I think I have W32.SpyBot.S Worm

Unread postby Mossydog » February 1st, 2007, 1:22 pm

Hello, I am helping a friend with computer problems. I think the computer has W32.SpyBot.S Worm and a bunch of other problems also.
When booting up in normal startup, a Data Execution Prevention box continually pops up and I can't do anything. Something is also turning off all of the computer services.

Did manage to get a HJT log in normal startup though. Please take a look.

Thanks, Mossydog

Hello mossydog...welcome to Malware Removal!

I do not see anything malicious in the HJT log....but what I do is at least three anti-virus programs running (AOL, AVG and McAfee), and at least two software firewalls running (McAfee and ZoneAlarm)....it's a wonder this computer even boots up!

Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two (not to mention three) anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one Anti-Virus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Here is a link that discusses the DEP errors on a system with conflicting AV software:

http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:0Nt ... =clnk&cd=1

About DEP:
DEP does not help prevent harmful programs from being installed on your computer. Instead, it monitors your programs to determine if they use system memory safely. To do this, DEP software works alone or with compatible microprocessors to mark some memory locations as "non-executable". If a program tries to run code—malicious or not—from a protected location, DEP closes the program and notifies you.
With three AV programs running, I wouldn't be surprised if they were causing the DEP errors.

The first thing I would do is choose ONE AV program and ONE software firewall to go forward with (your choice) and remove the others...then see if the problem is resolved.

If not, we can start doing more in depth malware scans etc...

HI again,

It wasn't until I ran the HJT log that I found the other two anti-virus programs. The computer wouldn't let me into the McAfee (AOL) or Norton programs to do any. I added to AVG to do a scan.
I think the person that owns this computer will load anything that pops up on the screen, thinking that it is something that she needs.

I have removed several programs. The computer is now running fairy well. Here is the latest HJT log.

Thanks for taking a look.

Hi Navigator,

Could you close this thread??

Here is what I posted at Tom Coyote. Thanks for your help.

Angie

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the confusion. Didn't realize that Tomcoyote and Malware Removal were keeping tabs on each other. I only wanted to compare info. Didn't mean to hog the resources. Alway appreciate the help.
I have helped co-workers, friends and relatives clean up their computers for the past 3 or 4 years. Just haven't had the guts to join the MRU and go it alone.
I used to comunicate with ChrisRLG or Texruss. Started dealing with computer problems when ChrisRLG was with Dell Forums and followed him to Tomcoyote.

The only things that I removed from this computer were the extra anti-virus programs, AOL, Logitech Desktop Manager, Yahoo toolbar, Google toolbar, AOL toolbar, and a couple of photo programs that weren't being used. I used the Add/Delete programs in Control Panel or the actual uninstall that was available for the program. I have NOT checked and removed anything using HiJack This. Was waiting to hear for you guys that know what you are doing.

Again I am sorry for the confusion. Lesson learned.

Thanks, Angie
