Unfortunately, it's one step forward but two steps backwards. The files previously quarantined by AVG-AntiSpyware have re-appeared.

1 - Silent Runners
Please download Silent Runners from >here< and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click the Silent Runners icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not finished yet! Let it run - it won't appear to be doing anything.
  • Wait until you see the prompt All Done! then double-click the new text file on the desktop and Notepad will open.
  • In Notepad, click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is NOT ticked. If it is then click on it to UNtick it.
  • Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Copy
  • Paste (Ctrl+V) the content with your next reply.
NOTE If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

it says i require windows management instrumentation to run it...and it tell me to start that service so i opened up the services but the closest thing i could find to that is the WMI performnace adapter but when i try to start it it says it fails to start in a timely fashion....

OK, let's try via HijackThis

HijackThis Startup List
Start HijackThis and click on Open the Misc Tools section
  • List also minor sections (full)
  • List empty sections (complete)
Click the Generate StartupList log button
Click Yes to the warning message
Notepad will open
In Notepad, click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is NOT ticked. If it is then click on it to UNtick it.
Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Copy
Paste (Ctrl+V) the StartupList log in your next reply

OK, let's try cleaning things out again...

Please print these instructions as you will not have access to the internet during this fix.

1 - Clean Out Temporary Files
Start ATF Cleaner by Atribune ©
  • Make sure that all browser windows are closed
  • Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
  • Under Main, choose Select All
  • UNtick Prefetch
  • Click Empty Selected
  • If you use Firefox browser,
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • If you use Opera browser,
    • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
2 - Scan With AVG Anti-Spyware
Start AVG Anti-Spyware and do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click the Scanner icon at the top and then click the Settings Tab.
  • Under How to act? click Recommended actions and select Quarantine from the menu.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

3 - Boot to Safe Mode and Scan
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
Reboot in Normal Mode.

4 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide:
  1. the AVG Anti-Spyware Scan report
  2. a new HijackThis log
Remember, if you can, it's worth printing these instructions out before you start.

Good Luck

It has been a week since I've heard from you. If I'm to help you, it's important that you take timely action otherwise any infection will simply return in between your posts.

Are you still requiring help?

Hi Andre

Good choice :thumbleft:

Sometimes the best solution is to format and reinstall Windows. You will have the reassurance that the system is clean after you do.

If you decide to go this route, start the format, and make sure you are not connected to the Internet (unplug dial-up, DSL, cable, wireless ) when you install the Operating System. After the OS is on board, install an Antivirus program and a Firewall (if you have a CD for them), reboot, then connect to the Internet, and install Service Pack 2.

If you do not have a CD, and need to download an AntiVirus program and a Firewall from the Internet, let that be the first step so that the system is protected right after the Operating System is installed.

There are free AntiVirus programs you can download:Some free Firewall choices are: Then, make sure that the AntiVirus program installed in your system is always kept up to date!

Last, install whatever other programs you wish after the computer has protection.

If data was backed up prior to the format, before placing that data back into a clean hard drive, have it scanned with AntiVirus programs. Use more than one program, since AntiVirus scanners use databases that are not identical, and one may find malware that another does not. If the data is reported as clean after running a few virus scans (I would use at least three), it should be safe to place it in the clean hard drive.

Some of the best suggestions and programs to remain malware free are contained in the following:
Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place' http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html
Take a look at what the article has to offer and select the programs that suit your needs.

Also, the following is an excellent program that you may want to run on a regular basis:

AdAware SE: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

Every so often, also perform an online virus scan. AntiVirus scanners use databases which are not identical, and one may find malware that another does not.

Some online scanners: If you have any questions or comments, do not hesitate to post back.

If you have no questions, please post back to let us know that we can archive the thread.
