Help - infected with media codec and svchost

Unread postby matthew6476 » February 26th, 2007, 6:49 pm

Hi, I hope you can help me, I am at my wits end with my PC. I downloaded and installed a media player to allow me to view video files, and McAfee found and deleted a trojan, but since then, on startup, the PC has tried to download Windows updates, and the little yellow shield comes on, but does not download anything. Then the CPU shoots up to 100%, mainly being svchost.exe, or sometimes explorer.exe, but I have used McAfee to block explorer's access to the net, so that seems okay not.

Ad-Aware picked up a Zlob downloader, which was quarantined (report below), Spybot found a Warez P2P, which was also removed, and SuperAntiSpyware found a mediacodec, which was also removed (log shown below)

I have also got a Hijack this log. Please could you help me????

Hi matthew6476 and welcome to the Forums :)

You're infected.

You have two (2) antiviruses installed and running, AVG Antivirus and McAfee. Running more that one antivirus at the same time may cause all kinds of problems and is NOT recommended. You should leave only one (1) antivirus running. You should uninstall/disable either AVG Antivirus or McAfee. When you have decided, you can uninstall your choice through Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs..

Please notice that if your McAfee includes a firewall and you decide to remove it, you must install a new firewall too. In that case these are good and free firewalls:Sunbelt-Kerio, ZoneAlarm, Sygate, Outpost

====

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

NOTE: Do not run any other options from SmitfraudFix until I tell you to do so!

hi the PC is good to go now - the CPU is not eaten up by things on startup, but I it did shoot up when I tried to connect to microsoft to check for updates, and I had to end the process on Task Manager. Is this normal - will updates be affected in the future - should I just wait for them to happen?

Thanks for all your help, what a guy!!!

Hi, I have tried the link, but the CPU use shoots up to 100% and nothing gets downloaded. In the end I had to go into task manager to end SVC host. Is it a general problem with Microsoft, or is the problem on the PC?

Hi :)

Is this a new problem - when did you notice it?
Did you install the MVPS Hosts file?

Hi, this happened at the same time as the initial problem. If I try to manually connect to Microsoft, then the svchost.exe starts to eat up memory, and I end up having to end it via Task Manager. I have downloaded and installed the host file.

The same problem happened when I opened media player, and the wuauclt.exe and svchost.exe shot up CPU use to 100%. Do I have a problem with autoupdate do you think?

Hi again :)

The probelm is propably related to the installation of the hosts file. Did you see the editor's note?

This should be easily resolved:

Editors Note: in most cases a large HOSTS file (over 135 kb) tends to slow down the machine. This only occurs in W2000/XP/Vista. Windows 98 and ME are not affected.

To resolve this issue (manually) open the "Services Editor"

* Start | Run (type) "services.msc" (no quotes)
* Scroll down to "DNS Client", Right-click and select: Properties
* Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type"
* Select: Manual, or Disabled (recommended) click Apply/Ok and restart.

Let me know if it helped :)

Hi, I did as you said, and went back to microsoft site to get updates, but the same thing happened. The yellow shield came on, and svchost.exe went up to 100% cpu usage again, and I to end it via task mgr again.

I am not sure what is going on with it all now!

Hi again :)

After a little research, this seems to be a bug from Microsoft.
When you run Microsoft Windows Update to scan for updates or to apply updates to any applications that use Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) 3.1 together with Windows Update, CPU utilization may reach 100 percent for prolonged periods.

There is a fix available.

Please download & install the following hotfix -> Update for Windows XP (KB927891)

Restart the computer and try Windows Updates again. Let me know how it went :)

Hi, I tried the fix you said but it made no difference, but I called microsoft, who gave me some more fixes and then i installed the updates the system had been trying to get, so all seems okay now. I will restart the PC and see if the same problem occurs, and I will let you know!
