Hi Sue and Welcome to Malware Removal,

C:\Temp\HijackThis.exe
HijackThis is being run from a temporary folder; this means that any backups it creates as a result of fixes made with it will be lost. Please create a new folder like C:\HJT for it and place the program into that new folder.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1DB9EA97-2779-0C84-7615-7BB21F6585C5} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtrcafkv.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2D94DAE4-0A3D-4DB7-5B54-4D9F5B5DA8F2} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtrcafkv.dll (file missing)

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

You followed Mr. Charlie’s advice – I am guessing you mean the information from above? How far did you go?

About the following files:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MsInfo

oinfoil.ocx_1033
oinfop1.exe_1033
oinfop11.mod_1033
oinfosll.dll_1033

C:\SWSetup\Preload\Off03Trilus\M3561414.Cab

oinfoil.ocx
oinfop1.exe
oinfop11.mod
oinfosll.dll

I would suggest is to submit each of the files to Jotti and see what the results are.
Please show all files for your system.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Submit File to Jotti
Please click on Jotti
Use the "Browse" button and locate the following file on your computer:
oinfoil.ocx_1033
Click the "Submit" button.
Please copy and post (reply) with the results

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

Please also check the properties of those files (right-click and select properties from the popupmenu). Look if you can find some company information, etc.

Repeat the above with each of the files.
==============
Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

**Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

I would like to see a new hijackthis log and the results from Kapersky. Also let me know what you find out from Jotti.

I created a folder for HiJack

You followed Mr. Charlie’s advice – I am guessing you mean the information from
above? How far did you go?

The version of Mr. Charlie's advice was slightly different. I added the following lines to the Host File:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (for XP)

127.0.0.1 cu.outerinfo.com
127.0.0.1 update.outerinfo.com
127.0.0.1 update2.outerinfo.com

Other than that the above it was the same instructions and I went to the end.

About the following files:
Quote:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MsInfo

oinfo11.ocx Microsoft Corporation
oinfop11.exe Office Data Provider for WBEM
oinfop11.mof Microsoft Corporation
oinfos11.dll Microsoft Corporation

C:\SWSetup\Preload\Off03Trilus\M3561414.Cab

oinfo11.ocx_1033 Microsoft Corporation
oinfop11.exe_1033 Microsoft Corporation
oinfop11.mof_1033 Opens with unknown application
oinfos11.dll_1033 Microsoft Corporation

I checked the properties of the files and the info is off to the side.

Here is the scan info:

Hi Sue,

On the basis that you followed Mr. Charlies instructions, and Kapersky scan is clean along with your hijackthis log, I think everything is fine.

Those files were not infected and appeared to be Microsoft files.

Please follow the recommendations below and also be sure to update your Java.

======
DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtop ... 6ea0b5e8ee
Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  2. Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  3. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  4. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  5. Updating Java
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

  6. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  7. More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.

Susan,
Thanks for your help. The instructions were specific and easy to follow.
I'm relieved that things look okay.

After my original post I ran additional scans and found Trojan.small and Softoware also present. Good riddance to all of them. I followed your last instructions and now all I need to do it reinstall McAfee (it had quit working).

By the way, this is what happens when you have a teenager in the file room with a air card. From now on, he gets the laptop but no internet connection.

Thanks again.

Were you able to get McAfee running again? I had asked you to shut down anti-virus applications while running Kapersky.

Did you have to reinstall McAfee?

When I first identified that there was a problem I removed McAfee since it wasn't working anyway so Kaspersky should have not had any interference from McAfee. I haven't reloaded McAfee yet because I need to get it from the office.

Thanks.

Please do not delay but get that McAfee installed before roaming the web - I do not want you to become infected again!
