Och aye, Scotsman

Welcome to the Malware Removal forums.

My name is Vino Rosso - if it helps, you can call me Vino for short.

To help me start to understand what's happening with your computer, please do the following:

1 - Install HijackThis
Download a copy of HJTsetup.exe from >here< and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click HJTsetup.exe to begin installation.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box, check the box to the left of "Launch Hijackthis" and then click Finish
  • When HijackThis has started, click on Do a system scan and save a log file
  • When Notepad opens, click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is NOT ticked. If it is then click on it to UNtick it.
  • Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Copy
  • Paste (Ctrl+V) the content with your next reply.
Do not try to fix anything yet! HijackThis shows lots of good files as well as bad.

Please also post any further information about the problems you are having with your computer.

Thanks
Vino

Hi

You don't say why you ran Spyware Doctor and Registry Mechanic but, given the errors you are getting, I would suggest 'undoing' the changes you made with Registry Mechanic and see if the errors stop.

1 - Restore Registry Mechanic Backups
Registry Mechanic automatically creates a backup of the entries it changes in the Windows Registry when the Repair function is executed. These backups allow you to undo any of these changes.
To access Registry Mechanic's Restore backup function, click the Restore button on Registry Mechanic's screen. The Main Status screen is replaced with the Restore registry backup screen.
To restore a registry backup created by Registry Mechanic, complete the following steps:
  1. On the Restore registry backup screen, select the check box next to the appropriate registry backup in the list.
Note: If the number of registry backups becomes difficult to manage, the registry backup list can be sorted by clicking the appropriate field name at the top of the list. Registry backups can be sorted alphanumerically by the following criteria:
    • Name - the name of the registry backup.
    • Creation date - the date and time when the registry backup was created.
    • Size - the size of the registry backup.
    • Clicking multiple times on a field name toggles between forward and reverse sorting by that criterion.
  2. Click the Restore button. Changes implemented in the repair action that created the selected backup are reverted back to their original state, and you are returned to the Main Status screen.
2 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide:
  1. a new HijackThis log
  2. and a description of how your PC is behaving - what problems are you now experiencing?
Good Luck
Vino

Restored Registry Mechanic

Unread postby scotsman » April 24th, 2007, 10:23 am

Hi Vino
I restored the registry mechanic backup and eliminated the generic host process error and the svchost application error
I am still getting the "run a DLL as a app" error. I was getting this error before I ran registry mechanic.

Do you have any idea what this error is referring to?

here is my newest hijackthis log

Hi scotsman

Two things:

1 - Error Message Information
Can you let me know as much information as possible about the error message you're getting. For example:
- when it happens
- does the error message have a title?
- is it a specific program that's giving the error message
- is there any other information?

2 - Event Viewer
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer
Look in the Application and System logs for errors (signified by a red circle with a white cross) that coincide with the time of the problem.
Double-click each of these error symbols to reveal more information.
Post back with the Event ID number(s) and Source information.

Thanks
Vino

Error messages

Unread postby scotsman » April 24th, 2007, 1:21 pm

Hi Vino
the error occurs during startup -once windows has loaded it takes a minute for the erro to come up. The error stats "run a DLL as an app has encountered a problem and needs to close

I ran the event viewer and found the error that occured this mornig when I started my computer it reads: "faulting application rundll32.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180 , faulting module, x10net.dll, version 2.0.0.40, fault address 0x000155b0

again any help would be great.

Hi Scotsman

There are two potential issues that may occur after installing the ATI Multimedia drivers. These errors can occur with any version of the driver and affect the x10net.dll file. Both errors appear as Windows loads and occur for different reasons. They appear as follows:
  1. 'RUNDLL' error loading c:\progra~1\ATI... The specified module could not be found.
    OR
  2. Run DLL as an app has encountered a problem and must close.
    "AppName: rundll32.exe AppVer: 5.1.2600.0 ModName: x10net.dll ModVer: 2.0.0.40 Offset: 000155b0"
Solution(s):
  1. This error is specific to a problem with the x10net.dll path in the registry.
    • Click Start, go to RUN
    • Type REGEDIT, click Ok
    • Highlight My Computer, click Registry, select Export Registry File
    • Name the *.REG file and save on the Desktop
    • If you do make a mistake removing or changing entries then boot to Safe Mode and double click the *.reg file to restore the registry
    • Select Edit, click Find
    • Search the registry for entries containing:
      rundll32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ATI Multimedia\RemCtrl\x10net.dll
      and/or
      rundll32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ATIMUL~1\RemCtrl\x10net.dll
    • Right click on Default and select Modify
    • Change PROGRA~1 and ATIMUL~1 to Program Files and ATI Multimedia respectively.
    • Add quotation marks around the path like this:
      C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\RemCtrl\x10net.dll",EntryPoint
      C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\RemCtrl\x10net.dll",EntryPoint "%1"
    • Click Ok, close Registry Editor and RESTART Windows
NOTE: There are two possible variations of the registry entry; one with and without "%1". Do not add or remove the "%1" if it appears.
  2. If above won't work then try the driver from the following website:

Be aware that there are other versions of the x10net.dll file which are used by other programs. If you do not have an ATI product installed, please do a search in Windows Explorer for x10net.dll and tell me the full path of the file's location.

Scotsman, please re-read the above and be sure you understand what you need to do before proceding.

After completing the above, please post a fresh HJT log and let me know if you had any problems.

Hi Vino
we I followed the direction for regedit I highlighted "my computer" but could not find a heading for "registry" so I stopped. I tried the link you sent to me but got an message that the page could not be found.

I do have an ATI video card here is the exact path "C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\RemCtrl"
