Computer Running Slow HELP HJTLog

Unread postby MaryAnn » May 30th, 2007, 7:58 pm

Hello, I am new to this board and hope someone can help w/my Dell Dim 4600 WinXP Service Pk 2 System. Computer was running fine untill I had to change over to Embarqmail since they are phasing out the Earthlink altogether. At first my computer was getting slower by the minute and locking up. I finally got some help from Embarq on adjusting ALL the security, anti virus, spyware, etc.. that came along w/the package. Now my computer is at least NOT locking up as before but is running slow. I am almost sure there are things on my HJT Log that can be removed, but I'm not sure which ones. I did notice on R1 it mentions Proxy server=smtpauth.earthlink.net:25. Since I am no longer using Earthlink don't think that should be there, should it? Basically I need someone to tell me how to "clean up" my log and get rid of malware or whatever that is un necessary on my computer. Any and all help will be GREATLY appreciated, as I have posted three times in one week on Dell Comm Forum w/no replys w/solutions. I did get a reply refering me to this forum
Hope you can help cause I am totally at my wits end  w/this slow computer. HJT LOG BELOW.
Regards, MaryAnn

Hi and welcome to the Board

I'm Blade and I am going to try to help you with your problem. Please take a note of five things.

  1. I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine
  3. The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  4. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  5. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Let's start by looking what kind of programs your comp has eaten.

Generate an Uninstall List

* Open HijackThis
* Click on Open Misc Tools Section
* Click on Open Uninstall Manager
* Click on Save list
* Save it to your Desktop
* Post it on your next reply.

Hi MaryAnn

Uninstall following instance thru add/remove programs:
-Internet Explorer Default Page

Navigate to c:\program\files folder and delete if there's folder named as Internet Explorer Default Page.

Start hjt, click do a system scan only, check:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://search.ieplugin.com/q.cgi?q=%s
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O9 - Extra button: SmartShopper - Compare product prices - {3CC3D8FE-F0E0-4dd1-A69A-8C56BCC7BEBF} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocvw.dll
O9 - Extra button: SmartShopper - Compare travel rates - {3CC3D8FE-F0E0-4dd1-A69A-8C56BCC7BEC0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocvw.dll

Close browsers and other windows. Click fix checked.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

  • Start CCleaner
  • On the Windows tab, under Internet Explorer, uncheck Cookies if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the Options icon at the left side of the window, then click on Advanced.
    deselect
Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Click on the
    Cleaner
icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the
Issues feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Since you're using Limewire I recommend to defrag your hard drive(s). P2P programs cause fragmentation and badly fragmented drive slows computer down.

Post fresh hjt log and tell me whether or not instructions above was helpful. :)

New HJT Log

Unread postby MaryAnn » June 1st, 2007, 4:48 pm

Blade,
I did as you instructed w/uninstall, CCleaner and defrag.etc. Below is my new HJT Log. I looked over it and noticed that the (2) 09's Smart Shopper is still there even though I checked them to delete. Let me say that I have been trying to delete these two programs for months working w/Dell Comm Forum. No matter what, these two will not go away. But I don't believe they are the root of my slow computer problem being because it wasn't this slow untill I switched over from Earthlink to Embarq.about a week ago.
I regret to say that my computer doesn't seem to be any faster, pulling up the Internet Explorer Home Page and especially pulling up my email page (which I have to do from the home page) still takes forever. :(
Oh yea, I wanted to tell you, there was an IE folder in my programs but id DID NOT say DEFAULT PAGE so I left it alone. I hope I did the correct thing.

Hi again

If slowness appear only while doing something in net then it seems to be connection problem. When I read your opening post I got an idea that computer was slow on everything. So I'm sorry but can't unfortunately help in that case . :(

However, we can try to remove those two shopper entries using another method.

Download ERUNT
Save it to your desktop. Run and install this program.

In the box that opens ONLY choose
System registry.

Then click OK.

Click save and then go to File > Exit.
This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it. It may take a minute. Just let it go until it's done.

Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad (save it as all files (*.*)) on the Desktop.

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{3CC3D8FE-F0E0-4dd1-A69A-8C56BCC7BEBF}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{3CC3D8FE-F0E0-4dd1-A69A-8C56BCC7BEC0}]

It should look like this -> Image

Doubleclick fix.reg, press Yes and ok.

(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Let me know if those entries appears after that.

Oh yea, I wanted to tell you, there was an IE folder in my programs but id DID NOT say DEFAULT PAGE so I left it alone. I hope I did the correct thing.

You did right. :) That other one was most likely Internet Explorer's folder.

Hello Blade,
Thanks for all your help, I have a question before I continue to try and get rid of those two programs. I started to download ERUNT and got a multiple choice of which things (?) listed was: FREE REGISTERY CLEANER. WHICH REGISTRY CLEANER, CLEAN REG. WARNING, ETC.. Sorry I didn't know "what" to click onto. I kept clicking onto the ERUNT DOWNLOAD and got this screen. I may sound "duuhh" but don't know exactly what to do and I have learned from experience, when I am not sure ... ASK. So I am asking lol Thanks for your patience w/me. Awaiting your reply.

I seem to be doing pretty good now. I can't thank you enough for all your help and patience w/me. I will definately keep Malware Removal in my records for future use.

Actually I didn't try to remove the two items.
I got the response from Embarq and since everything was working fine I just let it be.
