Good Evening spammed!

Here are your next set of instructions

STEP 1

Windows Update

I would like you to visit the Microsoft Windows Update site via this link http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
When it has finished checking for updates please allow it to install all critical updates

STEP 2

Ad-Awares Ad-Watch

You have Ad-aware's Ad-Watch running on your machine. Prior to doing the fix below with HijackThis, it needs to be turned off.

Please do the following.
  • Open Ad-aware SE.
  • Go to Ad-Watch User Interface.
  • Go to Tools and Preferences.
  • At the bottom of the screen you can see two checkable items called Active and Automatic.
  • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
  • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
  • Uncheck those boxes.

Remember when we have completed cleaning your machine to turn this back on.

STEP 3

Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available.
  • Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link
  • On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
  • Click the Continue button
  • Click Run, and click Run again
  • Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

When the installation is complete go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.

STEP 4

Viewpoint

I see Viewpoint installed..

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article.

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present:
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player

STEP 5

Update Java

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of perceived vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 .

To check your version to see if it is the latest version, Please go to this link to verify your version to get the updates needed:

You'll need to use IE and allow ActiveX for this update. Follow the instructions on that page to verify Your Java software.

Or you can get the manual download here:

Once you have installed the latest update, please go to Add/Remove Programs and remove all older instances of Java listed there.

STEP 6

File Sharing - P2P

You are running several P2P filesharing programmes.

  • Many of these programmes come with unwanted components bundled with them.
  • If you wish to find out whether the ones you're using do click here.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P programme, it is only the programme that is safe.
You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

As you do not know the source integrity of the files you are downloading you are basically playing Russian Roulette with your system !

My recommendation is you uninstall these programs.

PLEASE NOTE

If you do not wish to remove these programs then that is your choice however, I must insist that you do not use any of your P2P/File Sharing programs until I have given you the all clear.

STEP 7

Uninstall List

After looking through your uninstall list I came across these 2 entries

ccCommon
AV

This entry ccCommon can indicate the fact that there are 2 Anti Virus programs on your system.
This entry AV may confirm this.

If the later is an Anti Virus program then running 2 such programs at the same time can cause instability, freeze ups and all manner of other problems.
If the AV refers to a program that you know to be an Anti Virus program then either it or Norton Anti Virus need to be uninstalled.

Because your Norton Anti Virus program has many other features including a Firewall I suggest it is much better to keep it.

My advice therefore is to go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the program AV only if it is another Anti Virus program.

If it is not an Anti Virus program then have you installed it and do you know what the program is ?
Please inform me in your next reply.

STEP 8

Panda Active Scan

Please go HERE to run PandaActiveScan...

  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)

  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to your desktop.

STEP 9

Report Back
  • Please now post back the information I asked you regarding the AV entry in your uninstall list (STEP 7)
  • The Panda Active Scan Report
  • A fresh HijackThis log.

I will review the new information and reply as soon as possible.

bravo

Unread postby spammed! » February 14th, 2007, 10:38 pm

well it looks like i might be in the clear since only a handful of cookies showed up on the scan (which i manually deleted anyway)...
Also i thought about that AV item in the uninstall list and looked for it and found none to that exact name so i just uninstalled a-squared and AVG programs leaving norton antivirus to deal. and heres the lists:

Good Afternoon spammed!

OK your log file is looking much better now but let's not crack open the champagne just yet ! :D

Here's what I need you to do next:-

STEP 1

Download and run Silent Runners

Download Silent Runners.zip and extract it to a new folder on your Desktop.

  • Run the Silent Runners.vbs file.
  • You will receive a prompt: "Do you want to skip supplementary searches?" - click "NO."
  • If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow Silent Runners.vbs to run.
  • This script is not malicious so please allow it.
  • A text file will appear in the folder - it's not done, let it run. (It won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once the "All Done!" prompt flashes up, open the text file and save it to SR's folder on you Desktop.

STEP 2

LQFix - Download and run

Download LQfix.exe and place it on your desktop.

  • Doubleclick LQfix.exe and click install.
  • Leave the default settings. If you change them, the fix will fail.
  • Make sure 'Launch LQfix' is checked. After clicking finish in the install, the fix will start.
  • Follow the prompts on the screen.
  • Your system will reboot afterwards.
  • Please be patient after reboot, because there is a script running in the background.

STEP 3

Download and run CCleaner

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.

  • Double click on the ccsetup.exe file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location.
  • Under Install Options, choose all the default settings except I would recommend that you unclick/untick install the Yahoo! Toolbar, unless you want it. You can also Uncheck the 'Automatically check for updates' box.
  • Click Install then finish to complete installation.

Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner

  • Open CCleaner.
  • In the Left Pane, click Tools
  • Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
  • In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
  • Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
  • You can leave the filename as install.txt
  • Click Save

STEP 4

Report Back
  • Please post back the SilentRunners Log
  • The CCleaner Log
  • A fresh HijackThis Log

Also very important, can you tell me if you are experiencing any of the original problems ?
How is your system running now ?

I will review all the information and reply as soon as possible.

Good Evening spammed!

Here's what I need you to do:-

STEP 1

Download Programs

Download and use ERUNT

  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

STEP 2

Download ETRemover
  • Please go to this link ETRemover to download the latest version of ETRemover.
  • Unzip the files to a new folder on your Desktop.

Do not run this tool yet.

STEP 3

Boot into Safe Mode/show hidden files and folders

Show hidden files and folders

To do that follow this instruction.
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.

Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Now please boot your system into Safe Mode

To do that follow this instruction.
  • Click 'Start'
  • Click 'Turn Off Computer'
  • Click 'Restart'
  • As the system starts to reboot tap the 'F8' key
  • A list of Advanced Options should now be visible , highlight 'Safe Mode' using the keyboard arrow buttons and click the 'Enter' button
  • The system should now start in Safe Mode.

STEP 4

LQFix

In an earlier post I asked you to download LQFix onto your Desktop

Now we are in Safe Mode I would like you to run the program again.

Please do so like this:-

  • Doubleclick LQfix.exe and click install.
  • Leave the default settings. If you change them, the fix will fail.
  • Make sure 'Launch LQfix' is checked. After clicking finish in the install, the fix will start.
  • Follow the prompts on the screen.
  • Your system will reboot afterwards.
  • Please be patient after reboot, because there is a script running in the background.

STEP 5

Run ETRemover
  • Doubleclick on the ETRemover exe file to run the removal utility.
  • Click the Kill Elite Toolbar button.

Note: You may be asked permission to remove some temp files stored in Windows. This is normal so allow them to be removed, otherwise the malware may return.

STEP 6

Use HijackThis
  • Open HijackThis
  • Click the button Do a system scan only
  • Place a tick or check mark next to the following entries highlighted in red

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: 58.dll

  • Click the Fix Checked button
  • Close HijackThis.

STEP 7

Delete a File

To navigate to the file follow this instruction

  • Click Start, click Search, click All Files and Folders
  • In the Look In box select C Drive
  • Click More Advanced Options
  • Select Search system Folders
    Search Hidden Files and Folders
    Search subfolders
  • In the All or part of the File name box type 58.dll
  • Click Search
  • Delete the Folder/File when found.

NOTE - If you receive an error message, right click the folder, choose Properties and check if the Read only attribute box is checked. If it is uncheck it and try the procedure again.

Please now reboot your system into normal mode

STEP 8

Delete a Registry Key

To do that follow this instruction.

Copy/paste the following text into a new Notepad document. (You must use Notepad, NOT Wordpad).
Make sure that you have NO blank lines at the beginning of the document before REGEDIT4, and ONE blank line at the end of the document as shown in the quoted text:

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[-HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ Antivirus = av.exe]

Save it to your desktop as Fixme.reg. Save it as follows...
File Type: "All Files" (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: Fixme.reg

Locate Fixme.reg on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the merged successfully prompt.

Please now reboot your system before moving onto the next step.

STEP 9

Uninstall List/HijackThis Log
  • Open HijackThis
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save List...
  • Save the list to your Desktop
  • Under Other Stuff click the Back button
  • Now click the Scan button
  • Click the Save Log button, save it to your Desktop
  • Close HijackThis.

STEP 10

Report Back
  • I now need from you The fresh HijackThis Log
  • The Uninstall List

I will review the new information and advise of any further necessary steps as soon as possible.

back to ya

Unread postby spammed! » February 21st, 2007, 6:17 pm

hey alright im sorry if this only complicates the scenario but the last time you had me restart in safemode (prior instruction set) i was able to do so uninterrupted, however this time around it freezes just b4 the windows in starting up page (still in DOS). I can still do it in safemode but only if i start in safemode with networking (???) but anyway i couldnt find 58.dll again! even tho the values for HJT came up and were fixed (more ?? marks). Lastly when i tried to use the ETRemover it wouldnt except for once in regular windows mode right after an update and it found like 8 things and fixed them i guess. so i restarted in safemode again with networking and tried again only to find that windows had to shut it down after finding one entry (midsearch) while searching for infections in autorun programs, and to my understanding the elite toolbar autostarts at boot and after executing itself it goes thru and deletes its exe file so maybe its connected somehow but you know lots more than me...but i have the logs for you:

i searched thru regedit for 58.dll and found 2 entries.....considering manually deleting these and then renaming their containing folders on next boot then researching for the dll, if gone then i will return the folder names to their originals....is this risky to windows??

Good Evening spammed!

There appears to be a problem with deleting or removing a few items.
This could be attributed to a program that you have installed called Ad-Aware SE Professional .
This is an excellent program but it is working too well, it is preventing us from deleting or removing some of the items that we need to.
The only way to stop this happening is to uninstall Ad-Aware SE Professional until we have cleaned your system and then re-install it when I give you the all clear.

Next I would like you to disconnect from any network.

Please do this now then reboot your system

You mentioned in your last reply that you considered deleting some registry values or keys to help solve a problem.

Please Do not attempt to delete or alter any registry keys.

Should you follow my instructions by temporarily uninstalling Ad-Aware SE Professional then we should be able to successfuly delete or remove the rest of the offending items unchallenged.

OK, by now you should have uninstalled the program that I requested and rebooted your system.

Now I need you to refer back to my last post and follow all the steps again.
When you have done that post back the requested information for me to review.

sorry for the delay...i did as you said and tried all of the steps again without Lavasoft's Ad-aware in safemode and i got all of the same results and still unable to locate the notorious 58.dll which i know is there but probably stored in memory because when i delete the values in the registry or in HJT, they are immediately returned. Im still unable to run the elite toolbar utility either.

Hi spammed!

Nice to have you back :)

It has been a little while since you last posted so to get us back up to speed the first thing I require is a fresh HijackThis Log

I will look at the new log and provide the next instructions as soon as possible.
