleted manually

So I should I unquarantaine it with AVG anti-spyware?

I'll rescan a round with Housecall just to make sure

It will run incredibly slow on certain occasions, and then CPU usage will be at 100%. It's either because I'm both running Firefox and IE with a lot of tabs open, or else it's the "non active system processes" (my computer is in Dutch so excuse me if the translations are a bit botchy) that take up a lot of CPU.

For the rest, I do believe that after owning this computer for over 5 years that perhaps it's time to reinstall windows on it. I can't believe it has been holding up for so long, I must be doing *something* right.

Just one more question: the trojans and RAT that Housecall found, would they perhaps have sent my credit card info or paypal info or something? I'm terribly worried about that actually.

And I'd also like to know which programmes best to use to be as safe as possible, and at what frequency. Finding this troj_generic and RAP_generic has freaked me out terribly!

Please open Notepad and copy and paste the following the code box in. Do not use any other editors.

Code: Select all
regedit /e C:\look.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{d4d505df-d582-400c-91b6-84921012afe3}"
regedit /e C:\look1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\classes\clsid\{d4d505df-d582-400c-91b6-84921012afe3}"
notepad C:\look.txt
notepad C:\look1.txt

Click on File > Save As....

In the File Name box, copy and paste in look.bat
In the Save as type box, select All Files from the drop-down list.

Click Save.

Double click on look.bat. A Command Prompt window will open and close quickly. This is normal. 2 Notepad files will then open.

Please post the contents of these 2 Notepad files.

So I should I unquarantaine it with AVG anti-spyware?

You should update and do another scan. The databases are updated regularly to correct errors.

Are you any particular process(es) that used up quite a lot of resources?

We can't be sure for it. To be on the safe side, change all related info like usernames and passwords from a computer that is clean. Then inform the banks if it is required.

That would be in my closing speech to you once your machine is clean. :)

So I did just that - it opened the DOS window and then it said "cannot find look.txt do you want to make a new file?" I clicked no and there was just an empty notepad document there, and the DOS window stayed open.

When I retried, it prompted me with the same question and this time I pressed "cancel". It then proceeded to say the same about look1.txt, did the same, when I pressed cancel again it just closed itself.

Did I copy and paste wrong?

In safe mode?

Are you any particular process(es) that used up quite a lot of resources?

As far as I know, no. Just AVG when it does a full system scan every night (the antivirus). Rignt now f.e. IE is fluctuating between 40 and 70 (running Housecall) , and the non-active system processes are going from 0 to 30 and back. If that means anything LOL . CPU goes from 30 to 70 in just seconds too.

We can't be sure for it. To be on the safe side, change all related info like usernames and passwords from a computer that is clean. Then inform the banks if it is required.

Would just changing passwords help? The reason I'm asking is because that way I can keep the stored information in the accounts if that makes sense!

That would be in my closing speech to you once your machine is clean. :)

Okay thank you :)
